Character Survey 2: Family Ties

As promised, I have created another survey to help you better develop your characters. Be sure to check out Character Survey 1 first!! 

  • Where is your character from?
  • What is the climate like where you character grew up?
  • Did your character grow up in a small town, a large city, or somewhere else? How did your character interact with the other people in their home town?
  • How many people are in your character’s family?
  • Did your character grow up with both of their parents? What was their parents’ relationship like?
  • Did your character have any siblings? How did they get along? What are the names of their siblings?
  • Does your character have a family waiting for them? What is their relationship now? Is it good, or strained?
  • Who in your character’s family is still alive?
  • What is your character’s favorite childhood memory?
  • What is something that happened in your character’s childhood that still bothers them today?
  • Was your character’s family rich, middle-class, or poor?
  • What were the occupation(s) of your characters parents?
  • What was the family’s reputation in their town or city?
  • What are some things your character’s family observed culturally? Were there any holidays specific to their area, city or race? 
  • What is the greatest hardship your character’s family faced together?
  • What are some of their greatest triumphs?
  • Did your character’s family have any pets? 
  • Name three things your character’s family frequently did together. 
  • Which parent does your character feel they are more like? Are they proud of that, or are they upset?
  • Why did your character leave their family? If they are still alive, does your character have any intention of returning after their adventure?

  •  What is your character’s biggest regret? If s/he does not have one, why not? What would be something that they would regret if forced to do?
  • Your character is presented with the opportunity to save their world. If they do not, the apocalypse will come and their world will be destroyed. If they do, they may lose family, friends, and their home, but their world will be saved. What are their biggest regrets and reservations for saving the world (or would they prefer to remain ignorant and happily live out the rest of their time)?
  • When your character is angry or stressed, how do they calm down?
  • If your character were to imagine an idyllic place to spend a day, where would it be?
  • Does your character have a goal in life? Will they feel unfulfilled if they do not achieve it?
  •  Finally, a fellow party member has a secret. This secret may aid the party in their plight, but you are the only other person privy to the knowledge. However, they may have reasons for keeping the secret that you are unaware of. Your ‘leader’ is also unaware of their secret. What do you do? [Character Survey 2]

Character Survey 3: Mundane Details

So, your character has been traveling with a party for a while. It seems only natural that they would learn little details about each other, but there may not be time for them to come up in-campaign. In such a case, share this survey with your fellow players! If you’d like to build more on your character, please check out Character Survey 1: Morals, Ethics and Aesthetics and Character Survey 2: Family Ties!

  • What is your character’s favorite type of food, or specific dishes that they love? Is there a reason behind their fondness?
  • Does your character favor a certain color? Are many of their clothes this color?
  • What is your character’s favorite instrument? Can they play it, or do they just enjoy listening?
  • What is your character’s favored weapon? 
  • How does your character deal with having something on their mind? Do they show it, or get quiet? Do they talk about it? Are there any coping mechanisms they have that others may notice?
  • If your character is angry or aggravated with another character / party member, how do they deal with it? 
  • What are your character’s pet peeves?
  • How long does it take for your character to confront or deal with something that is on their mind / a problem? If contingent on the type of problem, what are they more capable of handling?
  • Is your character affectionate? Whom does your character choose to share affection with?
  • If a fellow party member has a problem or concern, how (if at all) does your character deal with it? Do they try to help? Would it depend on the party member?
  • What are some habits that your character has? Do they have a morning or night time ritual?
  • Does your character have any unusual sleeping habits? How much do they sleep, where are they most comfortable? Do they snore? When given the option, are they an early or late riser?
  • How does your character behave when they are tired or exhausted?
  • Does your character have any quirks that others might notice? Speech patterns, or things that they tend to do? 
  • How does your character’s constitution translate to their every day life? Do they tend to be prone to sniffles or are they generally sturdy? How quickly do they come back from major injury? 
  • How does your character deal with being less than 100%?
  • How does your character deal with temperature? Do they run hot or cold?
  • Does your character have a preference between indoors or outdoors? Where do they seem more or less comfortable?
  • Does your character have various outfits for different situations, or do they tend to wear just one? Do they have any interchangeable pieces, or any odd clothing habits/quirks?
  • How does your character feel about their belongings? What condition are their belongings in? Do they have more belongings, or the bare minimum? Are they possessive or protective of their things?
  • What are your character’s hobbies? What do they do during their off-time? Do they have anything that aids them in these hobbies or skills?
  • What does your character bring to the party? Are they a skilled fighter? Are they good with intelligent pursuits or charismatic encounters? 
  • How do they help set up camp? 
  • What are some other ways your party is obviously benefited by your character’s presence?
  • What is your character’s relationship with money? What are their spending habits? How would your party perceive their relationship with money / accepting pay from others?
  • What is your character’s overall disposition when surrounded only by the party? Are they different around just one or two party members? If so, are these specific members, or rather that your character is more comfortable opening up around fewer people?
  • Does your character walk at a faster or slower pace? Does it depend on the setting or situation?
  • How does your character pass travel time? 
  • Is there anything else that your party members might notice about your character?

There is no time for us beyond the time we have to look back upon There is no time for us to hammer out the mistakes we forged and straighten them until they vanish Our time was decided for us, by our actions and their powerful consequences, and I wish with all of my heart that our blind eyes could have seen the chains we were making for ourselves day after day But we remained blind, and blinded by a light that kept us ignorant of the shadows that had formed around us, we marched forward to a song that drowned out the calls of those who could see beyond the white-hot intensity we believed to be so strong.

When, really, it was frail and thin, just as we both were when we met. Just as we both were when we broke up. We believed so fiercely in a love that had been tainted and poisoned by everything besides love. Love did not reside in our light. Love had left us, rather, love had been kicked out and replaced by an imposter. Love had been ripped from the car and beaten on the side of the road and threatened by our creations. Of course, they did not act without commands, and their command centers were located directly in our hearts, bleak factories churning out toxic waste directly in the rivers of blood flowing through our bodies, poisoning our minds.

Love had become afraid of us, afraid of who we were becoming, afraid of what we were becoming, afraid of how far from what we once were that we had drifted. Love looked at our exhibit from behind glass.

Our time has died and my time is hollow. Time drifts slowly now, loveless and slowly, shuffling its feet in search of something lost.

Tearing myself away from you was harder than heroin. The withdrawals are worse than from any pill I can shove down my throat to try and forget the experience of you running through my veins. And when my hair is grey and my life begins to fail, and time clutches at life’s robes begging for another minute in this world, I will remember the feeling of young love beating in my heart, giving life to all actions, sweet and simple, before I pass.
