Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

Avatar

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this

People love consuming the arts, but many hate the training required to create the arts. Not every art degree is created equal, but the connections you make and the experience you gain can be invaluable.

I'm not saying every artist needs a college degree for every aspect of creating art, but art is not always created solely by performers.

Perhaps there is an actor who was self taught and got a lucky break, but the cinematographer capturing that actor needed years of training. They are literally camera scientists AND visual artists.

Maybe that punk band you love only knows four chords and just screams into a microphone, but the sound engineer recording their music probably has a college degree.

Here is a video of the sound engineer for a Hamilton production.

He uses an amazing blend of technical and artistic skills to make sure the show sounds perfect during every performance.

Check out his college degree...

Any other theater nerds in the house?

And the thing is, a degree doesn’t even have to be relevant to worthwhile. In early ‘90s (33mhz computers were fast!) I was working on a BFA (fine arts) when I got into 3D rendering, figured out how to hijack school’s new Mac lab and turn it into a distributed render farm. 30 years later I’m running super computers at a major laboratory. (only paid off school loans in 2020)

I’m all for loan forgiveness so folks aren’t dragging around a fucking millstone for rest of lives. Actually, 4 yr college should be free but wtf do I know?

Hi, I was a theatre major!

I never finished my degree. But here’s an incomplete list of stuff I’ve used it for:

—teaching children’s classes on origami and Japanese holidays (audience engagement, reading the audience, dramaturgy)

—creating a first-of-its-kind pop-up hands-on pop culture museum (dramaturgy)

—job interviews (getting into character, maintaining ‘stage neutral’ stance and body language)

—mending clothes (costuming classes)

—painting a room in the house (designing a cyclorama)

—packing a car for a trip, and also packing boxes for work (set strike)

—fixing stuff in the house and at work that requires carpentry knowledge (setbuilding)

—early childhood care (communicating with your audience, storytelling)

And much more!

So uh…tell me again my degree is worthless outside being able to make art. Go on, I’ll wait.

As a person with a theater degree who is no longer in the industry: I use the skills I learned in that degree every fucking day both as a person and as a desk worker.

Teamwork, communication, working to deadlines, thinking on my feet in a calm manner when things are very literally on fire, first aid training and knowledge, knowing how to interact with people who are above you but are asking for things that are not possible and how to break down what the goal of what they want is to make something that's possible and still let's them leave happy. I learned so much in those 4 years of my degree that make me a better employee than a business major for certain issues.

And, when work wants to make a fake fireplace for our covid-livestream Christmas party, I got to draft it, make a parts list, shop it, build it, paint it, and then set dress it.

And you know what, people loved it. A lot of people told me it really, really helped with the covid Christmas blues and our CEO & CFO were over the moon about it.

My theater degree brings value and worth to society and my community, but shitty anti-art mentalities are a net drain.

this is stupid but I genuinely worry that kids ARE being priced out of video games like. totk is heavily sanitized to maintain a particular rating that often works against itself but like, I struggle to imagine the kid who's approaching their parents like "one hundred dollars for a video game please" my biggest gaming triumph was in high school when my parents bought us an xbox 360 and one game. we got the wii as it was going out of style and played primarily gamecube games on it, and even back then to buy a new gamecube game or a DS game was a twenty dollar endeavour. what kind of slideshow does a ten year old have to present in order to convince their parents to drop a hundie on legend of zelda.

i think star trek should write an in universe reason why some series don’t have swearing and some do. make it a universal translator glitch or something.

the captain of each ship can turn the swears on or off when they want to

Kirk would have kept the swears on but any ship carrying Dr. Leonard McCoy is required by Starfleet regulations to turn them off

How dare you keep this in the tags @narwhalsarefalling

[Image description: a set of tumblr tags that say "#the tags from op are hilarious #spock gets briefly placed on a ship where the cursing is turned on and it turns out he’s been cursing like a sailor this entire time. #’fascinating’ is the universal translator’s way of making ‘fucking nuts dude’ starship appropriate #turns out when the translator says ‘illogical’ spock is actually saying something more like #‘your asshole and brain are indistinguishable from one another. do you really fucking need me to explain this you illiterate piece of shit’ #i cannot decide which would be funnier: if it turns out all vulcans talk like that actually #or just spock. #star trek #tos."

Followed by a screencap from Star Trek: The Original Series showing Spock raising an eyebrow, it is captioned in all caps, "Fucking Nuts Dude."

“Pants were invented for men” not according to my ancestors.

Avatar

Pants were invented for riding horses. People who didn’t have nomad horse culture all wore dresses. Dress wearing old greek men considered pants to be the mark of barbarism. Like the Scynthians and Samaritans.

Also- the Scynthian and Samaritan tribes were known for equality between genders. Where women were renouned hunters and archers. They are where the greeks got the idea for Amazons.

So sorry bro pants are totally for women. You just mad its for riding something that’s not you.

Okay but like based on genital structure, it would actually make sense for mean to wear skirts and women pants, why are we even talking about logic

the scottish did it right

The Scottish did it to hide more knives

The Scottish did it right

aight fuckers I’m doing it I’m spending a full $4 to watch the first lotr movie, for the first time

so like I get, you know, power and malice and cruelty were ‘poured’ into the rings, but like. what did they actually put in those things. what fuckin gold gives a ring malice. why did the elves only get three.

holy shit it’s Agent Smith with pointy ears

this ring was made of weet-bix and nutri grain

it was in this moment, when all hope was lost, that issieldor-whoever took up his father’s sword -

I’M SORRY BUT I’M LAUGHING THE RING GIVES THE BIG BAD GUY LIKE DARK MAGIC AND A DEMON ARMY TO CONTROL BUT EESEELDOOR PUTS IT ON AND HE JUST TURNS INVISIBLE

holy shit I just experienced seven and a half minutes of introductory exposition by a mysterious lady who apparently thinks VERY little of hobbits

it has been remarked by some that a hobbit’s only real passion

is for food

Image

FOOD

a wizard is never late

says Ian McKellan, wishing he was Julie Andrews, Queen of Genovia

I know absolutely nothing about either of these two but I already fucking love their relationship it’s beautiful

Watching OP stumble ass over teakettle in love with this movie is amazing and these posts made my week

every word out of guillermo del toro’s mouth is the most hardcore thing i’ve ever heard and he says it all so casually like he doesn’t even realize how much of a gothic visionary he is

Since childhood, I’ve been faithful to monsters. I have been saved and absolved by them, because monsters, I believe, are patron saints of our blissful imperfection, and they allow and embody the possibility of failing

I STILL THINK ABOUT THIS EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE

Yo okie Guillermo has some of the best quotes and lines I’ve ever heard, here are just a few of his quotes that have me questioning life:

What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? A moment of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber.”

I knew that monsters were far more gentle and more desirable than the monsters living inside ‘nice people.’ Accepting that you are a monster gives you the leeway to not behave like one. When you deny being a monster, you behave like one.”

“When you see something or experience something extraordinary, you can’t go back to normal… I think that that’s the way I see the supernatural-as happening in mundane circumstances or to people who are unprepared”

“To learn what we fear is to learn who we are. Horror defines our boundaries and illuminates our souls”

“Any legend, any creature, any symbol we ever stumble on, already exists in a vast cosmic reservoir where archetypes wait. Shapes looming outside our Platonic cave. We naturally believe ourselves clever and wise, so advanced, and those who came before us so naïve and simple…when all we truly do is echo the order of the universe, as it guides us…”

And the last but certainly not the least:

“In fairy tales, monsters exist to be a manifestation of something that we need to understand, not only a problem we need to overcome, but also they need to represent, much like angels represent the beautiful, pure, eternal side of the human spirit, monsters need to represent a more tangible, more mortal side of being human: aging, decay, darkness and so forth. And I believe that monsters originally, when we were cavemen and you know, sitting around a fire, we needed to explain the birth of the sun and the death of the moon and the phases of the moon and rain and thunder. And we invented creatures that made sense of the world: a serpent that ate the sun, a creature that ate the moon, a man in the moon living there, things like that. And as we became more and more sophisticated and created sort of a social structure, the real enigmas started not to be outside. The rain and the thunder were logical now. But the real enigmas became social. All those impulses that we were repressing: cannibalism, murder, these things needed an explanation. The sex drive, the need to hunt, the need to kill, these things then became personified in monsters. Werewolves, vampires, ogres, this and that. I feel that monsters are here in our world to help us understand it. They are an essential part of a fable.”

I really hope that whoever managed to convince Disney that kids fucking LOVE photorealistic animation and will only watch an animated movie about sea creatures if said sea creatures actually look like real fish is laughing their fucking ass off right now

Kids LOVE when the beautiful singing mermaid’s animal sidekicks look like they should be dead with their eyes open at a supermarket deli

Exit, pursued by bear.

The description of the original video:

“A neo-fascist, in all his Italian virility, begins to insult some women participating in Bologna Pride. This until, frightened by other protesters covered with glitter and by a bear far more virile than he, to devote himself to what the Fascists do best: escape.”
