The corollary to "make bad art" is "let other people make bad art." And I mean individuals, not Marvel or Disney or whoever thinks they own stories nowadays. I mean, if you see a poem on the Internet and you think it is THE WORST CRINGE OF ALL TIME... just leave it. If some teen has written a Wattpad book you really hate, let it go. If you see a chain going around with everybody crapping on the same random artist they don't like online, don't reblog it. Ask yourself every time you're making fun of "bad art:" 1) is this really such a big deal? 2) is this in line with my ideals of allowing people to enjoy themselves making art which may not be "objectively" or "technically" sound? 3) am I making a positive impact by sharing this?

It's so difficult already to feel comfortable making and posting your own work online; just because someone's art is "cringey" or "boring" or whatever doesn't necessarily merit an online hate campaign. Please try to remember that the vast majority of people who "blow up" for this kind of stuff are the exact people we're trying to encourage: someone with an idea, and the confidence to execute it without worrying about being the best artist of all time. Especially when we're talking about teens, we have to let people make bad art. That's the only way we can do it ourselves.

Ok, so this is a callout post for EstablishedTitles.com

As a Scottish person, I need to say this:

ESTABLISHED TITLES IS A SCAM!

You cannot become a Lord/Lady in Scotland by owning land of any size. The title of Lord or Lady are titles of Peers in the House of Lords, who are members of the House of Lords, the Upper House of the British Parliament. You get a peerage by donating a fucktonne of money to the Tory party being appointed as such by the British Government, not by owning Land in Scotland. If owning land was enough to get you a peerage, my parents would be Lord and Lady Stabbii. They are not. In fact my Dad is banned from any official honours.

There are better ways to support tree planting, rewilding or natural landscape projects in Scotland, namely by donating to either the National Trust for Scotland or the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Both of these charities are trusted, well established and reliable charities that carry out rewilding, tree planting and nature conservation all over Scotland. If you want a cool title, make one yourself.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Op please you can't just breeze right over that bit about your dad you have to explain further

Okay so the Long and short of it was when my dad was a civil servant he walked out with the Nurses on a wildcat strike. He didn't even work for the NHS, he just walked out in solidarity with them and he got told that as punishment he could not get any official honours.

For people with anxiety about filing taxes, here’s what things that happen when you make a mistake on your tax return:

- it gets corrected

- you get a letter in the mail either asking for some additional information or a letter showing the adjustment

- you pay the amount (there’s options for payment plans too!) or get a refund

Things that do not happen

- you’re “in trouble”

- you are charged with fraud

- you go to jail

I know that most people are probably just joking/exaggerating when they say a mistake on their return means they get thrown in jail but when I worked with the public I always would encounter people who believed that would happen and they would be panicking about it. So I like to put this out there every year because if I can even prevent one person from feeling that way, it’s worth it

Annual reblog of this important information.

The thingy above where you sign your tax form says that you’ve filled it out to the best of your ability.  “Sir, I am a dumbass” is 100% a valid defense

It’s so fucked up how tiktok culture has made clout-poisoned people turn the public into content, every day I see people minding their business have their entire faces put online for thousands of likes, a couple kissing on the train, a lady dancing across a cross walk, a guy nodding his head to the music at a club, a lady buying a banana at the store, ring camera footage of the neighbors kids being stupid. Just let people live jfc

Avatar

I think I may have made it seem like this is about wholesome content (which my sentiment towards that is the same) but most of the time when I see this stuff people are being ridiculed for being completely normal. And I didn’t make up any of these examples btw, I couldn’t find the dance one but only because there are too many videos of people being recorded at cross walks

(Faces censored and additional text added by me)

Im gonna add this to every post about this i see im never gonna shut up about it. This will get people killed. This will ruin lives. More people live in hiding than you think. So many people are one post away from having to abandon their whole lives. Dont ever post anything of anyone without their consent, stranger or not.

ok I get that this is a joke but I would like to point out that Magnum P.I. was not copaganda. Magnum is a private investigator who frequently works against the local police. There was even an episode where he investigated the rape and murder of a woman by a cop who was being protected by his colleagues and the system (the same episode dealt with how cops' primary function is enforcing a system under which mentally ill people are designed to suffer because they frame a homeless vet with severe PTSD for the crime).

There is a recurring character, Lt. Tanaka, who is part of the police force and who Magnum sometimes gets important information and access from, but his characterisation as someone who is easily bribed is not exactly a favourable portrayal of the police either.

Magnum P.I. definitely has its flaws and maybe isn't exactly radical by today's standards, it's not like every episode exposes the corrupt and violent police force or anything like that, but it was definitely not a classic case of copaganda. And as someone who watches a lot of crime shows, I even perceived it as refreshing and unusual because it was very openly critical of institutions like the military and the police.

SO I decided to experiment with blocking someone from an anon ask they've sent to see what happens (thank you to @monjustmon for being my co-scientist on this), and here are the results from our study:

  1. When you block an anon, the username does NOT appear in your blocklist
  2. If you go to the page of the person you've anon blocked, you can still see their page, and it does not look like you have blocked them. In fact, you can still hit the "block" button on their page.
  3. Tumblr will not inform the user that they are blocked from sending you anons. Mon was able to keep sending me anons, but I was not receiving them in my inbox
  4. Blocking an anon removes the anon from your inbox as well as any previous anons still sitting in there that the user sent you
  5. Blocking an anon appears to block the ip address, as mon was unable to send me anons from a side account
  6. Because blocking the anon does not block the blog it originated from, there does not seem to be a way to unblock :( sorry mon
  7. Blocking an anon sent from your own ip address does nothing. I initially tried making a side account for the purpose of conducting this experiment, but blocking the anon did nothing to prevent the side account from sending another, which I assume is because we share an ip address. So if you have an annoying sibling who keeps sending you anons, sorry, you're out of luck.

So there you have it folks, the details of what happens when you block an anon xD

Edit: apparently not everyone has timestamps enabled lol so for all of you, this experiment was done on January 6th 2023

and it's a little spooky to be typing 2023 instead of 2022

Additional finding: the person blocked on anon can still send you regular asks!

OP, what if you try blocking Mon’s account then unblocking? Does that also kick loose the block done as an anon?

One of my favourite hcs I like from the Tolkein fandom is when the dwarves would insist that Bilbo is, in fact, a prince. A lord, at the very least. That is taking into account that they’re comparing with Middle Earth’s standards of who rules what in a country, and Bilbo Baggins of Bag End of Underhill, grandson of ‘Old Took’ Thain —who is essentially a chief hobbits would seek counsel from— is (the dwarves can’t stress this enough) in some matter, a prince. Which also means Bilbo’s more or less a royalty of the hobbits.

Thorin, very interested in this but would rather have Smaug burn off what’s left of his beard than admit it: Oh?

Bilbo tries to wave it off by saying the hobbits don’t have the same kind of monarchy most species would have (i.e. men and dwarves), and that their ways are much simpler in that sense. Sure, they have a council, and the Thain would usually elect his heir to take over, but that’s just how leadership is, lads, honestly, there’s no fuss of royalty, or whatsover in the Shire.

Fíli: Bilbo, you own several lands. All of which had been passed down in your family name

Bilbo: Well, that’s because I’m a landlord, and those lands once belonged to my father, so I can’t possibly abandon them—

Kíli: You’re also a grandson to the Thain, who is, might I remind you, a leader of your people, and is someone respected the hobbits would look up to when making decisions for the best of internal or external matters

Bilbo: Well, yes, I know that—

Fíli: We heard you’re also richer and have the best and fanciest smial out of everyone else here. You’re also someone people have considered in high regard, from the look of things

Bilbo: Ye—

Both of them: So, you’re royalty!

Anytime one of the company dares to address him as ‘Your Highness’ or anything just as redundant, Bilbo threatens to U-turn back and abandon them to Smaug. Absolutely none of that nonsense, thank you very much, and good evening.

Dwalin, muttering to Balin: He has the royal audacity down to pat

Bilbo squawks and Thorin, who Dwalin had been looking at while he put out that insult, only glowers at him from under his broody slouch.

So let me get this straight

1. Elon Musk buys Twitter

2. Elon Musk unbans Andrew Tate

3. Andrew Tate picks a fight with Greta Thunberg

4. Greta Thunberg ratios the shit out him

5. He gets mad and posts a video response

6. There's a Romanian pizza box in the video which twigs Romanian police of his location

7. He is raided and arrested for human trafficking

That is some fabulous fuck-around-find-out shit and a great end to the year.

Reminder that, as far as I’ve been able to track down (and I’ve been looking), there has never been a lawsuit over free fanfiction.

There’ve been a lot of C&D orders, plus the Chelsea Quinn Yarbro legal settlement (which didn’t involve going to court; the lawyer demanded stuff and the fans caved because they didn’t think they could fight it). There are takedown notices. There are a lot of archive website, and web host platforms, that decline to host content that an author/publisher claims is infringing.

But none of that has been found guilty of copyright infringement in court. Nobody’s sued a fanfic writer for copyright infringement. Not even Disney.

And the OTW knows that. Knows exactly what legal stance they’re taking when they refuse to disallow fic because an author doesn’t like it. Knows what the copyright cases for profit-based works have been - Suntrust v. Houghton MifflinCampbell v. Acuff-Rose, others… they know that, when you combine the concept of parody (the legal term, not the casual meaning of “funny mockery”) and the utter lack of profit, a copyright holder’s case would be very thin indeed.

A Harry/Draco story runs solidly into the legal issues of Suntrust: this is a story the original author would never write, appealing to readers who aren’t reading it instead of Rowling’s works (because if you don’t know Rowling’s works, you may not understand the characters), with fictional elements that comment on the gaps and world structure of the original. RPF is even more protected - Hustler v. Fallwell had a SCOTUS ruling that incest porn about Fallwell was protected speech since Falwell was a public figure and the parody could not have been reasonably considered believable.

“Next episode in the series” fanfic might be infringing; “Avengers Orgy Tower OT8″ is better protected. “My date with the lead singer” might be infringing (on publicity rights, not copyright) but “the band is actually werewolves and I’m the alpha female who bonded with all of them” is implausible enough to be free speech.

Rice (and the other takedown authors) managed to stifle fic about their works through bullying intimidation tactics, not a solid legal foundation. They counted on fic authors and website hosts not being copyright law experts, AND not having the money to challenge a suit if one is filed, even if there’s no way it could win against any kind of defense.

Part of why the OTW was created, was to end those tactics. To say to authors, publishers, production companies: If you think fanfic is actually illegal, bring on your lawyers and let’s get a court to actually make a ruling.

10+ years, and not a damn one of them has made a move.

You think Disney doesn’t know Star Wars fic exists? You think Warner Brothers is happy with Snarry novels? Think Viacom hasn’t noticed Star Trek fanzines? Think Diana Gabaldon, George RR Martin, and Orson Scott Card are unaware that AO3 hosts fic based on their works?

And yet. No lawsuits.

Disney’s done takedown notices over the Baby Yoda gifs… but nothing about the fanfic at AO3.

D’you think Abrams is happy with all the FinnPoe fic and memes? That he wouldn’t shut it down if he had any legal way to make it stop?

We’re on solid ground at AO3. We just needed a host that wouldn’t cave to the pressure of “[author] doesn’t approve of fanfic; remove it or else.”

OTW says: Or else what?

THIS. This is why I will always be a flag waving supporter of with AO3. I never want to wake up to a casually devestating message like THIS again

Hi new Tumblr users

Please know this sites hashtagging system is categorical and NOT clout based

Aka if I look up the “Wendell and Wild” tag, I should find clips, media, art and posts related to Wendell and wild ONLY. Same with any other random tag searched

If I spy a selfie, a random neighborhood, or any other kind of “insta” post trying to take likes for a popular hashtag, I’m reporting you for spam. Most other long term users will too and your acct will be fast tracked as a spam blogger and blocked.

You will not ruin the last non corporate site for us, especially by trying to treat this site like influencers matter. If you get popular, it’s bc you’re a clown w a skill not bc your hot or rich or skinny, got it?

i hope the barbie movie is a cultural phenomenon. i hope it leaves the next christopher nolan film in the dust. i hope it changes modern cinema forever and all movies made after it is influenced by it in some way. i hope the most academic, in-depth essays are written about it. i hope it's studied in film classes. i hope it remains in the human psyche for generations

And... they invited tumblr to speak. I can't describe how much joy this moment brought me and how fucking proud made me of being part of our little entropy generator here:

Bringing my menorah quilt to the party.

First image (description by @capricorn-0mnikorn):

A social media post from John Harris, time stamped “Yesterday at 4:11 PM”: May the light we kindle be somewhat silly this year” featuring a picture of a house with a homemade yard display of a menorah in the front yard.

Each of the “candles” is actually one of those inflatable dancing tube men. The “shamash candle” tube man is bright yellow, and all the others alternate between blue and white. In the photo, only the “Shamash” and first “candle” (blue) are inflated and dancing. All others are still deflated.

The photo was taken around sunset, and there are three outdoor yard lights pointing at the menorah display.

Second image: nine different smart phones lined up on a tabletop, with the one in the center higher than the rest. The middle phone and the first phone on the right each have the image of a candle flame on the screen. The other seven screens are black.

Third image: a quilt on the floor in front of the quilter’s feet. The quilt has the shape of a menorah in yellow cloth of many different patterns against a background of cloth in many different patterns and shades of blue. Each candle shape has a red and yellow flame above it.
