i love my gay pirate dads

@naranjapetrificada

over 30 black enby queer. here to have too many feelings about the Gay Pirate Show. AO3. she/her, if you insist on perceiving me.

As the "dealing with grief and other big feelings dredged up by the 🌟Gay Pirate Show🌟" thing appears to be sticking around I thought it was time for a master post about my new favorite thing:

Healing thru fanfic!

I should say up top that a) I usually prefer fic that's canon-compliant or only slightly canon-divergent, especially for healing purposes because I think it helps with immersion and b) the list is short right now but it's definitely gonna grow as time moves on. Anyway, recs beyond the cut:

I love y'all but as someone whose job involves a "content calendar" I feel it in my bones that we're not getting the trailer today, or tomorrow, or even next week, at least not on the basis of somebody updating the official social media accounts alone. That's happening because somebody had a free moment or had previously blocked out time to get it done lol. I'll gladly eat crow because I would like nothing more than to have the trailer now but my gut says this is incidental and I don't like seeing the Friends In My Phone freaking out unnecessarily.

we have to admit to ourselves that once aziraphale fully realizes he can put his mouth on crowley that poor demon is gonna be covered in hickies at all times. it will be embarrassing for everyone like hello you're thousands of years old, not teenagers necking in the hallway. especially when crowley miracles them away the first time and aziraphale makes the pleading face emoji expression at him about it. zoinks

Since I saw him devouring that Ox I knew Crowley is in good hands

so funny to me that Izzy spends the entire season GAGGING to be dommed by Blackbeard, while Ed is spending the whole time giggling and kicking his feet daydreaming about being soft dommed by Stede and sparing nary a thought for Izzy and his fucked up Blackbeard hero worship. love to see it

love to see it, indeed!! Izzy is a terrific character. I love the OFMD writers' room so fooking much!

You know that middle manager who hit the ceiling of their intelligence getting their MBA at Dickfuck Community College (aka harvard business school extension) ? The ones that believe punching down is the only way to rise and spend the rest of their careers insisting they haven't yet reached the limits of their own incompetence? (Because they are not incompetent, you see. It's just that their brilliance is unappreciated.)

They're just competent enough. Useful tools -- but above all, tools. (NGL mine told me: "I'm giving you half the raise you deserve. If you play by my rules we'll talk about giving you the rest." I quit on the spot.)

"The thing about Captain Hands is..."

He's a fantastic character you don't have to do anything extra to make interesting or special, played by an actor who understands the assignment and is having a BLAST.

Every time a sapphic show gets cancelled, there are posts like:

"ALOTO should have get renewed instead of Warrior Nun, I like it better and think it deserves it more."

Or

"It's always the wlw shows and movies that get the short end of the stick while mlm shows and movies get all the promo/the second season renewal/the mainstream media attention."

Just one time I would like to see a post like this:

"Amazon spend a billion dollars on The Rings of Power and promoted the shit out of it, and even then it didn't live up to the hype and was a floppy mess. Meanwhile a show like ALOTO that also has the advantage of name recognition, has good viewing numbers, meant the world to queer people and even got a glaad award is apparently too expensive to renew."

Or this:

"They already renewed The Terminal List for a second season, a show no one has ever even heard of let alone seen, but is apparently the millionth action show with a cishet male protagonist, instead of spending that money on a sapphic show with a huge fan base and a unique premise."

Like, people, please stop the petty infighting and recognize the real problem here. It's not that queer shows compete against each other. It's that an unfortunately already way too small number of queer shows has to compete against the vast majority of non-queer shows, and none of the rich assholes at the top has any interest in supporting diversity and representation.

Hey uh so I just rewatched ep 4 again and I’m super emotional about something (what’s new):

Crowley and Aziraphale know they love each other. They know that. They’re well aware by now. They’ve said it in every way but outright. “To the world” and “You always do” and “I would like to spend —” and “I need you” etc.

But uh. Do they know why?

Does Aziraphale know why Crowley loves him? Does he know how captivated Crowley is by him? By watching him enjoy food and music and magic and books and everything? His passion and enthusiasm and the ferocity with which he loves things? Does he know how much Crowley loves his openness, his clever mind, his softness and the steeliness just beneath? Does he know how impressed Crowley is by him, how much Crowley loves that he will fight for what he wants and believes in, loves his courage and his sheer stubbornness and determination to make the world better, even if it means defying the will of god? Does he know how goddamn fond Crowley is of him? Does Aziraphale know that the very parts of himself he’s wrestled with for millennia are what make him so precious to Crowley?

Does Crowley know why Aziraphale loves him? Does he know how dear he is to Aziraphale? Does he know how much Aziraphale loves being challenged by him, pushed and tempted but always supported? Does he know how much Aziraphale loves watching him move through the world, watching him care and delight in it, with that boundless heart of his? Watching him be kind and silly and soft and curious and himself? Does he know Aziraphale’s favorite color is the color of his eyes? Does he know how much Aziraphale loves just being near him, spending time with him, how seeing him is always the highlight of his day, his year, his eternal life? Does he know that he makes Aziraphale’s life better just by being in it? Does Crowley, who thinks he’s unloved and unwanted and wrong, know just how much Aziraphale wants him, just as he is?

No, I don’t think they know. I don’t think they understand at all. And god that is heartbreaking. To know you are so loved but to not understand why.

A scene I wanted to address, because I think we need to, because there is some understandable concern over this.

So, Aziraphale's first taste of human food... he goes pretty nuts. He eats it as fast as he can get it down. He can barely stop to breathe. And I can see why that evokes the Greedy Fat Person trope for some.

Given that Gaiman is no fan of fatphobia, I'm pretty sure that's not the intent. But I won't lean on that. I'll go further, and explain what that scene evoked for me, and see if it makes sense to anyone else.

(To preface, I'm a fat person with blood sugar problems who DOES eat like a starving animal and has 0 shame about it. So I'm not just Not Seeing It because of skinny privilege etc. To get that out of the way.)

So first off, of course, it's his first EVER attempt at eating human food. The absolute lack of moderation could be explained by that alone. But I think it's significant that it's specifically meat.

Those who are familiar with the Old Testament know what I mean when I say that God is carnivorous. It's the entire reason he was a bitch to Cain and not to Abel. The Abrahamic god was one of many at the time that accepted burnt animal offerings, before later revisions attempted to wave that away because oops, it sounds too pagan. Flesh of livestock was a common and expected offering, and burning it assured that the smell and smoke and 'essence' would rise to the heavens.

With that in mind, consider what the taste of meat would do to an angel. What it might awaken in them, the first of God's creations?

Maybe it's the monster-lover in me, but I didn't see a fat man gobbling food. I saw an inhuman ancient entity of immense power that only disguises itself as a man, briefly succumbing to a primal and Earthly urge. It wasn't comical to me. It was almost frightening, in a very intentional way. Rarely do we see through the human guise in this series, see just how eldritch these ethereal beings really are, especially Aziraphale. But here he is, ripping almost uncontrollably into the flesh of another life-form with ominous music and thunder overlying the whole scene, and a demon staring at him with intense satisfaction and fascination throughout.

That's what I took from it. If I had to guess, I'd say that's closer to the intent. Again, partly from knowing the author, but also from the way the scene is shot. We're watching an angel partake in literal pleasures of the flesh for the first time, taking formerly living matter into his body. I can totally vibe with Crowley's reaction, tbh.
