oh but how absolutely monumental it still is to have all these big and mainstream pieces of queer television right now. remember how excited you got when there was one character who said he was bi or gay only then to be killed or written off or treated horribly by both writers and the public. remember how hard it was to find queer shows and movie that didn’t make you hate yourself or so angry or scared. remember how seen you felt about that one queer kiss or that one coming out or within one particular character! yes, devastating sad queer pieces are important. fucked up queer stories need to be told. queer period pieces and dramas with unhappy endings too. but queer happiness, queer young and old love, queer cringe, queer joy- we deserve that too.

heartstopper is so funny to me bc it’s like almost all young up-and-coming teen actors and then just. academy award winner olivia colman is there to have four lines a season

You can say that representation and diversity doesn't matter or that its 'cringe' or argue about how it is or isn't good enough, but tell that to my 50 year old mother. Who binge watched heartstopper (of her own accord) and is now on her 3rd re-watch. Tell that to my mother who has since sat me down and had serious conversations asking me about my experiences and apologising for how she reacted when I came out. Tell that to my mother who once said she would never understand trans people and that she was 'just too old for that' and couldn't accept them, and has now realised what that attitude does to kids. Who has made facebook posts about how beautiful the story is abd how she wishes it came out when she was a kid and told all of her friends to watch it for the sake of their own children. Who is now researching ways to promote inclusion and education surrounding gender identity in the primary school she works at.

You can say it doesn't matter and that people can never change. But you'll be wrong.

every so often I remember that whales molt

I’m not sure why I feel this way, but imo this is the most cursed marine mammal fact I have ever heard

THAT’S RIGHT AND THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME SO I CAN INFLICT THIS ON EVERYONE AT 1AM!

Mammals normally shed their skin in small flakes all the time when their skin cells die off, but because whales are living in the ocean -AKA, Bacteria Stew- flaking off like that would cause microabrasions (really tiny cuts) that would mean the whale is continually fighting off infections.  So, when a whale needs to replace it’s dead skin cells, it preps it’s new skin underneath, then sheds all it’s dead skin cells at once, like a lizard:

but not having hands makes it hard to remove this gross film, so molting brings many whales clsoe to shore where they can roll around on rocky/sandy coastal seabeds to scratch it off.  Here’s a bunch of Beluga coming in for a mass scratch:

And THIS is what a chunk of Sperm Whale Molt looks like, floating in the water before it’s devoured by pelagic microfauna, because you take what calories you can get in the open ocean:

wish it still held in one big piece like a snake though. Wish you could be swimming in the ocean and you see a huge empty whale billowing like a balloon. like a latex glove a hundred feet long. imagine getting tangled in that. what if you died cause you got caught in an empty whale like it’s a big blanket

You know what… This really is one of the only alignment post that get the chaotic and lawful descriptors correctly aligned.

On the Lawful side: the two people who have to follow the recipes nearly exactly for the results they want - baking isn’t quite am exact measurements process but the margin of error for experiment is very, very thin. Tempering chocolate for use in structural works even more so.

On the Chaotic side: cooking and mixology where the margins of error for ingredients and portioning are so broad “whatever feels right” is almost never the wrong answer. The same recipe could be done a dozen different ways for a dozen different people and all of them would be a great outcome with minimal disaster in their wake.

This could also be an allegory for the difference between wizards (bakers) and sorcerers (cooks) - they’re all magic users (chefs), but the type of magic the weild and the source of their power is vastly different

You know, I was originally thinking that Dylan and Shiadanni should swap, but this convinced me they were properly placed, well done.

How is Dylan evil though? That’s either nonsense or worse.

Don’t look at it as a description of them personally, but rather the things they create. Dylan isn’t evil in a traditional sense, any more than the Tipsy Bartender is, but the things they create provoke a very visceral “Oh no what the fuck?!?!” sense of horror.

He’s called his own creations Abominations and War Crimes so i think he’d agree with this assessment

Six years working with child protective services should have taught him to keep a straight face even when confronted with the weirdest situations, but the social worker has to admit that he’s struggling right now. He looks down at his papers for a moment and then back up at his visitors.

No, the pointed ears are still there. So are the just slightly sharper teeth in their hopeful smiles. In fact, they look exactly the way they do in the stories. Right down to the emerald green eyes.

“Excuse me,” he says, nervously clearing his throat. “Could you go over that for me one more time?”

“Certainly! We would like to apply to be foster parents.”

“Right…” The social worker looks anxiously from one of the couple to the other. “But…but you’re fae.” He really doesn’t know a way to be delicate about this fact.

“Oh you noticed!” the one on the right says. (The couple introduced themselves as Mr. and Mrs. Peters, but he doesn’t remember who was who and as far as he is concerned their appearance gives him no clue whatsoever.)

“Well, yes,” he says uncomfortably. “And this being the case, I did wonder…”

The Mx. Peters (surely that can’t be their real name) on the left nods understandingly. “Of course, it’s quite alright, we do understand. But you see, the whole changeling thing doesn’t really appeal to us at all.”

“Taking care of a human child sounds wonderful!” their partner smiles brightly. “And we have plenty of room to love one or two more! But we simply refuse to give ours away, and that is regrettably a big part of the changeling business.”

“Your children?” the social worker blinks.

“Yes,” the parents beam proudly. “Two of them,” one of them adds. “A wee one of barely four summers and our eldest, who is nearly eight.”

The other smiles enthusiastically. “It is preferred for foster parents, is it not, to already have children of one’s own?”

The social worker pulls himself together. “Yes,” he says. “Yes it is.” Parents are parents, aren’t they? And if he forgets about the teeth, and the ears, and the intangible feeling that his carpet might start sprouting daisies, these two are giving off practically nothing but parent vibes.

“So you’ll consider us for the programme?”

He nods. “Yes, certainly, I will. Just—” He clears his throat. “We will need to visit your home fist, to verify your circumstances.”

“Of course!” the parent on the left agrees.

“That should be quite alright as longs as we remember not to offer refreshments,” their partner nods.

The social worker nods along and silently scribbles a discrete little note on their file. He is going to have to have a talk with his supervisor about this. And another thing—

“I will need your full legal names for the forms,” he says, looking up.

The two fae meet his eyes with silent stares.

He swallows. “…a legal name for the forms?”

The radiant smiles return.

@thedupshadove your tags made my morning 😂

I think that 2023 is a good time for many of us, and allies in particular, to practice again the dying art of minding our own fucking business when it comes to the identities and lives of other people.

You see someone from one of your classes in a public place with a different gender presentation/expression than they typically have? Mind your own business.

You discover that one of your coworkers is in a same gender relationship, but they aren't out at work? Not your place to share that information in the workplace.

You notice that your neighbor in a red state takes a road trip across state lines with their transgender child every 3-6 months? No you fucking didn't.

You overhear students in your classroom using a different name and different pronouns for one student than you are used to using? If you live in a state hostile to trans rights, pretend that you don't know anything about this and report nothing.

You suspect that an acquaintance of yours might be gay, but they deny it when asked directly? Leave them the fuck alone.

One of your friends refuses to publicly label their sexuality? Good for them, you aren't entitled to that information anyway.

Your sibling comes out to you as questioning, but isn't comfortable sharing that with your parents yet? Keep your fucking mouth shut.

Don't out people; coming out is a personal choice not a moral obligation. Don't demand personal information about other people's sexuality or sex lives. You aren't entitled to information about anyone's gender identity, assigned gender at birth, or transition.

Bring back privacy, allow people to have control over the information that is shared about them publicly; it might save their job, their housing, their parental rights and their child's safety, or even save lives.

oh my god. it just hit me. the time they met in eden, the first time in crowley's mind, he asked aziraphale a question and instead of smiting him or ignoring him, he answered. for the first time in his demonic existence, someone answered a question for him without any thought, like he deserved to hear the answer. no wonder he immediately fell in love huh
