the tendency for racists and white supremacists to go gaga over their idea of ancient Rome is so darkly hilarious because of how entirely wrong it is. It’s not a twisting of some kernels of truth, it’s not a misinterpretation, it’s just the exact opposite, and people in Western Europe has been doing it for so long. For centuries people in Britain and Germany would be like/have been like “ah yes, we are special and superior because we are the heirs of the superior Romans” while next to a giant pile of writings by respected Ancient Romans who went “god, Britain is a dump and Germany is full of idiot barbarians. I wish I lived somewhere cool and cultured like Syria or Tunisia.”

#the amount of letters i read about roman soldiers bemoaning the lack of olives in britain is astounding

It's the first day of Gemini szn!♊👬

For this piece Castor and Pollux are representing the communicative twins🗣️ I am also following a sky theme for the air signs, with Gemini having the aurora borealis🌌 I was a lil worried that this wouldn't work but I'm so pleased with the results!

Also known as the Dioscuri, the twins Castor and Pollux were born to Leda of two different fathers (the former Tyndareus king of Sparta, and the latter Zeus), which is a common quirky theme in Greek myth. They went around the ancient world performing the usual "heroic" deeds, including rescuing their half-sister Hellen after the Trojan war. Since Pollux had divinity through Zeus, he asked his father to share it with Castor and then they were transformed into the Gemini constellation🌌

This Greek myth astrology series features each sign represented by a character or event in mythology (whether canonically related to the sign or not - I'm vibing). I'm currently finishing up the water signs, but who should I create next?

2,300-Year-Old Plush Bird from the Altai Mountains of Siberia (c.400-300 BCE): this artifact was crafted with a felt body and reindeer-fur stuffing, all of which remains intact

This stuffed bird was sealed in the frozen barrows of Pazyryk, Siberia, for more than two millennia, where a unique microclimate enabled it to be preserved. The permafrost ice lense formation that sits just beneath the barrows provides an insulating layer, preventing the soil from heating during the summer and allowing it to quickly freeze during the winter; these conditions produce a separate microclimate within the stone walls of the barrows themselves, thereby aiding in preservation.

This is just one of the many well-preserved artifacts that have been found at Pazyryk. These artifacts are attributed to the Scythian/Altaic cultures.
