Vanitas were a genre of art from the 16th and 17th centuries. These pieces of art often show the contrast between wealth and death.
no piece of teen media has ever accurately depicted the quiet psychological warfare of bullying. bullies on TV are always dumb brutes and not the evil geniuses of emotional manipulation that they are in real life. being given a wedgie and having your lunch money stolen is nothing in comparison to a classmate quietly creating a taboo against speaking to you that they intend to enforce against all the other kids. it’s nothing like continuous cutting comments from people you thought were being nice to you. that way that the work of one kid can make you feel like every person on earth silently hates you and that you are dirty, disgusting, worthless, creepy and useless. that you can have friends but many of them will not speak to you at school for fear of the social consequences on their end. how that damage lasts in any social setting for the rest of your life
you can’t even “tell a trusted adult” because you cannot begin to articulate the thousands of small transgressions you’ve experienced building to the horror of knowing your peers would like you dead. they don’t have to say it or hurt you physically. they have other ways of letting you know they’d prefer if you were worn fuel

I would literally sit with my ‘friends’ one day, being treated so well, like an equal! Laughing! Getting invited to hang out and watch a movie! Then literally two days later, they’d all be making fun of me and putting me down to make sure I knew my place. I’d lay in bed sobbing until the early morning wracking my brain and tearing it apart trying to figure out what I did ‘wrong’. My behavior never once changed or wildly fluctuated. Theirs did. For no reason.
“…that damage lasts in any social setting for the rest of your life.” I cannot eat at a party (if i even go, knowledge that no one wants me there forefront in my mind,) for fear of being made fun of for what’s on my plate. I check my outfit 10 times before i walk in somewhere because I don’t want anyone pointing and laughing. I cannot have a conversation without berating myself for every single word and inflection. I cannot leave a conversation without mentally punishing myself for it for days. I’ve never once felt secure in a friendship and never well. I’ve even told my spouse that I wait for the day he will get sick of me and leave. I just expect it. That broke his heart, and mine in turn.
Bullying changes your brain. It damages it. Kids are giving each other brain damage and no one cares enough to change themselves first to change their kids, or prevent them from bullying in the first place.

Me: "Damn right"
Random Guy: "So if you're non binary, and, sorry if this is offensive but I don't know the right words here. Like, is it cross dressing for you if you wear a skirt?"
Me: "Its- hm. Huh. I have no idea."
Guy: "It must have been nice to go to school with other trans people. Like, you must've felt safe."
Me: "No actually it was the opposite. It just made me even more upset and confused. I didn't know what being non-binary was. I saw people that transitioned from one gender to the other and knew I wasn't that. It took me a long time to figure this shit out."
Guy: "man that sounds rough. No wonder you guys are upset all this time this sounds painful."
Me: "Well, it sucks until it suddenly doesn't. It sucks and then it rules hard."
Guy: "so It's like working out."
Me: [both of us are now nodding wisely] "it's like working out."

Liriodendron tulipifera, known as tulip poplar (it is not a poplar, its closest living relatives outside Liriodendron genus are magnolias) is a tree common in forests of the eastern United States. It was very valued for timber and when most of the Eastern forests were clear cut, almost all of the great ancient tulip poplars were destroyed. The tallest L. tulipifera that still exists is in a secret location in West Virginia, and it is 191 feet tall
