Hey guys. Mod Jay and I (Mod Bella) wanted to address the controversy circulating around the zine and ourselves. We both agreed we owe you all a fair opportunity to make up your own minds on the matter. (If you would like to read a more in-depth rebuttal from Mod Jay, feel free to check it out here)
Recently we learned about a post going around claiming we (specifically Mod Jay) are “homophobes”, “bigots”, and “anti-diverse”. Many of the screenshots they used were out of context and grossly misrepresent us. Mod Jay and I are Christians and we have conservative values. That said, just because we are does not mean we are anti-diverse or “homophobes”. Those who know us, both on the internet and in real life, know this and will vouch for us.
We have never judged anyone based on their race or sexuality. The majority of the participants in last year's zine identified as LGBTQ+ . We chose people not based on their race, gender, or sexuality, but rather on their talent. We loved the art and stories they created and brought them on board. We are proud to have brought together a diverse group of people with different views from all over the world to create something the whole fandom can enjoy. We wanted to create an escape from the current political climate and just have fun. We never forced our views on anyone nor would we want to.
Some people felt our rules were “homophobic”. This is far from the truth. We wanted to create a zine based on canon content. That includes canon ships. And while there is discourse about canon relationships, at the end of the day they are still canon and no one can dispute that. With non-canon ships it’s more difficult and contentious because there is more speculation there. I (Mod Bella) have been a part of multiple zines that were run by people with many different views. In these zines, the mods used the exact same wording we did pertaining to canon ships and SFW content. They wanted to stick to only canon ships. In one case the moderators just banned ships outright from the zine to avoid problems. This is not an uncommon rule, no matter the views of the admins.
It has come to our attention that another zine was launched to rival ours. We have no problems with someone doing their own zine and we most certainly do not have a problem with people joining both or just doing theirs, but what is not okay is that this rival zine ripped us off completely. Their timeline, FAQ, layout, theme and info posts are exactly word for word, copy/pasted from ours. This is plagiarism. If people want to create a zine, they can, but at the very least they should take the time to write up their own content and theme and let the people decide what they want. Like we said before, we will not discourage anyone from joining if they want to. There can be multiple zines running simultaneously, but please bear in mind that this zine is plagiarizing us and that is not okay.
We do plan on continuing our zine. We are not going to stop just because others are jumping to conclusions without even knowing who we are as people. Our hope is that you make your own conclusions about us and our zine. We love this fandom dearly and hope to create more positive content. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to chat with us off-anon. We would love to talk to you and address anything you would like to know. <3
With much love,
-The Ninjago Zine Team
