well, labour won the election! hooray!

look, i know labour is far from ideal, but what is important is that they're not the tories. we have shown every party that if you fuck around, you find out. that no seat is safe. this will hopefully have shown labour that they need to listen to the people if they want to keep their majority in the next election.

so, take today, maybe a few days, to celebrate, to breathe a sigh of relief, to laugh at the tories. and then get to work. no matter what party your constituency is a part of, email your MP about issues that matter to you, sign petitions, and call the government out if you see them breaking promises. don't get complacent. but don't lose hope either. the biggest hurdle has been cleared.

there needs to be so much more legislation when it comes to advertising, especially mobile adverts which are 99% lies and often predatory.

my suggestions:

-adverts cannot lie about the product they are advertising

-adverts cannot trick you into clicking them (eg. false X's to close the ad)

-adverts cannot pretend to be the app you are currently playing and say "you need to update the app!"

-adverts cannot, under any circumstance, have strobing lights

-adverts cannot bully or belittle the viewer (genuinely why is this one a thing ads do)

-advertising gambling should be illegal

-advertising addictive products should be illegal

-no hate speech of any kind

-no attempting to convert the viewer to any religion

-ADVERTS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FORCE OPEN THE APP STORE ON ANY DEVICE

I'd also add to the "false x" point above -- the ad must be easy to close/dismiss. None of these too small a set of pixels to accurate tap with a finger thing.

Once closed, an ad cannot return nor can it be replaced with a new ad.

Once you hit the x it should immediately close the ad instead of taking you to another stage of the ad that you will not be able to close for a certain amount of time

"- I have a lot of problems with Biden. He is clearly the better of the two options, which I recognize is a very low bar. Being better than Trump cannot be the standard, because Donald Trump is the absence of a standard.

"But the truth is, even if Trump looses, that won't be the end of this. The people who cooked up Project 2025 will just move onto Project 2029 instead, because for them, this is so much more than just one election, or indeed, one candidate. Project 2025 is born from impulse as old as America. It's an impulse that says one class of Americans is entitled to lead, and the rest of us are lucky to be allowed to serve- that thinks there should be a limited government when it comes to rules they have to live by, but also a unitary executive to keep the rest of us in line. These are old, old ideas that have been shouted from podiums-... but have now been placed into a new handbook for an only too willing president to use on day one.

"And in a perfect world, I would love if we had an opposing party better able to articulate a strong defense of our country's ideals and that also consistently lived up to them. People are entitled to hope for more from the next four years than someone just not being Trump (and for at least two supreme court justices to die)-...

"And for anyone tempted to think, 'Well, we survived Trump's first term,' first, not everyone did, and it should hopefully be very clear by now a second Trump term really does promise to be far, far worse, because if Trump's first term was defined by chaos, his second could be defined by ruthless efficiency. That should be troubling to absolutely everyone because Project 2025 is a movement who's members joke about wanting a white homeland and insist women have to have more babies to uphold western society.-

"We need to be better than this."

And for anyone tempted to think, "We survived Trump’s first termā€ let me expand on Oliver's point by reminding everyone that over 3 million Americans died of Covid after Trump gutted Obama’s pandemic preparedness systems.

Let me also add that the new pandemic preparedness systems that were instituted once Biden took office managed to stop monkeypox in its tracks, before it had a chance to evolve into a more highly contagious form. At the time of the outbreak we were afraid of having another full blown pandemic, but due to the actions that were taken, less than 100 people died of it, and people have now forgotten it was ever a threat to public health.

Democrats finally hold an FCC majority in the final year of President Biden’s first term.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC)Ā plansĀ to vote to restore net neutrality later this month. With Democrats finally holding an FCC majority in the final year of President Biden’s first term, the agency can fulfillĀ a 2021 executive orderĀ from the President and bring back theĀ Obama-era rulesĀ that the Trump administration’s FCCĀ gutted in 2017.

The FCC plans to hold the vote during a meeting on April 25.Ā Net neutrality treats broadband services as an essential resourceĀ under Title II of the Communications Act, giving the FCC greater authority to regulate the industry. It lets the agency prevent ISPs from anti-consumer behavior like unfair pricing, blocking or throttling content and providing pay-to-play ā€œfast lanesā€ to internet access.

Democrats had to wait three years to enact Biden’s 2021 executive order to reinstate the net neutrality rules passed in 2015 by President Obama’s FCC. The confirmation process of Biden FCC nominee Gigi Sohn for telecommunications regulator played no small part. SheĀ withdrewĀ her nomination in March 2023 following what she called ā€œunrelenting, dishonest and cruel attacks.ā€

Every single time a Republican gets elected President, it takes literal years to undo the damage. And then people complain the Democrats "aren't doing enough." Well maybe if they didn't have to spend three years of every four years in the White House undoing the CRAP their Republican predecessor did, they could get more stuff done!

The UK is about to kick out the Tories after 14 years of austerity, corruption, incompetence, destructive and deliberate sadism. Sir Keir Starmer is an uncharismatic establishment government lawyer who is on the right of the Labour Party.

He is miles better than any Tory and will actually attempt to fix the problems facing the UK and it’s population, making the perfect the enemy of the good and refusing to vote unless you get the perfect is how right wingers win so often.

Predictions for seats in Parliament in the UK election

Although it's almost universally assumed that the Conservative Party will lose bigtime in the general election, the forecasts for number of seats in the House of Commons are more varied than one would expect. Survation predicts 470 seats for Labour while Britain Elects (at The New Statesman) predicts a mere 418 seats for them.

So I created this chart to compare predictions from five sources. In the right column are the number of seats for each party at end of the previous Parliament in May. If the image below is too small, try this direct link.

Sources...

326 seats out of the total 650 are needed for a majority. The numbers in the Nowcast prediction add up to just 649 because they aren't counting the Speaker who does not vote.

Polls close at 10:00 PM BST which is 2100 GMT. To determine when that is in your local time, click here.

According to this election night timeline at The Guardian, results from the 650 constituencies will start flooding in around 3:00 AM BST. Though some interesting results may be announced as early as a couple of hours before then.

Some constituencies which I'll be paying particular attention to tonight...

  • Richmond and Northallerton – Rishi Sunak's seat. The odds are (slightly) that he will keep his seat though it's far from certain. One of his challengers is a candidate who goes by the name Count Binface.
  • Godalming and Ash – Jeremy Hunt, the Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer, who is said to be in serious danger of losing his seat.
  • Chingford and Woodford Green - Iain Duncan Smith, leader of the Conservative Party for a few years in the 2000s.
  • North East Somerset and Hanham – Jacob Rees-Mogg, a particularly annoying Tory grandee who would be lucky to get voted back to the House.
  • South West Norfolk – Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak's immediate predecessor whose time in Number 10 was famously outlasted by a head of lettuce.
  • Clacton – Nigel Farage, head of the far right Reform Party and infamous Brexit fanatic. Because Farage seems to be leading there, Clacton may be the only constituency where it's possible to justify voting Tory — just to block him.
  • Holborn and St Pancras – Sir Keir Starmer, the next Labour prime minister. Should be an easy win for him there.
  • Kingston and Surbiton – Sir Ed Davey, head of the Liberal Democrats. If the Lib Dems have a particularly good evening then it's within the realm of possibility that they could replace the Conservatives as the official opposition.

So why should you take an interest in this election? If you're reading posts in this blog then you are likely a political nerd. Also, UK elections are interesting and fun. Monty Python devoted several sketches to UK election scenarios.

But frankly, unless Putin is overthrown in a coup or a major hurricane strikes Mar-a-Lago, this will be the best political news of the month. So savor every minute of coverage of it.

There should be live coverage at the BBC here. ITV News and other reputable UK news providers may also offer live coverage. One source to avoid is GB News which is roughly the Fox News of the UK. *shudders*

struggling with how to word this, but putting it out there anyway:

i can fully understand the posts on here from a lot of americans being tired of ā€œvote blue no matter whoā€ posts when the #1 thing that people are constantly (and sometimes only?) addressing is how the republican party is going treat trans/queer people if elected.

it’s part of an unfortunate pattern of prioritizing the effects on a demographic that includes white + upper class people, when people of color and those in the global south are actively and currently being killed or relegated to circumstances in which their survival is very unlikely

it is genuinely exhausting to witness this, and i was also on the fence about even participating in voting because i a) felt like it didn’t matter and b) every time i voiced being frustrated with the current state of the country, white queer people would immediately step in with ā€œbut what about trans people!ā€ -> (i am mixed race trans man)

and i say this with unending patience toward people who do this, because i know that it’s not something they actively think about. but everyone already knows how the republican party is going to treat queer people. you are probably talking to another queer person when you bring up project 2025. the issue is that, for those of us who aren’t white, or for those of us who are but who are conscious of ongoing struggles for people of color worldwide, the safety of people around the world feels more urgent than our own. that is the calculation that’s being made.

you’re not going to win votes for the democratic party by dismissing or minimizing these realities and by continually centering (white) queer people.

very few people on here and twitter are actually talking about issues beyond queer rights that concern people of color, or how the two administrations differ on these issues instead of constantly circling back to single-issue politics. this isn’t an exhaustive list. but these are the issues that have actually altered my perspective and motivated me to the point of committing to casting a vote

i may circle back to this and add more as it comes up, but i’m hoping that those who are skeptical / discouraged / tired of the white queer-centric discourse on tumblr and twitter can at least process some of this. please feel free to add more articles + points but i’m asking for the sake of this post to please focus on issues that affect people of color.

As someone who works in immigration, The whole system is fucked. However, Biden has done a lot to make it easier. Here are some highlights:

- Work permits for asylum seekers. Trump did not allow asylum seekers to work above board, forcing them into cash paying, near slavery jobs. Biden has made work permits relatively quick and easy to get. Also, even though they aren’t cheap, ($520 each) his admin has waived fees for many categories including initial asylum seekers and Violence Against Women Act seekers. Also, anyone with a work permit that was renewed this year will have it for 5 years, enough that if trump fucks the process for everyone people can at least still make a living.

- Prosecutorial discretion. Under Trump, if you didn’t have a path to citizenship and you had immigration court, you were finished. Biden has essentially paused proceedings for hundreds of thousands of people who don’t have a case now, but might in the future, giving them time to work, marry, have children, and potentially open new doors for themselves.

- The one that made the news: Parole in place. To immigrate legally, you have to enter the country legally except under very narrow circumstances. If you crossed the border and don’t win in court, you currently have to apply for a hard to get waiver with a 4 year waiting list to leave and come back legally. Biden is trying to waive this by expanding the options for people who crossed the border and married citizens to eliminate the waiver process.

These changes could be gone as soon as january 25th 2025 if Biden loses, as the new administration will replace the whole administration with political appointees frothing at the mouth to send people back regardless of their personal circumstances.

Sure, immigrating to the US isn’t what everyone wants. I dream of a future with truly open borders where nobody would have to do any of the things I do for them. Right now though, Biden will make things better, even if only to a point. Trump will make them much worse.

Also poor disabled people.

Recipients of SSI are - by definition - not ā€œupper classā€ because you can’t have more than $2000 at any give time. Half of SSI recipients aren’t white. (People of Color are also more likely to have jobs where they’re injured or working in dangerous conditions, and have also been disproportionately impacted by COVID.)

  • The Biden Administration removed the In-Kind Support and Maintenance Rule as it applies to food. This means that - as of September 30th, at least - you won’t be at risk of losing your benefits if someone shares food with you. Previously, if your parents bought you groceries or your friend cooked for you, you could have your benefits reduced by up to 1/3.
  • The Biden Administration is also removing some of the obsolete jobs that are used to deny people disability benefits. Applying for disability benefits involves the government telling you ā€œWell these are jobs you could do with your disabilitiesā€ - and the list of jobs was established in the 1970s and hasn’t really been updated, and a lot of the jobs don’t really exist in the US anymore. So you can be told ā€œSure, you’re too disabled to stand, but you could be a Linen Grader, so you’re not Disabled Enough that you can’t work.ā€ - even though that’s not really a job that exists in the US anymore. Under Biden, the SSA is removing some of those jobs like ā€œreptile farmerā€, ā€œbarrel assemblerā€, ā€œnut sorterā€, and ā€œmicrofiche mounterā€, so you can’t be denied disability benefits based on your hypothetical ability to farm reptiles.

Being told every four years ā€œwe need you to vote for the lesser evilā€ is hell. I know. I want to scream.

We vote for the lesser evil every four years because there’s a fundamental flaw in our voting system. We use a ā€œfirst past the poleā€ voting system, awarding the prize to whoever gets the most votes (with some electoral college nonsense thrown in). That inevitably means that if there’s a candidate ā€œsorta-like the Democrats, only betterā€ then all the non-Republican votes will be split between two candidates and the Republicans will win.

It inevitably results in two parties. There’s no room for alternatives because alternatives just hurt your own side.

The good news is that Ranked Choice Voting is spreading. Ranked Choice Voting lets you rank the candidates in order of how much you like them. Under Ranked Choice Voting you can say ā€œI like Jill Stein the most, then I suppose Biden’s better than Trump, and Trump is the worst.ā€ Under this system if no candidate wins over 50%, then the candidates with the least votes are removed, and everyone that picked those candidates as their #1 choice has their vote shifted to their #2 choice. Under this system you can vote for Jill Stein (or Kennedy, or Ralph Nader) without electing Trump. It’s a system that allows third parties to grow, gain recognition, and hopefully put an end to ā€œpick the lesser evilā€ politics (here, have a link).

But that system won’t be in place for the November 2024 election.

Things aren’t completely hopeless, we do have a path forward, there are things we can do. But it’s not going to be done by November 2024. You’re going to have to vote for the lesser evil. You’re going to have to remember just how much this election matters, because it’s very likely the next President is going to pick another two Supreme Court Justices. And they will be young judges, given lifetime appointments. This next election could have repercussions for generations. Donald Trump appointed 1/3 of this court, and in a short amount of time it has repealed Roe vs. Wade, gutted the EPA, FDA, and other Federal regulatory bodies, ruled that it’s okay to pass laws making it illegal to be homeless, and gave Trump and other Presidents nearly complete immunity. They essentially ruled that Nixon could have said ā€œthe men I sent to Watergate were just investigatingā€ and he would’ve been fine.

It’s not hopeless, there are things we can do beyond just ā€œvoting for the lesser evil,ā€ but I cannot emphasize enough that your vote (or lack of vote) in November will have repercussions for generations to come.

I told @mistresskabooms over and over again that she could come to me about anything, and I'd still love her tomorrow.

So... she did.

She asked me about what the words "wage gap" meant when she heard them on the news. She told me when her friends in elementary school were "pretending to be mean to their imaginary girlfriends," and she asked me if she'd done the right thing by leaving "and taking their girlfriends with me." She told me when the kids on the bus started calling her a faggot. She talked to me when she read Night in school.

And she told me she's a girl.

If kids don't feel safe coming to you about everything, they won't come to you about anything. Not anything that matters, anyway, because they won't be sure that the thing they're coming to you about won't get them into trouble.

But, of course, that's exactly the point here. These things - we know this, right? - aren't about "keeping kids safe." They're about control, and they're about keeping kids ignorant and - most of all - afraid.

If you are afraid of being contaminated mentally, of being accidentally ruined, of seeing something Bad and becoming Bad yourself, you become easier to control. If you understand that reading about something doesn't mean you agree with it, and that words and ideas may be scary but that simply knowing that an idea exists, or reading about a thing, does not make you that thing, you become much harder to control. You become harder to control because you become more able to test the things you think that you know against new ideas, things like "are gay people Bad, actually?" and "what if a pregnant person could have more legal rights than a corpse?" and "what did the water and sky look like before the EPA?" or "wouldn't ranked choice voting be neat?"

Just for starters.

The idea of "mental contamination" is big in Evangelical circles, but that ain't the only place, not by far. If you're thinking, "Man, that idea sounds like a concept that shows up a lot in leftist spaces and on Tumblr," you are correct.

This concept is a concept of control. It does not exist to make you stronger. It exists to make you afraid and to keep you from questioning yourself and the world around you. This lack of questioning becomes like wearing a cast around your leg forever. Technically, yes, it keeps your ankle safe, but in the process, the lack of exercise withers your calf muscle.

This leaves you with a worldview that cannot stand up to any kind of meaningful stress or challenge. Things are right because they're right, not because you can defend why they're right. These kind of default beliefs are fragile, soft, and easily shattered or shredded.

This shit doesn't protect kids. It makes them fragile and weak, unable to formulate worldviews they understand well enough to defend and worldviews strong enough to hold up to the rigors and stresses of life.
