The demographic for this is so miniscule I'm certain no-one will ever benefit from this post, but if you're a punk, especially if you're just getting into it, and you want a break from the loud, energetic music, but don't want to stop hearing about how cops are bastards and "fuck the government! Fuck capitalism! Let's rise up!" Then check out Pete seeger, luke Kelly, dick gaughan... hell, most folk singers from like, the fifties to the nineties will have something or other.

Similarly, if you're a goth, emo, or metalhead looking for morbid, beautifully corrupt lyrics, then listen to twa corbies, the ballad of Timothy Evans, a cautionary song, even the cruel wars! You'll find more songs in a similar style if you try

Folk is an incredibly diverse genre. You can find anything you're looking for in it. There's wild, extatic, energetic melodies for everyone, ballads a power metal listener would love, tongue twisters that would impress the fastest rapper, and love songs that no autotuned cooperate pretty boy could ever come close to. Just give it a chance

Declutter Tumblr

The new layout it a whole mess. Thankfully Xkit can already help with a bunch of this! I’m sure it’ll give more options soon.

Vanilla Tumblr: (I have marked in red what can be removed. The tabs can be set not to stick, so you will really only see them at the top of your dash. Empty box on the left for hidden notifications and shop sparkle, i just didn’t have any. I’m EU so no Live for me).

Capromeryx, a small pronghorn, resting between the antlers of a giant Cervalces.

The word "small" here is doing a lot of heavy lifting. These guys were tiny. We're talking about an animal that comes up to about knee-height.

Imagine a dik-dik, but a dik-dik that's more closely related to giraffes than to other artiodactyls. That's Capromeryx.

It's true, here you have Capromeryx next to a Californian turkey, which was just a tiny bit larger than the modern turkey. Both have been found in the La Brea tar pits.

It’s so fucked up how tiktok culture has made clout-poisoned people turn the public into content, every day I see people minding their business have their entire faces put online for thousands of likes, a couple kissing on the train, a lady dancing across a cross walk, a guy nodding his head to the music at a club, a lady buying a banana at the store, ring camera footage of the neighbors kids being stupid. Just let people live jfc

Avatar

I think I may have made it seem like this is about wholesome content (which my sentiment towards that is the same) but most of the time when I see this stuff people are being ridiculed for being completely normal. And I didn’t make up any of these examples btw, I couldn’t find the dance one but only because there are too many videos of people being recorded at cross walks

(Faces censored and additional text added by me)

Im gonna add this to every post about this i see im never gonna shut up about it. This will get people killed. This will ruin lives. More people live in hiding than you think. So many people are one post away from having to abandon their whole lives. Dont ever post anything of anyone without their consent, stranger or not.

I am a photographer. It is my job to go into schools and take candid photos for the yearbook.

The number of kids that are on a 'do not photograph' list isn't large, but it is a non-zero number. If that kid is even out of focus in the background, we do not use that photo.

If a child shows even the tiniest bit upset that there's a person in the room with a camera, I do not take their photo.

At pop culture conventions, I ask people if I can take their photo. Or if I take a candid of them, I track them down and give them my info and get th3ir consent before posting.

At events like parties, concerts, performances, consent is generally implied because these are photographed events, but if an attendee approaches me and tells me to crop them out then I crop them out.

This makes street photography tedious, but I learned in my very first job as a camp counselor that people have very good reasons for not wanting their photo publicized. There are kids in the foster system with abusive parents. There are adults with stalkers. There are people who might be a witness to a crime.

Even outside of this- I've seen how private persons become memes against their will just by going out in public. Some people are super not normal about meme fame.

Leave people alone. The world is complicated. Make your own content.

What the fuck

This is absolutely fascinating. I've now been looking at Alex Colville's paintings and trying to work out what it is about them that makes them look like CGI and how/why he did that in a world where CGI didn't exist yet. Here's what I've got so far:

- Total lack of atmospheric perspective (things don't fade into the distance)

- Very realistic shading but no or only very faint shadows cast by ambient light.

- Limited interaction between objects and environment (shadows, ripples etc)

- Flat textures and consistent lighting used for backgrounds that would usually show a lot of variation in lighting, colour and texture

- Bodies apparently modelled piece by piece rather than drawn from life, and in a very stiff way so that the bodies show the pose but don't communicate the body language that would usually go with it. They look like dolls.

- Odd composition that cuts off parts that would usually be considered important (like the person's head in the snowy driving scene)

- Very precise drawing of structures and perspective combined with all the simplistic elements I've already listed. In other words, details in the "wrong" places.

What's fascinating about this is that in early or bad CGI, these things come from the fact that the machine is modelling very precisely the shapes and perspectives and colours, but missing out on some parts that are difficult to render (shadows, atmospheric perspective) and being completely unable to pose bodies in such a way as to convey emotion or body language.

But Colville wasn't a computer, so he did these same things *on purpose*. For some reason he was *aiming* for that precise-but-all-wrong look. I mean, mission accomplished! The question in my mind is, did he do this because he was trying to make the pictures unsettling and alienating, or because in some way, this was how he actually saw the world?

omf i never thought i'd find posts about alex colville on tumblr, but! he's a local artist where i'm from & i work at a library/archives and have processed a lot of documents related to his art. just wanted to give my two cents!

my impression is that colville did see the world as an unsettling place and a lot of his work was fueled by this general ~malaise?? but in a lot of cases, he was trying to express particular fears or traumas. for instance, this painting (horse and train) was apparently inspired by a really tragic experience his wife had:

iirc she was in a horrible automobile crash, as the car she was in collided with a train. i find it genuinely horrifying to look at, knowing the context, but a lot of colville's work is like that? idk he just seems to capture the feeling you get in nightmares where everything is treacle-ish and slow and inevitable.

Yeah. They did that. I bet the ‘clarification’ came as a result of some strong legal threats.

So be aware in the coming weeks that if your favorite actor reportedly says something shitty about the strike that makes your blood boil? Check the sources. There’s going to be a lot of uh, spin in the news.

100% Disagree

It’s an underdog story about classism in which the folk hero (Johnny) is confronted by a powerful man (the Devil) who tries to exploit the hero’s perceived ignorance and inferiority by offering a great reward with impossible odds. Although Johnny warns him that looks can be deceiving, and that he’s going to regret the dare because Johnny is the “best there’s ever been”, the devil is blinded by his greed and arrogance.

The devil creates an awful cacophony of technically excellent fiddle playing that would be impossible for Johnny to replicate. It’s a trick.

But Johnny just grins at him and starts to play “simple” classic country fiddling songs - Fire On The Mountain, House Of The Rising Sun, and Daddy Cut Her Bill Off. He doesn’t rise to beat the Devil - he simply creates his own music from his home, in the style that he knows, and his love of it and the familiarity of the music make his “backwoods” fiddling more perfect than the Devil could ever achieve.

It is thus the devil’s pride, not Johnny’s, that allows Johnny to Bugs Bunny his way into a golden fiddle.

(In that sense, I do agree that it is the most American song: in a land of prejudice and inequities, great power lies - dormant but ever-present - in those we underestimate and attempt to exploit.)

"But she gave birth to you, you owe her!"

My mother wanted to be a mother. It was her dream to be a mother. She poured all her energy into being a Good Christian Mother.

She did not want me. She wanted motherhood. I was a side effect of her dream. Once I was old enough to disagree with her, she hated me. I wasn't making her look like a Good Christian Mother. I was loud, disobedient, needy... almost like a child. Not quiet and pretty and grateful for crumbs.

Yes, she birthed me. For herself and her partner. For the people who were already born. Not for me. As all mothers have for all of time. It's not the birthing that makes a mother worth honoring, it's the parenting.

i think that we as people need to get more pissed at nintendo for making nintendo online a subscription service like actually they should go fuck themselves for that

yeah what the fuck . i already paid fucking 60 bucks for splatoon can i just play it

I LITERALLY MADE THIS POST ABOUT SPLATOON i bought it months ago but when i realized i had to pay for online for multiplayer i was like. oh. okay. hasnt touched the game since

The best part is you aren't actually paying for anything. Nintendo doesn't have actual servers, all their multiplayer games run on peer-to-peer connection. It's not even covering server costs or anything, it's an empty charge.

don’t forget during the WGA strike that animation is not covered under the WGA deals and as a result animation has gotten the shortest possible end of the stick in under-staffing, under-paying, and generally turning the field into gig employment.

please sign the petition here for Disney to recognize animation production workers as a union and reblog this post!

Y'all sorry for not clearing it up in the original post (frankly I thought more people would read the link) but this applies to influencers, professional cosplayers, content creators, and the like. Basically, people who make money off cosplays or otherwise promoting the

There is an official FAQ on the SAG-AFTRA site that details it better than the email (which came out probably right after the email did, hence why I missed it. I'd have just posted that link if I'd seen it).

Please be aware that although this strike might be of great inconvenience to you, that's the point. This isn't convenient for anyone. This isn't easy for anyone. That's the point. Between WGA and SAG-AFTRA, thousands and thousands of people are not working, and it's going to keep being like that until AMPTP wakes up and pays these people their fair share. Rather than complain, find ways to support the strikers (the link's final question offers ways influencers can support the strike, although frankly some of their suggestions aren't limited to just influencers).

adults of tumblr how on earth do you decide on what mattress you want to order

Go to the store.

Go to the store and lie on it for five minutes.

I know online is cheaper, but go to the store. Online delivery has a send back guarantee, but do you really know yourself capable of and willing to dismantle your bedroom because it didn't work out? No? GO TO THE STORE.

Go to the store and try it out and compare prices and nine out of ten times, they will match the online prices for you, because you're THERE and they can't afford to let you walk out empty handed.

Try it out, figure out the right hardness for you. Make sure you're comfortable.

A good mattress will last you 20-30 years depending on how often you move and how well you commit to taking care of it: vacuum it regularly and flip as per instructions, usually once every six months.

A bad mattress costs about the same as a good mattress, up front, except for the fact it will fuck you up for years and you might end up with chronic pain because of it.

Go to the store. Try it out.

I got a 46% discount and 18 interest free installment payment on mine, just cause I was physically there.

Figure out your budget. Go to the store. Ask to try it out. Make sure it feels good.

You deserve a good mattress and you deserve the money you spend to be worthwhile.

You've got this.

Also a lot of those trendy online-only delivery mattresses are not quality controlled, multiple people have discovered their mattress was stuffed with fiber glass only after it ripped and spewed sharp fibers over literally all of their belongings

found this informative, about how studios are going to attempt to use influencers (particularly small ones) to try to cross pickets by paying a lot for movie promos, and that SAG-AFTRA likely will not let you in if you do this. my suspicion is they're hoping people won't understand the implications so wanted to spread the word!!

Ah, guys, just to be clear, I realize most of you probably know this but I’m seeing it framed….weirdly, so –

Tumblr is not $30M in debt. You can’t get Tumblr out of the red by giving them $30M. I mean you can, for a bit, but Tumblr is operating at a $30M deficit. That means yearly, Tumblr is spending $30M more than it earns

None of this is to say we can’t have a Crab Day and try to get that $30M covered, sounds like fun! But that just means Tumblr breaks even for the current fiscal year. Tumblr has investors that want profits (or, well, I guess it’s Automattic’s investors, but regardless they want profit), so in order for it to continue operation, it has to either become Genuinely Profitable Very Quickly, or it has to do a fundraising round of some kind and get even more investors on board, which is really just kicking the problem down the road a year or two.

And either way, the extremely slick and semi-alarming pitch Tumblr is making about all the changes it’s going to make to increase engagement and such is still going to be necessary, because that’s where the money is, unfortunately. I don’t like it either (my favorite bullet point from that pitch is that they will email people who have their notifications turned off, because sure, that sounds like it won’t annoy anyone who like me was already overly inclined to be annoyed) but like. Baby needs a new pair of shoelaces.

None of this is to be alarmist or anything, I just got a bit worried about all this talk of $30M in debt, because this is not a one-time deal.

Oh, so that’s why it’s applying such changes? @jv can you confirm this?

Avatar

Uhmm, yeah, OP post is basically right, it’s not that Tumblr has a 30 million debt*, it’s that umblr loses 30 million to its parent company every year.

But while the post is correct, I don’t totally agree with OP conclusion. Yeah, if suddenly Tumblr users generate 30 million they are just taking Tumblr out of red numbers this year, but … That’s a lot already.

That means Tumblr would be open at least another year, probably more. Because there is a very significant difference between Tumblr and other platforms that may be in shambles right now: Tumblr is not its own company, but one of the business lines of Automattic Inc.

You see, Twitter, Reddit… They are their own, independent company, where very rich people had invested very serious money. That means if things go bad enough (either organically, because of the CEO being a moron, or because their userbase decides to boycott them), and they end closing, that rich people would see the money they invested just go *poooof* and disappear. So they need to do anything for that to not happen.

But Tumblr? It’s just a wanky business unit within automattic, so if it happens to lose too much money and it’s forced to close… The Automattic investors would just shrug and smile seeing their investment improve its value.

Automattic profitability would improve considerably by getting rid of Tumblr, and that puts Tumblr at a permanent existencial risk unless it manages to stop costing more than what it earns.

So yeah, if this crab day thing could be a success (it won’t, I don’t know where they got their active user number, but it’s an order of magnitude off), if a single day of sales could make Tumblr profitable this year… I’m pretty sure the Automattic board would be much more willing to keep bankrolling this place a bunch of years more even if it goes back to lose money.

Which of these would you rather see on your dash?

Hey @staff. This is a perfect example of why collapsed reblogs is such a bad idea. Seeing the full thread, you go like this: 😮 ooh, that's cool 😀 "they're free," hehe! 🤣 "16 cents," perfection!!

I have achieved joy, I feel positive feelings toward Tumblr, I want to engage, I want to stay, my eyeballs land on more ads, you make more money, everyone wins! 🎉

Seeing the collapsed thread, you go like this:

😮 ooh, that's cool 😐 "16 cents"? yes, that's literally what the pic shows, not sure why you felt the need to say that

There is no motivation for me to uncollapse the reblog chain—it looks like a boring conversation about the denominations of coins. And even if I do uncollapse it, you've ruined the joke by showing me the punchline before the setup. I am sad, Tumblr is boring, I go elsewhere to entertain myself, I see less ads, you make less money, everyone loses. 😥

Reblog chains are the best thing about Tumblr. They are your unique super power. They are the thing that makes people screenshot Tumblr and share it around. Why on earth would you kneecap them??

I don't know exactly how you plan to implement this. Give people the option to keep them collapsed if there truly are people who are annoyed by how long they can get (you already have a version of this feature), but don't collapse them for everyone or new users by default. Please. It will make Tumblr so much more boring.
