While every force available in the world is searching for the 5 people in the oceangate submersible, a boat filled with mostly Syrian and Pakistani refugees sank under still “unknown” circumstances off the coast of Peloponnisos, Greece (with the coast guard present). More than 600 people drowned but guess which of the two is making headlines

"Vegan Leather"

Plastic. just say plastic.

How dare you leave this in the notes

Before anyone goes into vegan leather alternatives made from cactus or cork or fruit waste...

I heard of those too. I thought they were really cool! I thought it was a great idea! So I went and looked into how they were made!

They're all made by binding the organic material together with at least 50% plastic.

They're still all plastic.

A lot of neat fiber out there has really intense production processes. Fabrics made from bamboo, milk, and seaweed all have really neat properties (bamboo is heavy and feels like silk, seaweed is good for your skin) but they’ll never be as eco-friendly as wool or cotton.

So once again it’s probably best overall for the environment to source natural textiles ethically and take care of the items made from them. Leather can last a really long time if properly cared for and even if not properly cared for can often be restored. I heard a vegan once say that they would just buy leather shoes used and that was friendlier to the environment and animals than any alternatives.
