Have you forgotten what we were like then when we were still first rate and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth

it’s no use worrying about Time but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves and turned some sharp corners

the whole pasture looked like our meal we didn’t need speedometers we could manage cocktails out of ice and water

I wouldn’t want to be faster or greener than now if you were with me O you were the best of all my days Frank O’Hara

“In order to succeed the newsboy must be a fighter. He must guard the particular piece of sidewalk where he sells his “papes” against all comers. “And there’s only one way to do it,” as a Park Row “newsie” expressed it. “You’se got to scrap for it. If a kid tries to butt into your route, you’se got to knock ’em out, or he’ll knock you out. Only the women we don’t bother. There’s a bunch of women ’round the bridge that’s been there since it was built; and they can stay, too. We’se got nothing coming against them.”“ - New York Tribune, April 17, 1904

There was something almost fragile about this small bookshelf; you had the feeling that were you to pull out a book or two, looking for the poet’s marginalia, the whole precarious edifice might crumble in a second.

Mandelstam suggested that a writer like himself doesn’t need to compose an autobiography. It is enough to simply list the books he has read and a biography is ready. Such a writer’s biography could be seen as a kind of bibliography where the bookcase appears like the hearth of a lost homeland. For Brodsky, the bookcase had an additional practical function: it helped the teenage poet separate himself from his parents, with whom he shared a space in a communal apartment. The bookshelf remained like a barricade and a salon decoration; it enabled Brodsky to have half a room of his own. This became in Brodsky’s words, his virtually expandable lebensraum, a space of aesthetic and erotic adventure. Brodsky believed that these few square meters of space would remember him fondly.”

- Svetlana Boym, Joseph Brodsky’s Room and a Half (from The Future of Nostalgia)

Dorothy Day, one of the most important American Catholic leaders of the 20th century, had an unexpected past. Her early years included a bohemian lifestyle in New York, an abortion, and a child born out of wedlock. She later co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement, a pacifist, faith-based movement for social change that still exists today. Day led the Catholic Worker Movement from its beginnings in the Great Depression through the Vietnam War era. Day fed thousands of people, wrote newspaper columns, novels and plays, was arrested several times in protests, chain-smoked for years, and at times lived on farms as part of an agrarian, back-to-the-land strand of the Catholic Worker movement. She died in 1980 and is now a candidate for sainthood in the Church.

A new biography that illuminates Day’s activism and her complex personal life comes from someone who knows both well. Writer Kate Hennessy is Day’s youngest granddaughter, and she relied on family letters and diaries, interviews, and her own memories for her new book, Dorothy Day: The World Will be Saved by Beauty.

MIKE BROWN WAS INNOCENT

New footage shows that Mike Brown indeed didn’t rob that convenient store afterall. The video shows Mike entering the store at around 1 a.m on August 9th, 2014, to exchange something (possibly marijuana) for cigars. Before he left the store on that night, he went back to the counter to possibly tell the clerk to hold on to the items. Later on that morning, he went back to the store to retrieve the item. That’s it.  Let’s also not forget that the store owner been admitted that Mike Brown didn’t rob the store.

The police lied, the police fabricated, and the police try to defame this young boy in order to cover Darren Wilson’s ass. Unfortunately, this new evidence will not bring Mike Brown back, but it does further expose the extreme corruption within our law enforcement.

I have pals getting into phd programs at Ivies and thats so fuckin cool. Im so impressed with my pals.

But they aren’t documented so they wouldn’t be pa…..nvm

This is a huge misconception for regular Americans. When the government uses the phrase “undocumented” they’re using it incorrectly because if they were truly undocumented then they would’ve be in system. However these immigrants are in the system and they pay taxes, file tax returns and get no benefits that citizens and legal residents get. They also get to see ICE showing up at their doors because the government has their addresses. Fun fact. “Undocumented” workers pays $12 billion dollars every year in taxes. https://www.google.com/amp/www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2016/10/06/how-much-tax-do-americas-undocumented-immigrants-actually-pay-infographic/amp/

Reblogging for info.

“Undocumented” just means “without papers,” i.e. a social security card, valid visa, etc. They’re still on databases and whatnot, they just don’t have the documentation that allows them to reap the benefits.

so if it didn’t click- the government is aware of their presence and gladly taking their money under the table while simultaneously promoting the idea that undocumented people are a threat and encouraging hatred and distrust of them it’s super messed up, literally the scheme of an evil villain, and it’s really happening

I’ve supported them in the past but unfortunately can’t afford to give right now. Donate if you can and spread the word!

Chanel V. had an ID while she was living on the street. She applied for many jobs with no success.
At one of her interviews, the manager said,“Everything looks great. The only thing we need is your background check,”which would not be a problem with her clean record. She gave him her ID, which said Jonathan. The manager looked at the ID, and then looked at her, and said, “Thanks for coming by, we will get back with you.”
The call never came. This is a common occurrence for our transgender residents. Their ID does not match how they present. Legally changing their name and gender marker is essential for securing employment and moving through life as who they are.

Please spread the word and help raise awareness for this campaign and this incredible center in San Antonio which supports homeless LGBT youth!
