So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????

I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.

Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

Saw a sharp increase in my follower count after posting this. The legitimacy of it is driving me nuts so I also feel the need to say that you can follow anyone on here regardless of whether you’ve interacted with them or not. People like the above mentioned blog are exceptions. Perhaps they themselves think they aren’t and therefore will act like they aren’t, but they are, trust me.

Just follow anyone you wanna follow. The worst thing that can happen is maybe getting soft-blocked by the other person, but if they do soft-block you, then they were never that worth following in the first place.

wow. really hope this isn't actually a norm taking hold with new users! this isn't facebook, you don't need to know people before following them

Follow anyone you think is neat, that's what the function is for. You're not like sitting in their house raiding their fridge, you're listening to them yell out of the window

I don't know if 'demon from fiction where demons aren't contrasted to angels' should count given the nature of this poll, and we don't know what the heck our spiritual introject is, really, so...

Having of seen a lot of support for both sides of the conflict, I have gotten the impression that Israel is using stratagems and tactics suggested by the USA, leading to nastier outcomes.

Meanwhile, I conclude that HAMAS is probably dangerously slow on the uptake here. Like - I doubt that their an outright suicide cult? And at this point I do have to exclude a portion of what is said about their actions as outright lies, too, but there's definitely enough evidence to say dangerously slow on the uptake.

Also, regarding the blog support - its very weird to be hammering in on the phrase "HAMAS is the democratically elected government of Gaza" like a lot of the more active pro-Israel bloggers have. Assuming that that's truthful in every word and implication, even a landslide election only suggests some 70% or so support, with more normal elections, regardless of particular system, having 55% to 60% or so support. In other words, that doesn't justify anything one may be trying to justify that way. (And its pretty darn clear your trying to justify something with that phrase, even if I'm not sure what most of the time.)

On the other side of things, its odd that those favoring a palestinian government are taking that 30k number as absolute. Under current conditions, there is for sure no way for HAMAS to provide accurate casualty statistics, and while Israel may be able to provide total casualty statistics, if it cares to do so (it probably doesn't, and most likely instead only counts direct kills), it probably doesn't have any way to reliably distinguish civilian and military kills.

Like asking if a hippo should be large or wet. Obviously they should be both

I mean, if I have to pick just one then sexy, but why is this a choice?

what do superheroes with secret identities do in worlds with daemons. how are you supposed to stop people from realizing it's you when you're the only known person in the city with a daemon of that specific species.

Unless you're able to separate and team up with a witch's daemon or something. Or you're still a kid.

The daemon wears a costume too. Duh.

I mean obviously, but no costume's good enough to hide the fact that your daemon is a kangaroo lol

actually kind of ticks me off a little because this is an excellent example of what is probably my favorite editing technique, Match Cutting

Note how the Tom and Jerry footage cuts right on the impact frame, going strait to the impact in the anime footage, and how care is taken to maintain the same direction of the momentum in both, creating a feeling of connection between the sources, even when the quality of video and styles of animation couldn't be more different.

This is a technique that happens all the time in filmmaking, one of my favorite examples is this scene from the Kingdom Hearts 2 opening, which is recapping events from Chain of Memories, cleverly using match cutting to show two important fights that happened at about the same time as each other.

And going back to the original video, not only is it satisfying to look at, but it also (albeit probably unintentionally) illustrates the ways in which western and eastern animation have basically always been in conversation with each other. Classic Tom and Jerry is (at least in my opinion) the pinnacle of slapstick comedy, with it's excellent animation capable of selling punchy and hilarious impacts. Take this shot for example:

A slow build up, as Tom shaves the log down into a bat, followed by a sudden impact on the dog. It works because it starts slow, and hits fast, and that is the basis of all slapstick comedy. And the wonderful thing about slapstick is that unlike other forms of comedy, like puns or observational humor, it requires no translation. Tom and Jerry in particular almost always depicts a David and Goliath struggle, a clever underdog against a large and powerful opponent, which is relatable and understandable to all audiences, and easily localized due to the shorts having little to no dialogue, thus explaining why the series is beloved throughout the world. It's been referenced in manga and anime from Stardust Crusaders to Fruits Basket!

And that brings us back to Anime. Slapstick is a huge part of the humor in tons of series, to the point where it even bleeds into some of it's tropes. Just think of one of the classics, a character finds himself in a compromising situation with one of the girls, and what happens as a result? (for some reason this outdated meme was the best example I could find as an isolated clip im so sorry)

This scene from the same series is practically a slapstick sketch in and of itself:

And of course, that same level of power initially developed for comedy proved itself highly effective for action, and nowadays anime action scenes are well known for their moments of high impact, utilizing the same animation techniques

tl;dr: Without even meaning to, by tying together the western slapstick comedy of the past and the eastern action sequences of the present, this meme edit is a celebration of how far we've come. And that's pretty cool.

Been thinking a bit on the controversies around harry potter's author, since I read a bit of fanfic, and, well - in recent years, I have to come to the opinion that the best possible way to get at someone is to turn their own work against them.

And, well, like, besides which, while don't give her more money of course, its clear that the supposed political stratagem of telling folk to never engage her works is pure foolishness.

(And its not like American schools actually teach critical thinking anymore; I may of dropped out of high school, but it was in what's generally called a "middle upper class" neighborhood, which I have since come to learn means working upper class, so from what I hear, that's more than most are getting, and I didn't get any critical thinking in that time.)

Back to the point of writing this - and I know its possible I just missed this happening - why not call her by the least traceable name of the main villain? Ya know, you know who. Don't hyphenate it or anything, I don't even recommend capitalization - in fact, if its not clear that she's the one your talking about without reading a sentence or two around it, the best analytics *these* days won't be able to filter it out from the (admittedly few, so it may be for the best to use those more often too) other uses of you know who.

pokemon theory i just thought of: new pokemon appear in the pokemon universe when they're designed in this one. they're created ex nilho but they have retroactive realness; they weren't here yesterday, but today they've always existed.

pokemon researchers have had to suss this out on their own over decades, and it's a really unpopular theory, made worse by the fact that no one can come up with a better one. from their perspective pokemon generate spontaneously but in both chronological directions, and the similarities of many pokemon seem to be detived from a conscious and creative understanding of the world--their world, though? what other world could there be?. there are ice cream pokemon and pokeball pokemon and sword pokemon and trash bag pokemon.

there are so many pokemon with both wings and a beak. is this like swords? is there an ur-flying type that this class evokes? there are so many canine pokemon. but what is a canine? is there such a thing? there's only one set of sword pokemon, right. one tea-set line. is *feline* a coherent category? would the ur-feline have two legs or four? why do so many pokemon have humanlike bodyplans-- but then again, why so few?

pichu has always been the prior form of pikachu. why didn't it get counted in order? why do we call it that instead of saying pikachu is the middle evolution of the pichu line? why can so many trainers remember finding this out well into their journeys? why didn't ash start with one?

this is why pokemon researchers do a lot of labwork, drink heavily, and use ten year olds for field research. you can't have an existential crisis if you don't even know what time is yet.

things that the pokemon researchers regularly fight over at scientific conferences:

-is there any meaningful correlation between type and likelihood of a humanoid evolution

-why are pokemon more likely to evolve towards a bipedal bauplan than away from one

-if pokemon dont have genitalia why is it that the more closely they resemble adult human proportions the more likely they are to have mock-clothes over where their genitals aren't

-when a pokegenesis occurs (the entry point of a new pokemon into the universe's timeline) (you have to think of it as an entry point because once it happens it goes backwards into the past as well as forwards into the future) do all the new instances of the individual pokemon arrive as a big lot of eggs, and spread out from there, or as the ages and in the positions they would have been if they had always been there, because now they've always been there

-why isn't there a bicycle-shaped pokemon yet?

-do we categorize pokemon by self identification (the cat pokemon know they're cats) or by similarity of build and ability (fish pokemon)

-are the indefinitely young trainers in chronostasis (their age has been fixed to a certain unmoving point OR unmoored from the forward flow of time) or are they just experiencing periodic chronoregression (they loop a very short period of aging OR are reset to a pre-event age) by their entanglement with multiple pokegenesis events

-is exposing prepubescent children to significant chronological aberrations ethical even if they really want to

-how do you stop a ten year old with a dragon from doing anything they want to do

-was the world always round or what

fun fact! as of scarlet/violet there are have always been bicycle/motorcyclish pokemon!

it puffs up its throat sac and curls its tail up and *runs along on all four legs*, you know, exactly like a real bicycle.

behold, a bicycle Cyclizar!

oh we are getting UGLY DRUNK at this year's pokeconference

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode has an answer for this! Every single copy of every single pokémon game is a separate dimension, and the Link Cable is a device for traveling between those dimensions. Giovanni of Team Rainbow Rocket also uses the Ultra Wormholes in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon in order to assemble a group of all the evil team leaders from all the teams to date from dimensions where those teams were successful in their ambitions.

From this information, we can extrapolate that every new generation takes place in a timeline where future pokémon didn't exist. This doesn't provide a satisfying answer to why Pichu has a dex number so separate from Pikachu, for example, but in the real world we realize what we thought were the same species were actually multiple separate ones all the time. It's entirely likely that scientists just didn't realize Pichu and Pikachu are separate species until after they'd catalogued Pikachu.

i like that there exists a cord that will let you access an alternate dimension where your world is bigger and has more stuff in it and all that happens is some shitty assholes import a bunch of other assholes to do dumb asshole shit

like, literally any geologist on earth would murder a mafia boss with a rock to get a shot at running around in Bigger Earth Now With Extra Continents, to say nothing of feral zoologists, how did giovanni survive this nonsense

I was (likely)shadow banned for tagging fic updates- how to save yourself:

Thanks to a lovely suggestion, I looked into tumblr's new(ish) 'subscribe to the conversation' feature since, by all apparent deduction, tagging people (as requested by them) on fics has gotten me shadow banned.

How subscribing to a conversation works:

  • On the website, you subscribe by clicking the ... navigation on the upper right of the post and selecting 'subscribe to the conversation'.
  • On the app, you subscribe by clicking 'notes' on the bottom left of the post and then the bell icon in the upper right.
  • You will be notified of every reply and reblog with fresh content.

To set this up for replacing tagging:

  • Create either a side blog or a non linked blog.
  • In the blog settings, under replies, set it to 'Only members can reply' (website) /'Only Tumblrs you follow can reply'(app).
  • (I am hoping that the website one becomes the standard as at the moment you will have to ask mutuals not to comment.)
  • Create an Update post on this side blog that says something such as "Subscribe to this post to be notified of updates to x fic!", a link to the work on the main blog, and any other relevant information.
  • As you make the Update post, click on the menu icon in the upper right as you are making the post and under 'Who Can Reblog'(website)/'Reblog Control'(app) change it to 'No One'
  • THIS WILL INCLUDE YOU. (You can change it again by editing the post and going back to the menu.)
  • You can create as many Update posts as wip you have.

To use this for replacing tagging:

  • When you want to update your readers there is a new part, edit the Update post to include links to where the update is posted.
  • Reply on the Update post that there is an update and that the link in the post. "Chapter 5 posted! Find the link in this post!"
  • Readers can click on the notification to go to the post, then click on the link to go to the new part.

It's a bit of a faff, but once set up it's actually easier than tagging! No list to maintain, no limits, people can manage their own subscriptions. And may save you from being shadow banned like me!

There's some folk being very aggressive about using the subscribe conversation feature instead of pestering people, without bothering to ask if there's other requirements. Such as the ones being broken by them being able to comment on the post.

If you are a mentally disabled peep who thinks md folk are above physically disabled folk in the struggle? Go fuck yourself and dont talk to me.

Disability is disability. Diff shit, sure. But same stink and equally as valid. And yes I get peeps have fucked each other up before in the struggle for rights and humanity before. Which is exactly what Im talking about rn. Because its that punching down bullshit again. Walking over each other and then pointing out how "well were better than them atleast?" Shove it up your ass if you got one. Or any other hole. Im not picky.

Were in this shit. If we like it or not. And we gotta figure it out together. But youre scum if you think demonizing others makes you a punk. Or a real activist or whatever.

And yeah. That included self diagnosed folk too. Diagnoses are a privilege. Hard to come by. And sometimes very dangerous. And if youre a real one you know that.

So shut the fuck up and quit being assholes. Fuck the system up. Not each other.

She has a ponytail, is looking at him to her right with both hands raised in anger and with frown. Man sits beside her with tan skin, an uncomfortable frown, full body cast and neck brace. There is a text bubble leading from the woman asking "Why don't you just try harder?" (The words "try harder" is underlined for emphasis.) Text at the top reads [#mentalillnessfeelslike]. There is a logo at the bottom left for Mental Health America. And the artists watermark on the bottom right that reads [Gemma Correll]

Image

Image description: There is a plain white background with pink and black text. The pink is in a more elegant font. The top line is in pink and larger than the rest. It reads, "I AM SICK". The next line is in the smaller simple, black font. It reads, "I'm not stupid or mentally disabled. I'm not crazy. It's not stress, it's not in my head. I'm not causing this to myself. I'm not making it up. I'm learning about myself everyday. How well I deal with this sickness. I can still do things for myself. I like my independence, but sometimes may need your help." Then the font changes to an equally small pink, elegant font and reads, "Don't take that as weakness, or that I'm giving up. I'm trying the best I can." Finally, in the black font again it reads, "We all need a little boost from time to time, lend a hand. You never know how much it could mean."

Okay, like "door" then?

No, that's the same sound as or again. Thinking about it more, I suspect it comes down to 'its kinda an o, but it's weird, so double o'

(With reference to this post here.)

When it comes to evaluating the cost versus utility of abilities in a tabletop RPG, it's important to remember that, from the player's perspective, a character being removed from play even temporarily is a cost. It's arguably the most significant sort of cost that can possibly be imposed, insofar as it's a cost which imposes itself directly upon the player by removing their ability to participate in the game.

This means that occasions to make use of such an ability are likely to be rare for two reasons: first, because players are disinclined to use a ability when the benefit doesn't measure up to the cost (and the perceived cost of being removed from play is high), and second, because frequent removal from play naturally limits the player's ability to do anything, even if their character gets better later on.

Of course, you can offset the high perceived cost by making the effect of the ability very powerful, but that runs the risk of our ticking time-bomb of a character overshadowing everybody else; even if they don't use their self-annihilating "I win" button in a given situation, the knowledge that they could is going to warp everybody else's priorities.

This isn't to say that abilities which remove a character from play as a cost are impossible to work with. They're just a huge pain in the ass to get right, and they're so strongly self-limiting in terms of how frequently they're likely to come into play that it's rarely feasible to build a character around them.

Which brings us back to the central conceit of Eat God, where every player character is built out of exactly three rules toys. Asking someone to take up a third of their entire character sheet with the ability to blow themselves up isn't a winning play from a player engagement perspective, no matter how you implement it; either they use it rarely and a third of their character sheet is dead weight, or they use it frequently and spend most of the session removed from play. Neither is something I'm inclined to randomly inflict on a game.

Visible fire alarms have nothing to do with fire alarm manufacturers. It has to do with a fully deaf person working alone late at the office when the alarm goes off, and asphyxiating because he doesn’t know to get out.

Building codes today (in the US at least) are written by the ICC and ANSI. I’m sure there’s contractors in there but mostly they’re materials scientists and engineers. Is the code complex? Yeah, but it’s not impenetrable, and it’s complex because it covers almost every possible building. Your local credit union branch and the tallest skyscraper in the US were built with (largely) the same codebook.

The main issue I have with code is that so much of it references standards and other rulesets which are paywalled. Someone has to shell out money to private standards firms in order to comply with the law.
