it's mildly annoying when people compare emoji to hieroglyphs. like I get where the misconception comes from, but it's still a little bit frustrating to see

egyptian hieroglyphs were not a system of pictograms, and this becomes readily apparent from looking at any substantial amount of text. some specific concepts had one-character ideographs to represent them, but most things would be spelled out phonetically (but with a similar-ish semantic character next to it to imply the general category that the word you're spelling belongs to)

Couldja explain more? I know very little of hieroglyphics, and you seem knowledgeable.

sure.

so as an example, the ancient egyptian word for "cat" was written like this:

or, using unicode characters your device may or may not display correctly, "𓏇𓇋𓅱𓃠". this was pronounced something like /mi(ʀ)juw/, transliterated as mjw (the similarity to "mew" is not a coincidence.)

this word consists of a sequence of four characters. the first three represent the three consonant sounds in the word, with the first character covering the first two consonants together. then the fourth character is a cat, because this word means "cat".

so, together, this word is spelled something like my-y-w-[cat]. there's both a phonetic component and a semantic component. it's very cool!

A pretty pony pal properly prepared for plundering perilous passageways! A new hero for an upcoming expansion to One Deck Dungeon from Asmadi Games.

I had a lot of fun designing her, this totally came about because the client saw my centaur gal Liliwyn and was like, “so wanna draw a centaur hero for us?” and I was like OF COURSE. I put a lot of that “big & friendly” energy into this gal too, but I like to think she’s also the mom friend – those saddlebags got snacks and water satchels to keep her fellow adventurers energized and hydrated!

living in america is like. one presidential candidate has done net zero. the other guy wants you personally to die. all his campaign ads are still shots of your address and his campaign tour is that he visits your friends and family's houses and knocks on their door while delivering a speech for 2 hours. there's a third guy running who says maybe presidential nominees shouldn't be allowed to advocate murder, but he's not backed by one of two 200-year-old-clubs, so he's going to lose. your aunt loves guy 2 and thinks you're anti-free speech because you don't want to hear out his policies on which way he is going to remove your head from your body. you are insulted by strangers whether you vote for guy 1 OR guy 3

@Fanfic writers:

My friend send me this link, is a series on a profile on Ao3 (tumblr) that has different tutorials to insert things to fanfics via html code, I thought I would share bc it’s really cool

Lists of tutorials:

This is a tutorial/live example on how to make large images fit on mobile browsers but remain normal size on desktop browsers.

This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic the look of letters, fliers, and stationery (as well as other forms of written media) without using images. For all your epistolary fic needs.

This is a tutorial/live example on how to create a "Choose Your Own Adventure" fic. While this has been explained before (see here), this particular tutorial shows you how to use a work skin to hide the next parts from the reader until they click through to get to them.

This is a live example of how an author can create linked footnotes in their work with only a little bit of HTML and no workskins required. This is best viewed by clicking "Entire Work". While I've included the actual coding in bold and italic once you click "Hide Creator's Style", there's a more detailed explanation here.

This a tutorial/live example on how to have text change or appear once a cursor is hovering over it. Helpful for pop-up spoilers, language translations, quick author's notes, etc.

Anonymous on tumblr: do you have a skin that would mimic the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons section from the end of a fic? the desired effect being that the fic could go on after the “end” of the fic, so after the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons

Here's a tutorial/live example to do just that, with some of the buttons actually functioning. I'll explain more inside!

This is a tutorial/live example on how to align images to the left or right of the screen and have text wrap around them.

This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic email windows on AO3 without the need to use images.

This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic iOS text messages on AO3 without the need to use images. There's also a chapter on how to have emojis displayed on AO3 as well.

Bored with the default page dividers? This is a tutorial/live example on how customize your page dividers with no images needed (though I do show you how you could use images if you wanted to do such a thing).

This is a live example how to make invisible text that can only be seen by highlighting the text. Tutorial is included in text, and you can always leave comments about questions you may have.

MOBILE USERS: Sadly, this probably won't work for you, since highlighting in a mobile browser is different than web. I've tried correcting this, but have yet to find a solution.

Original coding and design is from layouttest. I make no claims for it, just tweaked it so it will work on AO3.

This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of lined notebook paper in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.

This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of sticky notes (aka Post-Its) in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.

This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of Deadpool's thinking boxes in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.

This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of a newspaper article in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.

Okay, this is really useful. Especially the “how to make images fit” one.

when i was a freshman in college i wanted to dress up for halloween because i thought surely college students would have the spirit. so i elected to put a whole entire Skull Kid from legend of zelda majora’s mask cosplay together and wear that fucking ensemble to college on halloween.

i step on campus and realize immediately that not one other person is dressed up. not so much as a cat ear headband. so imagine this fucking dude sitting in a class of otherwise normally dressed people looking like this. that was me. this was my 9/11

I'm in Santa Fe so of course I went down to the picket line outside a local studio. George RR Martin was there too, and I got to see Paris, George's better half, as well. So was incredible author Nnedi Okorafor who had driven in from Arizona to be on the picket line.

George RR Martin is such a good supporter he's been on strike from writing his books for years.

Until the strike is over, anybody making this joke has to donate to the Entertainment Community Fund. I'm sorry. I don't make the rules.

My boyfriend made this joke yesterday. Today I saw this post and texted him a screenshot of it with the comment, "Neil Gaiman says your joke is bad and you should feel bad."

He texted back, "He said no such thing. He simply informed us of the rules." And then send a pic of his donation confirmation.

I had dinner with George tonight and informed him of the low-hanging joke and the rule. Your boyfriend is spot on.
