notice that this dumbass article makes zero mention of “transmisogyny”, only transphobia in general
moreover, while the Survey data isn’t linked (always a good sign), none of the quoted results make any attempt to distinguish cis lesbian attitudes towards trans women and transfems specifically from their attitudes towards trans men, transmascs, and nonbinary people who are not transfem. there is zero acknowledgement, using the word “transmisogyny” or otherwise, that cis lesbians might treat trans women much differently from how they treat trans men
which makes this part especially funny:
But there are other reasons that the idea that lesbians are more likely to be anti-trans doesn’t add up. One is that being a lesbian and being trans are not mutually exclusive – sexual orientation and gender are different parts of our identities. You can be trans and a lesbian.
if the idiot who wrote this cared so very much about trans lesbians, maybe she would have noticed our (trans lesbians’) criticisms of cis lesbians specifically being hostile to trans women even while being supportive (or “supportive”) of trans men, transmascs, and nonbinary people who are not targeted by transmisogyny. many of us have had exactly this experience with cis lesbians who are supportive of trans men and transmascs in the sense of construing them as Female-Adjacent—or outright deem them to be Confused Lesbians who have just lost their way—whereas they view trans women as Predatory and Male-Socialized
for an example of a study which actually distinguishes between attitudes toward trans women and trans men, there’s Blair & Hoskin (2018), Transgender exclusion from the world of dating: Patterns of acceptance and rejection of hypothetical trans dating partners as a function of sexual and gender identity, doi:10.1177/0265407518779139
(in the table below, Exclusionary indicates “no trans people at all”; Congruent means inclusive of trans people in a way that’s consistent with being Straight/Gay/Bi and the respondent’s own gender; Incongruent means there’s inconsistency, such as e.g. bi people not including trans women, or lesbians including trans men)
notice that among those surveyed, 71% of lesbians were exclusionary to all trans people, but 19.8% of lesbians were “inclusive” to trans men, while only 9% were inclusive of trans women. cis lesbians were twice as likely to view trans men as prospective partners than they were for trans women
my point in citing this study isn’t even about dating: this is just a single facet of how many cis lesbians view trans men and trans women in general. if you aggregate the attitudes of cis lesbians toward trans men and trans women together, you’re just using cis lesbians’ affinity for trans men to cover up their stance toward trans women
the allusion to butch lesbians being particularly incapable of transmisogyny is also really funny:
Secondly, as a lesbian, I see so much overlap with the experiences we and trans communities encounter in the heterosexist world we live in. Particularly, as a butch lesbian, I know that we are both used to living in the margins, to not having our identities respected or understood.
there are literally butch meetup/support groups that are explicitly AFAB-Only lmao—not even just that they always happen to push out trans women, which is the more common pattern, I mean that they explicitly do not allow trans women:
the Organizer of this group, Lane, has been an on-the-ground organizer for TERF causes for years and years. like many transmisogynists, he conceptualizes trans men and butches as both just being Very GNC Females, while he despises trans women. there are many transmisogynists who are GNC women, or whose Gender Is Lesbian, etc. there are also transmisogynists who are transmasc or trans men
“we’re both marginalized” doesn’t mean being incapable of transmisogyny, especially when it’s being used as an excuse to not confront transmisogyny
as a disclaimer, the states of our communities vary widely by national context as well as local conditions: most of my comments here are focused on the first world and anglosphere. but that’s not the disambiguation that this article is getting at.
a better article could acknowledge progress that has been made at countering transphobia and transmisogyny in our communities, while also acknowledging that they both persist, especially transmisogyny. a better article could actually engage with the criticisms trans lesbians have levied at transmisogyny among cis lesbians specifically, while also engaging with transmisogyny among cis bi women and gay/bi men
but all this article does is paper over how differently trans men and trans women can be treated by the exact same people: the equivalent of plugging your ears and repeating “you just hate lesbians” when a trans lesbian talks about her experiences with cis lesbians
I texted my friend back: “How many anti-trans lesbians do you know?” She replied: “None.” I don’t know any either – and I know a lot of lesbians!
The idea that lesbians are somehow more likely to be anti-trans is yet another lesbophobic trope that we’re forced to deal with and dismantle.
“as a lesbian who isn’t a trans woman, I haven’t experienced cis lesbians being transmisogynistic, so it must just be a Lesbiphobic myth!”....lmfao. this is so fucking stupid it would be funny if it weren’t so typical
