After 36 days of brutal fighting, the battle for Iwo Jima came to an end on March 26, 1945. In some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II, it's believed that all but 200 of the 21,000 Japanese forces on the island were killed, and nearly 7,000 Marines lost their lives during the battle.
