Random Things That Float Down The Cosmos

i work at an infant daycare and one of our babies right now is notorious for attacking the others. like she'll lock onto a target from the other side of the classroom and speed crawl over to them while breathing really heavily and then when she gets near them she'll either pull them over by their onesies, pull their hair, smack them, or hit them with toys. if you move her away from her victim she'll just chase them down again so we've started implementing "baby jail" where we stick her in a jumper whenever she attacks her classmates. we have a couple of babies now that will straight up start wailing if she gets near them because she's smacked them around so many times. also this isn't entirely relevant to the original post but we call her typhoid mary because her mom keeps bringing her in when she's sick, hence this message i sent to my coworkers a while back

Pavitr: Do ever think abt the pull Gwen and Miles have on each other? Cuz Miles was abt to change career so he could study interdimensional travel and I'm pretty sure Gwen was secretly plotting to overthrow you so she could see Miles whenever the fuck she wants

Miguel: Pav...what the fuck are you talking about

Proposal for a truly adversarial tabletop RPG:

  • The numeric values of the traits on your character sheet are pre-filled, if applicable but the actual names of your traits are not: they're left blank, indicating only what part of speech – noun, verb or adjective – should occupy that slot.
  • The game includes 20–30 different character sheet designs, each of which has a different assortment of open slots, presented in a different order and layout, so what kind of slot is being filled can't be predicted from its part of speech unless you know which sheet someone is holding. The slots on each sheet are numbered.
  • Character creation begins with each player drawing a random character sheet design; the group then goes around the table taking turns calling out the part(s) of speech of their character sheet's lowest-numbered empty slot. Each other player calls out a word satisfying those criteria, and the active player must choose one of them to write down in that slot.
  • Attempt to play the resulting characters.

A basic mockup of a character sheet might look like this (though in practice they should be much more needlessly complicated):

Information

Species: (1) ________ [noun] Profession: (2–3) ________ ________ [noun + verb ending in -er] Alignment: (4) ________ [adjective]

Skills

(5) ________ [verb] Rating: 4 (6) ________ [verb] Rating: 3 (7) ________ [verb] Rating: 2 (8) ________ [verb] Rating: 1

Known Spells

(9–10) ________ ________ [verb ending in -ing + noun] (11–12) ________ of ________ [noun + verb ending in -ing] (13–14) ________ ________ [adjective + noun]

Serperior Facts

Jessie doesn't nerd out often but when she does, it's about snakes or fashion. After she released Arbok and sent Seviper to HQ, I feel like she missed them so much she just got deep into ophiology

hey writers if you want to make a metaphor for racism, please maybe remember that racism is literally based on nothing. Africans weren’t enslaved en masse because the Robo-Musa threatened to destroy the world, they were enslaved because it was economically rewarding and politically convenient. If at any point your allegory for racism includes “so <oppressed group> did this major catastrophe and” then you have not only missed the point but you are literally reinforcing the ideas that racism have let racism self-perpetuate (that e.g. black people are naturally dangerous and violent and must be contained or begrudgingly accepted by the Nice White People)

Good for this person. This is exactly what you do. Screw the job.

I had a job that made me work an all nighter, 30 hours straight, over Thanksgiving. I resigned that Monday and it was one of the most satisfying decisions I’ve ever made.

Please pay attention to all the manipulation tactics this boss uses, because they’re pulling out every trick in the book.

  • “I’m not your boss, I’m your friend”
  • “Other people will be hurt by this and it’s your fault and I’m going to tell them all that”
  • Mocking language
  • Jobs are important too
  • “Be a team player”
  • “We’re your family too”
  • Talking as if this is a thing you must do
  • “We all make sacrifices”
  • Undermining your authority
  • “You caused all of this, really”
  • Accusing you of being “unprofessional”
  • “Look at the money you cost us”
  • “Just laugh it off and come back to work”

This is like a 101 course in how employers use guilt trips to coerce you into putting up with their bullshit. This is precisely why you should never trust those employers who insist that they’re “like a family.” They are not. It’s just a ruse so that your boss can neg you into putting your job ahead of your actual life.
