Every town and city in America writes its own zoning laws, which dictate what you can and can’t put in any one area of the town. And there’s good reason for this! You don’t want to put a big huge factory that makes lots of noise 24/7 in the middle of a place where people live, for example. Pretty much every place has zoning. Zoning is not inherently the problem.

The problem is the type of zoning the US uses. Most of the US has extremely restrictive zoning. For example, something like 90% of all post-WWII urban and suburban housing in the US is in neighborhoods zoned R-1 (Residential 1) or the equivalent. And R-1 is crazy restrictive.

You can put exactly four things in an R-1 zone. You can put single-family houses, schools, parks, and places of worship.

You can’t put: little neighborhood shops, grocery stores, hair salons, multi-family dwellings, or anything else. You are an accountant who wants to set up shop in your garage because that’s cheaper than renting office space? Too bad for you! No businesses are allowed in an R-1 zone, even if you’re running them out of your home, and if you try and your city finds out, you could be in a lot of trouble.

Oh, but wait, there’s more! R-1 zoning also has laws about density! Each home has to have a good-sized lot. Usually there’s a requirement for how much front yard there has to be (20 feet from the house to the curb is a fairly standard number) as well as a requirement that the house can only take up a certain percentage of the lot (often around 15-20% of the land). This means that the houses are fairly far apart.

You can’t build apartments, condos, row houses, or any form of high density housing there, because it is illegal. Everyone is very spread out. When you combine that with “nothing but houses, schools, parks, and churches,” and 90% of housing zoned R-1, you can have vast expanses of suburbs where the nearest thing other than houses and parks is miles away. It would take hours to walk anywhere from your house, so nobody does it. So the cities don’t build sidewalks. Which also cuts down on the people walking.

This is what is known as “urban sprawl.” This is why Americans drive so much. This is also why American cities are so congested: everyone has to drive everywhere, and you have to drive relatively long distances. Even just going to the store for a gallon of milk can be a ten mile drive. And if every single person has to drive for every single trivial errand, well, for any decently-sized city it simply isn’t possible to build enough streets and highways to accommodate all the traffic.

This is also why housing in America is so expensive. People who would be just fine with an apartment are often forced to rent a suburban home because there aren’t enough apartments. And R-1 houses are designed for the upper middle class. If you can’t afford that ... sucks to be you. It drives the prices up for everyone.

And it’s also why so many cities in the US have infrastructure problems, financial problems, and regularly teeter on the verge of bankruptcy! Infrastructure is expensive, and a lot of it (roads, water and sewer pipes, etc) has expenses based on how far it has to go. It costs the same amount to repave a block of street whether there are eight households along that street or twenty households along that street. The taxes on houses in R-1 zones would have to be absurdly high to pay for the cost of maintaining the infrastructure. To the best of my knowledge, no city in America breaks even on R-1 suburbs. They spend more maintaining the infrastructure than they take in in taxes.

So for people who aren’t American and are sitting here wondering what the fuck, here’s why it stays that way:

1) Lack of imagination. For eighty years, this has been the way most American homes are. This is normal. People assume that it is inevitable and the way things just naturally should be.

2) Privileged assholes. Upper-middle-class white people are the ones who are by far the most likely to go to the city council and city zoning meetings where such things are decided, and they overwhelmingly oppose changes to the R-1 zoning code. Why? Because they are afraid it would damage their property values. They are sure that if the zoning in their neighborhood changes, someone will come in and build a huge concrete block of an apartment complex right across the street. And if there were low-income housing built anywhere in the city, the city would attract poor people! And addicts! And criminals! And people of color! And if there were too much low-income housing, why, even if it wasn’t in their neighborhood, it would bring housing prices down everywhere in town, which would mean their house would be worth less than it is now, and their investment would be damaged! (because of course the most important thing about housing is “does everyone have a safe place to live” but “how much money can I make by buying and selling houses.”) ... and then they wonder why their kids can’t afford to buy a home like they could at that age ...

While many of us associate conspiracy thinking with right-wing types, the fact is that no one is immune to conspiracy thinking, and people on the left indulge in it quite often.

I’ve spoken about how QAnon types believe that everything they see celebrities and politicians do is all a staged drama, which they call “the show.” Supposedly, all of the “real” stuff is playing out “behind the scenes.”

Left-leaning people are actually prone to a very similar belief - anytime a public figure says or does something incredibly controversial or ostensibly disastrous, you’ll find a number of people claiming that it must have been a carefully-calculated move to gain more publicity. This isn’t to say that publicity stunts don’t exist, but the kind of people I’m talking about basically believe it’s impossible that a public figure is genuinely just a dipshit asshole sometimes. They make the same fundamental error as right wingers by assuming that these people are playing 5D chess. You know how right wingers tend to read everything that doesn’t go exactly their way as the machinations of an evil conspiracy? Leftists often do basically the exact same thing, interpreting everything that inconveniences or annoys them is part of a deliberate ploy to keep them oppressed. There are, of course, many laws and systems designed to do exactly that. But sometimes, laws and systems are just designed badly, and people suffer as a result.

Many left-leaning people buy into extremely similar conspiracy theories about Christianity as both Evangelical and New Age conspiracy theorists. Like many Evangelicals, they often believe that the Catholic Church is literally nothing whatsoever more than a tool to deceive and control the masses. (Like yes, the Catholic Church has always been a political force, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t also generally sincere about their spiritual beliefs.) Like many New Agers, they often believe that Christianity was invented by the Catholic Church and took literally everything from older pagan traditions, in addition to being nothing whatsoever more than a tool to deceive and control the masses. Many view all religions, no exceptions, as nothing more than means of controlling and exploiting people. This hypercynical view of religion makes it easier to believe in things like conspiracy theories about Jews controlling media and finances. Hell, some leftists will basically decide that any work of media they don’t personally like must have been deliberately made as fascist propaganda, as opposed to just being created by someone with shit political views, or someone who just didn’t think things through - and never will these particular leftists ever stop to consider that maybe they just misread the media. This is no different than those right wing assholes claiming every other movie is full of “Illuminati symbols.” Leftists also sometimes fall for anti-pharma conspiracy theories, under the reasoning that because drugs are sold for excruciatingly high prices under capitalism, drugs must have been invented for solely capitalist purposes. They’re convinced that after the revolution, the causes of our illnesses will no longer exist and we won’t need medication anymore. (Yeah, sorry, serious illnesses have always existed.) So yeah, you are not immune to conspiracy thinking. Absolutely no one is.

A really good example of this is certain (usually western) leftist narratives about CEE (Central and Eastern European) politics and history, especially when it comes to the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation

As someone with a manipulative mother, if you learn more about Dylan and Mia, Mia is an extremely uusual woman.

That's not to say you can't believe Dylan's story, but Mia had very many adopted children, including several who died young, and her surviving children state that she was abusive and controlling. the core of your argument is that trans people do not exist. They should not change their bodies to match their gender, and they should not be seen as a different gender to what their body is.

In this scenario, a trans persons view of themselves is irrelevant. They will be seen as their body and should not change that body, and should not complain about this, lest they hurt gay people. Ignoring how many people in these two groups see eachother as natural and overlapping allies.

Also veganism comes from a place of privilege a lot a people can not afford because it is expensive, need time to be prepared and is low in nutrition/calories compared to animal based alternatives, also you cant freeze tofu properly, nut allergies are the most common allergy in the world etc.

because veganism destroys a lot of cultural heritage especially to native cultures

because taking honey actually helps bees

because the problem is not animal based products but greed and capitalism

because these vegans don’t care about animals or the environment really, they do it to feel morally superior to omnivores 

Wild ride of no one considering the ethics or planetary effects of factory farming meat. Like, i guess you're saying sort out human rights first but it is all connected. We are not parts of a machine. Animals are not parts of a machine. Honey is not the major divide for vegans and non vegans it is meat eggs milk and fish. The amount of animal products consumed is unsustainable not to mention pressures it puts on on antibiotic immunity and land use.

It is not a moral failing to be non vegan. Same way it is not immoral to buy an iphone. But mass meat consumption is as much a part of capitalism as fast fashion or mass transit and bears thinking about with some skepticism even if you do not change what you are able to buy.

Also are we just pretending that all workers and environments within meat farming are ethical and safe for workers? I know vegans may be unpleasant but let us at least stay in reality a little. Disclaimer. I am not vegan.
