In the last five years this Government has tried to restrict more and more people’s right to legal assistance - Richard Burgon
Richard Burgon MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Government plans to restrict access to UK courts, said:
“I welcome The Supreme Court’s decision that the ‘residence test’ is unlawful. No one who might have suffered an injustice should be prevented from accessing our courts on the grounds of where they are from or how long they have lived here.
“It is a fundamental principle of our justice system that all are equal before the law. In the last five years this Government has tried to restrict more and more people’s right to legal assistance. Only a Labour Government will ensure proper access to justice for all those who need it.”
I’m sure that new PM Theresa May will live up to her words today and help all people access services equally.
