Ways to Live in Direct Opposition to Capitalism

I am by no means an expert in any of these things I’m gonna talk about, so keep that in mind! I am just making a compilation of things I know of that we can do to lessen the stranglehold the capitalist lifestyle has on us while enriching our lives, our surroundings, and the lives of others. Please add anything I miss or correct anything I may be getting wrong! Anyway here goes!

  • Use what you have, fix what’s you can, make what you can, accept from others, thrift what you can, and finally purchase as a last resort.
  • This is advice I have seen float around here a couple of times that can apply to a lot of things including clothing, furniture, food, and more besides. It’s meant to be done roughly in that order as it applies to what you’re wanting/needing/doing. It’s about preventing waste, promoting self-capability, having a heightened reliance on your community, and consciously rejecting the ingrained habit many of us have to just purchase things or services.
  • Here’s where you can read about growing an indoor garden!
  • Here’s where you can read about sewing things yourself!
  • Here’s an online site for giving and receiving items for free!
  • Here is where you can find a local Mutual Aid to get things from, learn skills from, give do, volunteer for, etc. (in the U.S.)
  • Be politically active! (from a U.S. perspective)
  • Vote for every election. Know your representatives and those who will be competing in the next election. Vote without ignorance and without falling for unfounded claims. While operating within the system that actively oppresses us will not bring about the future we want, it can serve as damage control (preventing worse candidates from taking office) and it can potentially create a national atmosphere more open to change.
  • Here’s a good article about getting more involved in the U.S. political process.
  • Here’s a site that will show you how to register to vote, when and where elections are held, and more!
  • Here’s good advice on finding protests in your city!
  • Here’s some readings on unionizing! It’s your legal right to unionize!
  • Here’s a more user friendly site for learning about unions!
  • Be active within your community!
  • Developing strong, motivated, capable, knowledgeable, and inclusive communities is the ultimate way to combat the relentless and bleak present and future. When you’ve worked on the things above and have gotten good at it (or even if you haven’t gotten good at it yet), start spreading what you know and what you can do with others!
  • Give your neighbors, coworkers, and friends some of the vegetables you’ve grown.
  • Invite your community members to volunteer events.
  • Talk to folks about how to vote, when you’re doing it, etc.
  • Take part in Mutual Aids to teach what you’ve learned or whatever you may be an expert in! Invite neighbors, friends, and coworkers when you take part in the Mutual Aid!
  • Accept your community. Take them for who and what they are. Discrimination is the enemy of cooperation. You have much more in common with everyone in your community than a single billionaire or corporation. We’re all passengers on this spaceship earth.
  • Do it one step at a time!
  • Obviously we can’t do all of these things at once. Do what you can when you can, and you’ll start to notice real change in your life!
  • Our online communities where we talk about our visions and hopes are fantastic, but they have little impact if we don’t actually get up and do the real work that change requires.
  • Want to be better, and keep hope for the future!
  • Harbor and nourish that desire to be a better person and to be the change you want to see in the world. You need to be hungry for a better future if you plan to make it through the rough times when everything feels pointless and without hope. Reach out to others when you’re down, and be someone others can lean on when their lives get hard.

That’s it! Please interact with this, spread it to others, and add your own thoughts and ideas! It’s important that we do the real work to get the change we crave!

here’s a secret i don’t wany my players to know about our tabletop game - sometimes i plan puzzles/scenarios that don’t actually have a fixed solution, and instead will be solved when i think they’ve come up with a cool solution

like obviously you can’t do that if you’re setting a riddle or something, but i just remember one time they were in a shapeshifter duel. they needed to pass through to the next room by duelling a magical being that could change into different things by saying ‘i am a [whatever]’. the party was also given the power to do this

so, for instance, if she said ‘i am a fish’, they could say ‘i am a fisherman’, and she could counter that with 'i am a sword’, going back and forth with different bodies that can beat each other in a fight

i didn’t have an endgame here. i was just going to say they won when they’d gone long enough to impress her, or lost if they can’t think of anything. that was the scenario, as written

but in the course of the scene, my players 'figured out’ that they had to make her say 'i am a door’, because that was what they were looking for, and started to chain together an impressive string of responses that ultimately led them there. and i started to encourage that, because that’s smart as hell! way better than what i had planned

and that’s what i mean - as a dm, give your players space to figure things out and change the scene in ways you hadn’t anticipated. it’s fun!

They are not as high-profile as the WGA, but I would like to bring everyone's attention to the imminent strike action by thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles. They are set to go on strike tomorrow, July 1st, 2023.

More than 15,000 hotel workers are seeking higher pay, better benefits, and working conditions. This includes an across-the-board $5 an hour raise, as well as affordable healthcare and better pensions. They also are seeking a ban on the use of E-Verify, which is used to deny employment to undocumented workers and workers involved with the criminal justice system. You can follow what is happening at their Twitter.

So here's my Easter post about why my Jewish ass thinks the name of Jesus is funny

So Jesus and the apostles and everyone else were semitic. They spoke Hebrew and Aramaic. So Jesus's original Hebrew name is Yeshua.

In the western canon, the names of Jesus's apostles and many others were Hellenized (i.e., translated to Ancient Greek) and then Anglicized (translated to English).

So the disciple John was originally known as Yochanan in Hebrew. This was Hellenized to Ioannes, then Anglicized to John.

For more examples:

Hebrew > Hellenized > Anglicized

  • Myriam > Maria > Mary
  • Mattiyahu > Matthios > Matthew

This process of translation happens with many biblical names, particularly New Testament.

Except for Jesus Himself.

Jesus's name is only Hellenized. Yeshua to Jesus. Then in the Western canon, it stops there. Why?

I posit a simple answer: it would sound weird if Jesus's name were Anglicized.

Josh turned water into wine.

Josh died for your sins.

Josh will come again to judge the living and the dead.

see more and more “entire life told/thought i high function but actually am just very high support need” (autism context) and get more and more annoy at that

everytime see everytime click into page and everytime realize by “very high support” (yes see multiple include the “very”) they mean comorbid anxiety depression cptsd trouble make friends because people think “weird” bullied lose speech need remind shower need remind things (but able do and if no remind after a while will do) trouble school trouble job etc am forget.

and all that hard struggle yes no deny. deserve all the help and am not say it easy.

but it not “very high support need.” not even “high support need.” have higher need than what nondisabled neurotypical society expect you to is not “high support need.” yes, know many people do this because want validate self and past and trauma. but. not need be high support to be valid or to receive support. not need be high support for past trauma & past neglect & past not get support to be valid.

and. it water down definition of “high support need.” kick actual high support need out. us who extra vulnerable because need physical help most or all bADLs. need constant 24/7 supervision to be alive to not accidental harm self or die. need medical services for stuff people (include these people) take for granted, like just be able communicate, walk (yes many high support need autistic people struggle with that even without specific physical disability dx), feeding, etc. no awareness of self or other people or surroundings or danger. need 24/7 behavioral support. experience explosive emotions that even terrify self self no understand and cannot control behavior so destructive. many very high support, if not get support they literally die. not exaggerate. that how high of support they need.

(and even debate about whether should write this list. because. unless you high support yourself or experience these same amount yourself or close to someone who is or give care for them, very high chance you not get degree of symptom am talk about. plenty autistic struggle emotional regulation, for example. some struggle with severe intense lose control explosive behavior, include some level 1s. but unless you experience it self or read lot lot lot lot about & by people who do, found that average person include average autism community person not know what am mean by explosive emotion.)

it not “gatekeeping” or “call fake.” it me get frustrate at people misuse medical term that used describe extremely vulnerable population, who rely on other people to keep basic alive, many us have trouble or have limited language communication or have none at all, we need keep medical term describe us because many us cannot explain cannot list you our support need, either because long or private or make us feel awful or literal no communication/intellectual ability.

by validate self you harming us. “well it just one person identify themself not affect you [eye roll].” no, not just one person. but even if just one person, people around them see, and think, oh, that high support need, that very high support need, am educated. and that spread. and actual high support need people like am describe are ignored people don’t think they exist.

please. talk about own experience. no matter “there people more struggle than me.” am not say cannot. am not say “look at these actual struggles yours mild shut up.” it autism spectrum, there spectrum of experience. there more than “no support need” vs “high support need.” there things in middle. even low support need—that just mean low compare to other autistics. not “your support need your trauma not important.”

but please. remember us. leave our terms alone.
