PSA, there's a really nasty Discord scam going around rn. If one of your friends DMs you, starting off with a simple "hello" "how are you", may even joke around a little, and then starts asking you to look at a game/project they're working on, don't click the link, don't download anything. If you can reach that friend through non-Discord means, reach out and let them know they got hacked.

One of my friends said the link takes them to a very convincing video game page that has in-game screenshots and stuff, and then gives you an option to download a playtest zip file or something. That download exploits a weakness Discord apparently has for password protected zip files and steals your Discord log-in and changes your account info to the scammer's account info. Two of my friends lost their accounts. Be careful.

Slight adjustment to this... Apparently the virus scrapes all your passwords and files on your computer, not just Discord... It just uses Discord to gain access... Friend had a picture of his license saved on his computer, and apparently the scammers even got their hands on that... So it's a nasty little hack...

I actually like that all media is now created to be thoughtlessly consumed within a single alloted month before it's destroyed by business guys whose stated favourite book is a dingy unread copy of The Art of War they left on their bedside to "reference". it's cool that everything is just one middling budget twelve episode season and half of it is dropped all at once directly onto streaming services so you have to sit down for six miserable hours to watch it in the most antisocial way possible. this is probably how art was meant to be consumed. this is how humans best process things, like death.

I let it all pass over me like a limp breeze. did I see the new show? oh no, and I suppose I will not, but that's okay because I don't feel much of anything at all about it. [pleasantly] I don't feel much of anything at all.

You sound depressed or European. Not that there's much of a difference.

the most “cocomelon shit” i’ve ever experienced in my life was the time i was in calculus II and some girl in front of me was googling "assorted animals" and scrolling through pictures of clipart pigs and horses and shit on her laptop completely focused like it was her tax form

Notice: not only do your friends actually like you, they secretly like you twice as much as they let on

An experience that made me feel much more assured in my friendships was at college, a friend and myself were talking about a third friend of ours and how cool and knowledgeable and smart she is and how we feel like we could never be that cool. The next day I was working with a professor on some paper presentations we were about to have and when I came out of the staff room I was informed that these two aforementioned friends were having the same discussion about me. And it turns out we spent a lot of time thinking about our friends who aren't currently in the room and gushing over how cool and smart and talented they are without being able to say all of it to their face.

Your friends secretly love you a lot more than they already express, just like you love them so intensely that saying it all to their faces would sound clumsy to your own ears. It's true though

This reminds me when I was walking away from two classmates after saying hi to them, and obviously they underestimated my hearing range because I heard them talking about how cool I was.

Showing concern for an exploited woman is not homophobia"

The woman has three kids and a mother that needs her? Surrogate mothers face an increased risk of pregnancy complications. If something were to happen to her that would leave 3 kids and her sick mother without her.

A recent update (posted 08/09/2023) apparently Amazon has removed the books from Amazon and Goodreads. Most likely because of the pressure from her posts. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/aug/09/amazon-removes-books-generated-by-ai-for-sale-under-authors-name

Yeah this is just straight up fraud. It's distressing that services like Amazon and Goodreads don't seem to have methods for removing this kind of shit quickly and had to be pressured.

Amazon exists to profit off of scam behavior. They are always very aware that their systems don't work. They want to pretend as much as they have to and to actually fix nothing. The entire business model of the retail site is to trick people into working for free or for very little, and then to steal anything that works.

Amazon gets regular people to try their luck at opening an online store, steals their inventory and paymentd frequently and without recourse, and when any product is a big enough hit despite that, Amazon creates its own private label brand for it and unfairly competes on its own platform.
