Listen, even if the MC and Asra need to deal with rent (which is a possibility in a scenario where the city “took” the shop + apartment when its only official owner died – well, or if in your version of MC’s backstory they didn’t own the place in the first place), it’s confirmed that the two make enough money to live comfortably, despite center city housing being pricey. It’s even been mentioned that the shop deals with some “very expensive” items:

And it’s clearly Asra providing most materials and whatnot to actually sell. Probably crafts some of the items, too, considering that Asra made the magic-infused card deck.

So basically the rent joke isn’t only insensitive given Asra’s origin, it also just makes no goddamn sense unless your MC single-handedly sabotages the shop.
