Not every artist can afford up to hundreds of dollars in programs. Take these and make something great!

Paint Tool Sai versions 1 and 2 were made by a single man named Koji Komatsu. It costs roughly $50/£40. If you intend on using it for commissions or making any kind of money please consider buying a license for it. The license covers both versions of Sai. It’s a single payment that ensures you will have access to all future updates and it supports a man that has created a genuinely wonderful product. You are not sticking it to any “system” by pirating Sai, you’re just denying a man money he’s earned by putting an affordable alternative to vastly overpriced software like Photoshop out there for us to use. 

One of the reasons Sai 1 had few updates and it took so long for the developer to begin working on 2 was the sheer amount of piracy denying him money to continue working on such great programs. Hard work is worth paying for. Stop promoting the mistreatment of small businesses.

yo here’s a useful tip from your fellow art ho cynellis… use google sketchup to create a model of the room/building/town you’re trying to draw… then take a screenshot & use it as a reference! It’s simple & fun!

Sketchup is incredibly helpful. I can’t recommend it enough.

There’s a 3D model warehouse where you can download all kinds of stuff so you don’t have to build everything from scratch.

This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.

We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldn’t even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.

Here’s the missing part of this tutorial:

How do you populate your backgrounds?

Well, here’s the answer:

If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.

The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of “plops” the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the person’s relation to their environment.

How do you fix this?

Well, here’s the simplest solution:

This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when they’re quickly planning compositions. It’s simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.

Even if your draftsmanship isn’t that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside – not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.

Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.

I’m a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!

Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume it’s reasonably easy to learn. If you’re interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!

Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple ‘CAT’ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totally customized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)

The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and very fiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.

By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!

Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.

We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!

Proper 3d modeling software is immensely powerful, and if you wanted to, you could model a complex environment that occurs regularly in your comic or illustration work (say, a castle interior, or an outdoor forest environment) and populate the scene with as many perspective-grounded characters as you need!

Another cool thing: http://www.makehumancommunity.org lets you generate a human model. Like a character creator in a game, but more flexible, and the result is ready to import into a 3d editor like Blender.

this is how yall end up going around calling every ex-friend your abuser. its nice for your friends to be able to drop everything for you when youre having a bad time, but its literally NOT mandatory. your friends should not have to ignore their own problems to fix yours. get some therapy.

as a friend, you are allowed to say “i would really love to help you right now, but i cant push back my own issues to help you. im going through my own problems right now, and thats what i need to focus on”. it is NOT selfish. you arent going to be of any help to the people you care about if youre in bad shape and not taking care of yourself. its only going to make you worse for wear.

Its cool to have someone ya vent to, but the people you vent to are people too yanno? Hold a conversation with them. Remind them that theyre actually friends & not a bucket out only approach to dump your woes into. Things like that weigh on people.

This is my first time attempting the Arcana artstyle, I hope I did it some justice!

Hopefully more art of her shall follow! I might open up my askbox if anyone is curious to know more about her.

I've also noticed a few other apprentices dotted around here and there going by the name of "Arya" and they're absolutely beautiful I love them all so much!! Designs?!? Personalities?!?! Everything!!!!!

(I'm so eager to write more about Arya but I worry this post most likely won't get noticed so I'll bury that thought for a little while until more people discover this ^^)

Ok let me get this straight

The new Arcana chapters are supposed to be on a schedule so we get one every two weeks, right? Muriel, Portia, then Lucio. Rinse repeat.

Lucio's chapter came out on July 25th. We got Muriel's today, the 30th. Five days between chapters what???

We got this chapter early by like a week or so. I would normally be really happy about this. But seriously.

Devs. @thearcanagame please. I understand that you have a lot to do and you're busy. But there was a noticeable sprite glitch with Muriel's hair. No one noticed that before it was sent out? His crying sprite was obviously a rush job. It was bad, yo. It was bad.

And I think it's safe to say I'm speaking for a lot of the fandom when I say I would rather have a chapter come out later if it's actually finished. It's ok to send out a tweet or something that it's coming out late because you're behind schedule or something. Or don't say anything and just release it on time instead of early when it's done!

I appreciate you trying to get us content out fast. I do. And the rest of the chapter was great! Training with Morga? Muriel's hair? Kissing Muriel? The collar? Julian's Jeff Goldblum laugh at the end? ALL WONDERFUL. Loved it. It was great.

But your fans can be patient. We'll happily wait if it means the content is good.

I could seriously wait a whole month between updates if it meant they were done to the standards the previous Character's routes were done to! 💞

Okay but I really could see Mikuni making a calendar of himself, Jeje, and Abel to sell in the shop?  (Actually if making money was the goal, he would make a calendar with all of the Servamps in their animal forms.  We already know that some of them have their own instagrams, it wouldn’t be hard to come up with photos.)
