According to the 2007 book Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography, when Charles Schulz was drafted into WWII, his unit saw combat only once, near the end of the war. During that engagement, Schulz attempted to fire at a German soldier, only to realise that in the commotion he’d forgotten to load his rifle. The German, unaware of Schulz’ error, mistakenly concluded that Schulz was sparing him and promptly surrendered.

I suspect this explains a thing or two about Peanuts’ sense of humour.
