The Politics of Newfoundland and Labrador

@nlpolitics

Politics and news from the eastern most province of Canada.
Anonymous asked:

idk how many NFLDs follow this account but the tuition situation at MUN right now is insane. They completely abolished the tuition freeze keeping education accessible here and > doubled tuition fees. The govt is pushing this as a positive for the economy but i don't know if anyone will be willing to stay here anymore when better universities are cheaper.

There's also @nlpolitics if this ask doesn't help.

I'm not as active as I'd like to be, and I'm VERY layman so I'm often confused on politics lingo and such things. Which is probably why I'm not actively posting news articles from this province

But, I have been following Newfie reactions to the tuition freeze on twitter, everyone HATES IT

If you are looking for an alternative way to observe Canada Day, here are links to two important documents: the TRC’s Calls to Action, and the final report on the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

I’m using today as an opportunity to consider tangible ways that I can work towards reconciliation with the Indigenous peoples of Canada, both as a citizen of Canada, and as a healthcare professional — not just in light of recent discoveries on the grounds of residential schools, but because justice demands action for those whose land was stolen, whose treaties were broken and ignored, and whose people will continue to be affected by the impacts of injustice for generations.

My grandmother was a residential school survivor; an Inuit woman from Labrador. There were residential schools in this province, where the indigenous communities were. I never knew her, and only met her twice due to poverty making the trip from the east coast of the island to central Labrador difficult.

The genocide of the Beothuk is why there aren't as many residental schools on the island as there are elsewhere. But the schools were here in this province, because it's Newfoundland AND Labrador.

I found this article from 2016

And this book

About 200 people gathered at the steps of the Colonial Building in St. John’s Saturday, protesting cuts to post-secondary education.
The anti-austerity rally was organized largely in response to the provincial government’s decision to phase out the annual $68.4 million subsidy that has sustained Memorial University’s long-standing tuition freeze.
“When we see cuts to funding, we see prices going up,” said Kat McLaughin, chairperson for the Canadian Federation of Students’ St. John’s chapter, the group that planned the protest.
“Education is a larger barrier to marginalized folks as folks from low income backgrounds are marginalized, racialized folks,” she said. “They’re the folks who are going to struggle the most with higher education, higher tuition rates.”
Strolling down Water Street doing some window shopping, enjoying the thriving live local music scene, dining out or just passing through. To the casual eye, St. John’s might seem like a city rich in history, ebbing and flowing with the economic tide, but continuing. Alive and growing.
One might never suspect that a mere 30 years ago, this bustling metropolis was reduced to a crater of smoke, mud, and irradiated ash.
How could a city once known for its jellybean houses and equally colourful local culture have fallen on such ruin? Well, blame America.
Captain America.
The chief electoral officer of Newfoundland and Labrador has postponed voting on Saturday for 18 of the 40 districts, as the province deals with a rapidly worsening outbreak in metro St. John’s.
The election cannot go ahead in the districts — all on the Avalon Peninsula — as COVID-19 cases have caused “considerable operational impacts,” said Bruce Chaulk in a release Thursday afternoon.
“Many election workers have resigned out of fear of interacting with the public on election day. We cannot hold traditional polls without the support of these people,” Chaulk said.

I try very hard not to tell people how to vote.

however, if you plan on voting for the liberal party, it is time to stop saying you support indigenous people, and it is time to stop saying you support the environment

I could make a long list of reasons, but I can really sum it up like this: pipeline

justin trudeau's support of that pipeline violates indigenous rights, and is extremely detrimental to the environment

I'm starting to get really tired of people claiming they care about these things, and then turning around and supporting trudeau or scheer (and while elizabeth may is good about the environment, she falls short of fully supporting indigenous rights)

either you care about indigenous rights and the environment, or you support politicians who build pipelines. you can't have it both ways

Former Newfoundland school teacher charged with sex offences against student

A 38-year-old former teacher has been charged with sexual offences against a student who attended a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The RCMP allege the offences occurred at Roncalli Central High in Avondale, N.L., about 70 kilometres southwest of St. John’s.

Noel Strapp of Harbour Main, N.L., is facing charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation in connection with incidents that allegedly occurred between 2014 and 2016.

Strapp was arrested Thursday and has been released on conditions to appear in court March 2.

The RCMP were contacted about the allegations in November of 2019 by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, the police agency that received the original report.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 21, 2021.

Curiosity about a free newspaper in his mailbox turned into surprise when former St. John’s mayor Dennis O'Keefe found his name printed inside — in a story that said he, along with the mayor of Calgary and other officials, was a target of interest for the Chinese Communist Party.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said O'Keefe outside his St. John’s home while holding a recent copy of the Epoch Times, which was distributed this month for free to households in the region.
“I mean, I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, believe me. But this one really takes the cake.”
The article said O'Keefe’s name was found in a 2019 document that came from the Foreign Affairs Office in Daqing, a city in northeastern China. The paper said it obtained the document that included names “spanning a wide range of sectors and countries in which the Chinese regime seeks to cultivate talent.”
O'Keefe retired as mayor before the 2017 municipal election.
“It’s just inexplicable,” said O'Keefe who called the article “terribly misleading,” and said nobody from the Epoch Times contacted him for comment.
