A flower plucked at the stem,
I wonder “why I can’t think?”
Wishing I was like them...
Yet those thoughts push me to the brink.
When will my wings work?
And afford me serenity?
My legs trod slowly towards a fork,
Here I wait for eternity.
You were miles away,
We felt the distance...
I was next to you the whole time,
Yet we grew distant.

This Sandman short fan-film is amazing and you all should watch it.
Though the production values are decent and the costumes and effects are nice there’s a very big problem with the depiction of Morpheus and Death in this fan film. For starters, Morpheus kills in this thing…
This is meant to be a loose retelling of issue 3 of The Sandman: Dream a little Dream of me and the makers don’t quite grasp the over-all characterization of Morpheus or Death.
In Dream a little Dream of Me, when Morpheus gives Rachel her dream of Constantine, she was already dying / dead (the Dream sand was the only thing keeping her alive). When this short film’s junkie is placed in his dream, he was still very much alive and could have survived. Morpheus just condemned him.
The indication in this fan film is that Morpheus has locked that junkie in a dream and in the waking world he will likely starve to death. It’s not even ambiguous. Death says she’ll be back for him in a little while. And she acts like what Morpheus did was a good thing!
The character in this short didn’t really want a dream or fantasy. He wanted a reconciliation with his family and what does this version of Morpheus do? He f–king kills him. Creates a dream reconciliation for him and then leaves him to die.
Again, when he retrieved the pouch from Rachel in the actual comic, she actually was already dead. The dream sand was the only thing sustaining her. She was pretty much a zombie / ghoul-thing by the time he and Constantine found her. There was no saving her. All Morpheus could do was give her a gentle passing. So very different situation.
As a result this fan film doesn’t sit right for a lot of people.
For a much more respectful fan films I would recommend:
