We're experiencing widespread 500 errors due to a hardware failure, but we are working on getting the Archive back! (No data has been lost.)

Date: 19:40 UTC December 22, 2023

We expect the 500 errors to continue on and off for at least 5 hours, until about 01:00 UTC (check what time that is for you).

If you get an error, try waiting a few moments and refreshing the page.

Date: 19:58 UTC December 22, 2023

To be on the safe side while we finish some work, we'll be putting the Archive into maintenance mode at 22:30 UTC, about 20 minutes from now. This means the site will be down for everyone. We expect this to last anywhere from 1-5 hours. We'll keep you updated!

This was a terrible journey.

Picture me and one of my coworkers kicking back at my cubicle and talking football.

Him: So did you ever read 17776?  Me: Oh, haha, the joke website? Him: Joke website? Me: Yeah, wasn’t it a substitute rickroll for like a hot minute?  Him: No, it was an online serial. Me: Yeah, that was the joke, right? The internet kept making up stories about what the website was? When in reality it was like a dumb joke website. Him: *sounding uncertain* No. It…it was real.  Me: *equally as uncertain* Wasn’t it just a joke? You clicked on the link and it would show an article about football for a few seconds and then the browser window would just turn black.  Him: What. Me: What.

So then he made me google 17776 and click the link to the official website and it loaded, and then immediately the screen went black.

Me: Ha, see, it just –

And then shit started to load and I stared at it in total bafflement.

Me: That…never happened before. *horrified* I thought it was a stupid meme! I thought it was like Inspector Spacetime where the internet made everything up! Him: Holy shit. Me: Holy shit!  Him: so are you going to read it? Me: What’s it about? Him: Despair, examined through the lens of football. Me: I think I was happier when I thought it was a rickroll to be honest. Him: That’s fair.

samuel copperbadge storyteller this is the funniest thing i’ve ever heard

you ASSUMED the internet was doing a dropbear style prank INCLUDING ART AND FANFIC AND THINKPIECES instead of thinking that MAYBE YOUR INTERNET WAS SLOW

Look the amount of fan-generated content that has just flown right on past me on this hellsite because I have neither the time nor the energy for homestuck style shenanigans cannot be measured by any human conception of mass, volume, or energy.

I continue to read a tag that has been throttled by the monstrous weed of fiction surrounding the eight-bit video game Undertale. I lived through the darkest depths of Mystrade. I participated actively in the highest spires of Clint/Coulson. I have contributed to the mythos of Stabby the Roomba. I have fled the oncoming tsunami of Inspector Spacetime. I have witnessed Jar Jar Binks becoming a Sith Lord in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate.

If the internet wanted to take three paragraphs of a prank article on the future of football that turns black after about ten seconds and spin it into an epic galaxy of fannish content about a bunch of sentient satellites, it could. All it would need is one charismatic ringleader to say “Hey what if?” and the rest would come naturally, like an avalanche, under no-one’s control but with everyone’s involuntary participation.

If the entire country of Australia can preserve the tourism industry by conspiring to conceal the true threat of drop bears behind pretending it’s a funny joke you play on tourists, I think fandom can invent 17776.

Throwback to the time I discovered, several years late, that 17776 actually had content and wasn’t an internet prank that Tumblr Goncharov’d.

Wait! You'll get postal stamps with dnd characters and settings? I'm jealous. Forget dnd, this is some exciting fantasy art used for public postal service.

They've actually done quite a bit of sci-fi and fantasy art in the past! they always do Year of the Dragon stamps when it comes up in the zodiac

They did classic comic strips one time that had Prince Valiant among others, plenty of comic books and pop culture in general, these cool space fantasy ones back in 93:

Several years worth of Halloween ones, specific author ones, there are stamps for every nerd!

This last run was painted by the brilliant Stephen Hickman. A bright light taken too swiftly. Much love to his family and his memory.

New Detective Conan gadget idea:

A tablet that has complete privacy and cannot be tracked or traced. That way when Conan has to research shit during cases he can just use the tablet. It also acts as Conan's Shinichi phone and (all the calls and data have rerouted to the tablet ig). That way he can avoid the suspicion he gets when carrying around two phones. Also-

he pretends to be an ipad kid

The Hanged Man: ultimate surrender, sacrifice; new perspectives, letting go

[Image ID: Two images of digital art of Obi-Wan Kenobi as he appears in A New Hope as the Hanged Man tarot. He is hanging upside down from his right leg, suspended from the grey tractor beam control tower by black cables wrapped around his ankle and calf. His other leg is bent loosely behind, and his cloak is draped over it, sweeping towards the right behind him as if caught in wind. He is holding his blue saber ignited vertically in front of his chest and face in salute, and his eyes are closed and expression peaceful.

Obi-Wan’s head is haloed by a light blue glow and a large circular window split into panes by six spokes radiating out from the center. Outer space full of stars can be seen through the window. To its left is a cluster of light blue kyber crystals and a rebel pilot helmet in profile, and to the right is a cluster of red kyber crystals and the Millennium Falcon. In the top left of the image, three stormtroopers stand cradling their guns on a narrow bridge that crosses horizontally behind the control tower. On either side of the image is a grey light panel such as those found on Imperial ships. The backround is dark grey.

The entire image is surrounded by first a white border, then a larger black border. Centered in the black border is the text “XII” at the top and “THE HANGED MAN” at the bottom in bold white letters. There is a large slash cutting horizontally across the image around Obi-Wan’s chest level as if a red saber is being swung in that direction.

The second image is the same as the first, but without the text and the red saber slash.

A picture that says “A student once asked anthropologist Margaret Mead, “What is the earliest sign of civilization? The student expected her to say a clay pot, a grinding stone, or maybe a weapon.

Margaret Mead thought for a moment, then she said, “A healed femur.”

The second picture is a news headline. It is bolded and a much larger font. “27-year-old who couldn’t afford $1,200 insulin copay dies after trying cheaper version.”

The third picture is the same font and size as the Margaret Mead quote. It’s a continuation. It says, “A femur is the longest bone in the body, linking hip to knee. In societies without the benefits of modern medicine, it takes about six weeks of rest for a fractured femur to heal. A healed femur shows that someone cared for the injured person, did their hunting and gathering, stayed with them, and offered physical protection and human companionship until the injury could mend.”

The fourth picture is another headline. It is in a large and bolded type. “Dying man who couldn’t afford to go to hospital after vomiting blood"

The fifth picture is a screenshot of the Margaret Mead story.

Mead explained that where the law of the jungle—the survival of the fittest—rules, no healed femurs are found. The first sign of civilization is compassion, seen in a healed femur.

The next screenshot is of a slightly different font. The letters are pointier and the lines are a little curvier. It says, “Susan Finley returned to her job at a Walmart retail store in Grand Junction Colorado, after having to call in sick because she was recovering from pneumonia.

The day after she returned, the fifty three  year old received her ten year associate award — and was simultaneously laid off, according to her family. She had taken off one day beyond what is permitted by Walmart’s attendance policy.

After losing her job in May 2016, Finley also lost her health insurance coverage and struggled to find a new job. Three months later, Finley was found dead in her apartment after avoiding going to see a doctor for flu-like symptoms.

A screenshot of a bold, bigger headline. It says ‘The house always wins’: Insurers’ record profits.

A final screenshot of smaller text with a slightly gray background. It says “We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.” /end ID.]

6. Favorite title you used

Sure, we'll answer this a second time! I also liked Möchtest du ein Pfannkuchen? as a title, because it's so fun to say AND it's gratuitous German!

12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

Idk how many I'll actually finish and post, buuuuut let me count...and we'll even give some WIP titles for funsies (which y'all are free to ask about): Desert Music, Grief to Love, In the Cage, Rope and Czerny Go to the Laundromat, 5+1 Ebenholz Scars Fic, Louder Than Sirens / Louder Than Bells, Snuggled Into Your Heart, Collar, Fitting Room Blues, Open Wide...plus finishing the next chapters of Get Out Alive, Steel Tracks on Hallowed Ground and (If You Hurry, You Can) Still Catch the Tide, plus one fic for a friend of their AU AND at least one planned ficlet for the Game of Gods MFRP.

So uh. 12 new fics and 3 fic updates, at least? I don't expect to finish even most of these, but yeah. I have a lot of WIPs.

(And that's not even counting the ideas I haven't started writing yet. Like the assorted AUs...)
