ok but what if this was an inside joke they had. That Jonathan noticed things about Billy at school, if anyone would notice abuse and its effects (shaking duffers WHY DIDN'T YOU THINK OF THIS DURING MINDFLAYED BILLY WHY WHY) it would be fucking Jonathan goddamned Byers, who we know watches. So he sees, and knows shit's fucked at home for Billy Hargrove, how he stashes snacks in his car with blankets and it's just so obvious.
After shit went down at the Byers' (s2), he had to tell Joyce. He wasn't going to let one shitty night make him draw the wrath of Joyce Byers, he would NOT have survived that. So he admits what he's seen of the Hargrove kids. Mostly Billy.
So Joyce sends Jonathan with double lunches. Extra snacks. Jonathan stumbles in on Billy getting rather friendly with Steve Harrington on one of these missions, and while he's not that surprised about Steve (he doesn't like to think about that), he somehow missed Billy, which is dumb in retrospect, but he blames the knowledge of hidden bruises and sleeping in class.
AND it's because of Jonathan bringing Billy food and Steve seeing that Steve later get this plaque on this bench and they fuck on it. Billy secretly loves it.
billy renting videos just so he can leave horny notes in the boxes when he returns them for steve to read when hes gotta check them for rewinding but sometimes it results in a very unhappy robin slapping a note down in front of steve, traumatized that she's just read for the 5th time a very detailed description of how billy cant wait to suck steve silly after work
