Never Say Never pt. 3: Dinner
Pairing: Alpha!Bucky x Omega!Reader (eventually)
Warnings: None this time.
“I decided not to show up to dinner.” Bucky face planted into the bed of his best friend.
“Why?” Steve sat beside him. His hands hovered over Bucky. He didn’t know if Bucky would appreciate a pat on the back or something.
Bucky mumbled something into the mattress.
“What?” Steve leaned in close.
Bucky looked up and saw Steve’s face uncomfortable close. It made him roll off the bed rapidly and he fell to the floor. He got up quickly and brushed off any dirt that got on his shirt and repeated, “I just think this is a bad idea. They’ll hate me.”
“They won’t hate you,” Steve put his hand on Bucky’s shoulder in comfort. Bucky brushed away Steve’s hand and sighed loudly.
“I begged Y/N to be there so you have to go.” said Steve firmly.
“Y/N, Y/N, Y/N. Why can’t you stop talking about her? Are you in love with her or something and—and you want my approval?” said Bucky, “If you want it, you can have it, Steve. I really don’t care.”
“I’m not in love with Y/N. I sort of already have an omega…” Steve shifted on the bed, “I just want you to have a friend other than me and she’s a great friend.”
“Yeah? What’s so great about her?” Bucky crossed his arms as he remembered her giggles when Bruce had confronted him earlier.
“She’s….” Steve trailed off in thought. He was trying to phrase everything correctly.
“That’s what I thought.” Bucky scoffed and laid back on the mattress.
“And smart and nice and she can fly and she’s not your average omega!” Bucky mocked Steve.
“I just don’t get why I have to be her friend specifically.”
“Look, Y/N is the kind of friend who will stick with you no matter what as long as you prove to her that you’re a worthy friend. She’ll never lie to you. She’ll stick up for you even when she’s at a disadvantage(this was meant to be a reference her status and stature as omega). She’ll inconvenience herself just so you feel comfortable. She’ll push you to become a better person. She’s amazing and if you don’t want a friend like that then, you’re not good enough to be her friend.” said Steve passionately. He remembered the times that Y/N had been there for him when he felt homesick. He remembered when Y/N gave him hope about Bucky. He remembered that even during the Civil War, she stood by his side.
“Yes, since it means so much to you, I’ll prove myself worthy of being her friend.” Bucky rolled his eyes and punched Steve in the arm, “Punk.”
Steve punched back, “Jerk.”
You felt nervous coming to dinner. You believed that Steve was planning something embarrassing for you and you weren’t excited. You picked up a burger and fries then tried to find where Steve and everyone were in the cafeteria. You scanned the room until you spotted the blonde man waving his arms frantically in the air to get your attention. You smiled and headed towards the table. Everyone was already there and eating. Steve made space on the table so that you would sit between him and Bucky. Bucky didn’t seem to notice and continued to eat like an animal. You ignored Steve and sat opposite of Wanda and in between Sam and Natasha. In this position, you had the choice of visually ignoring Steve and Bucky.
“So… how was everyone’s day?” Wanda surveyed. The question was met with shrugs.
“Someone undressed in front of me while I was at the clinic today.” You said casually while looking at Bucky. His face grew red.
“Seriously?” Sam laughed.
“Probably an alpha,” said Sam.
“What’s that supposed to mean, SAM?” Natasha glared.
“Oh nothing,” Sam played innocent while bringing food to his mouth.
“It is not nothing!” Natasha kicked him from under the table
“What did you mean?” Natasha prodded.
“Just that you alphas are always thinking about knotting.”
“That is not true!” Steve interjected looking positively repulsed.
“Yeah, it’s only when we’re around Y/N,” Natasha winked at you and scooted closer.
“Y-yeah right!” you choked while blushing.
“You’re just so hot,” Natasha whispered while sniffing you. Your face turned a deeper shade of red.
Bucky shifted in his seat. His muscles tensed as you produced a stronger scent as a reaction to Natasha. He assumed it was because you were somewhat aroused. That assumption aroused him in turn. Natasha took notice and smiled,
“What do you think, Bucky?” She wrapped an arm around you and brushed your hair back. She looked at Bucky and asked in a sultry voice, “Isn’t Y/N just the hottest piece of omega you’ve ever encountered?”
Bucky looked at away in an attempt to avoid answering. Your scent still titillated him.
“That’s enough Nat,” you said firmly. You knew that Bucky wasn’t attracted to you at all. You didn’t want to embarrass him by forcing him to confess his honest opinion and having everyone dislike him for it. Natasha shrugged and continued to eat.
You quickly changed the subject, “So Wanda, since you’re the one who brought up the question, what happened to you today?”
She smiled coyly, “Well…it happened last night actually.”
“What happened?” Sam shifted in his seat and leaned in closer.
“Vision and I bonded.” Wanda squealed. At the word “bonded”, the room suddenly turned its attention to your table. A couple of omegas within earshot migrated to your table.
“What was it like?” one omega from out of nowhere asked. You looked at the omega with distaste. Who did this omega think she was? Did they know Wanda? That’s a question to ask a friend and Wanda was not a friend to them.
Bucky saw your face and chuckled. The honesty in your face was refreshing to him. Steve noticed and elbowed his friend teasingly. Bucky shook him off.
“It was the most amazing thing in the world!” claimed Wanda and she continued, “We were passionately making love when all of a sudden the room turned white and it was just me and him. I felt our souls fuse.”
More omegas came. Their scents filled the area. You watched as Natasha, Steve, and Bucky sat up, alerted by the aromas. You looked to Sam knowing you shared the same thought, Alphas. The other omegas buzzed excitedly. They congratulated Wanda and expressed their yearning for a mate to bond with. You sat quietly and ate your burger. Wanda continued to describe the bonding feeling while you sat unamused. The last thing you wanted to hear was this sappy crap. Your distaste for romantic, cheesy stories wasn’t necessarily out of bitterness. It was true that you resented the fact that nothing romantic ever happened, but you sincerely thought the romantic notions were gross and over the top. Sometimes you wished you weren’t so cynical, but you couldn’t help it. You continued to eat in silence while getting less and less well-manner in the way you ate. You chewed with your mouth open while glaring at everyone (especially Steve who gave you a sorry smile). Unbeknownst to you, Bucky sat still and watched you. He noticed that you didn’t react the same way the other omegas did and it made him more curious about you. Steve quietly stood up and left. It was evident that the number of omegas was getting to him. Natasha, on the other hand, loved the wafts she was getting. Her hands slowly crept around one of the omegas.
By the time you finished eating, new omegas had arrived and Wanda told her bonding story for the sixth time now. You looked at Sam who seemed as uncomfortable as you. He nodded to you and you both got up to leave. This was not how you pictured tonight at all.
“I was suffocating,” You confessed to Sam while throwing away your trash.
“Yeah, me too.” He took a deep breath.
“You’re lucky you’re a beta.”
“You guys are less sensitive to the pheromones and any headaches that are caused by too many scents.”
“Yeah, but I think we miss something. Like we’re not as in tuned with our partner.” He rubbed the back of his neck, “Anyway, I’ll see you around. I’ve got to go see someone about a horse.”
You bade him farewell. As you turned, you bumped into Bucky. His chest is so firm.
“How come you didn’t like Wanda’s story?”
You breathed in deeply and breathed out, “I thought it was sappy. I’m not into that kind of thing.”
“So?” You frowned and crossed your arms,
“You’re supposed to want all those things. An alpha, a bond mate, pups…All the other omegas liked it.”
“Just because I’m supposed to want something, doesn’t mean I’ll actually want them. Besides, I’m not just any omega. ”
“But it’s in your very being! How could you just ignore your natural instincts?”
“I don’t know, I just don’t have the urge to have all those things.” you shrugged.
“But you’re an omega.” he repeated.
“And you’re an alpha who walked away from a group of omegas you could potentially bond with,” You inserted your hands in your pockets “to talk to an omega who you said you weren’t even interested in mating with.”
“But don’t you feel unfulfilled?” Bucky ignored what you said.
“But…” Bucky stepped in front of you and whispered intensely, “you’re an omega!”
“So? Are all omegas the same to you? We’re all just slaves to our primal instincts? Because I believe that we’re more evolved than that.”
“Well?” You pressed on. Bucky still said nothing.
“I’m sorry for earlier,” Bucky whispered.
“The thing that happened in the clinic.” Bucky stared at the ground and put his hands in his pockets, “I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable or anything. I just…I really thought you were my doctor.”
“Yes, good night.” Bucky walked away.
You frowned as he walked away. This was going to be an uphill battle.
