I wish stories of movies and shows could be contained again. I wish characters could live in their worlds for the right amount of time needed to tell a good story and not overinflated to set up for a sequel because too many threads of the original narrative were purposely left unresolved. I miss good stories that were wrapped and finished in a bow, and if it was left with an open-ended ending, it was for the audience to interpret any possible outcome to further enhance the story, not set up for franchises
i love children’s fiction so much. you’re right, it IS about love and kindness and bravery
being on Tumblr is like playing a violin in a concert hall for thousands of people and a few of them clap, then honking a kazoo to amuse your 2 friends AND SUDDENLY YOU HAVE 20K NOTES
don't even think about it
I think people have truly lost any ability to be patient with storytelling.
‘I don’t understand this’ They’ll explain it if you wait.
‘I don’t like how this episode left things hanging’ There’s a continuation next week.
‘This character is flat’ Wait for them to be fleshed out.
So many of the complaints I see about shows lately are people being confused by things THAT THE SHOW WANTS YOU TO BE CONFUSED BY THATS THE FUN OF MYSTERY AND FORESHADOWING YOU ABSOLUTE GOBLINS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALSO CONFUSED AND THEYRE GONNA DO A BIG REVEAL AND EXPLANATION LATER IF YOU WOULD JUST FUCKING WAIT
Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:
- The protagonist isn’t always right
- The protagonist isn’t always good
- The protagonist isn’t always written to be relatable or likeable
- The narrator isn’t always right
- The narrator isn’t always good
- The narrator isn’t always telling the truth
- The narrator isn’t always the author
- The protagonist’s moral compass, the narrator’s moral compass and the author’s moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
- Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
- Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
- A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they aren’t, you should read better books
I genuinely hope American media sucks for a while! I hope the big companies keep trying to churn out shit and that it’s all embarrassing garbage! I want it to be extremely apparent to everyone how important the writers and actors are to create good media and that they deserve to be compensated appropriately!!!
shouting “DERIVATIVE!” at an art school kid just walking down the street from a moving vehicle, they break down and sob
okay but if i, a guy driving a car, yell that at somebody walking on the sidewalk, that’s not really an insult, that’s just what they are
I read the first part of the post and thought OP was just scaring art students with calculus
I love found family as much as the next person but to everyone who creates art and fic positioning Peter B as Miles’ “dad”
You know Miles has (2) parents right? That love him? Want to be there for him? Actively try and connect with him both together and separately? Are literally the plot points Miles cares most about within two different movies??????
If your entire ATSV creation doesn’t involve Jefferson and Rio and instead hyperfixates on Peter B adopting Miles with Mayday you don’t like found family you like white male supremacy.
Some of you might remember a couple of years ago when Scarlett Johansson sued Disney because she was making significantly less money for Black Widow than was guaranteed in her contract because so many more people watched it on streaming than in theaters, how there was a massive misinformation campaign from Disney that a ton of people on this website (and Twitter and other social media) bought into: That she was a greedy bitch who didn't respect people who needed to stay at home during the pandemic (I believe the word "ableist" was thrown around with aplomb) as opposed to someone who just wanted to be paid what she was owed. What was literally in her contract!!! And where everyone who took more than a couple minutes to actually look into and think about the situation could figure out that her issue wasn't with streaming itself, but with how little streaming was allowed to get away with paying her and other actors. But of course, a lot of people just saw the chance to dunk on a rich woman, and didn't think about it beyond readying some snarky tags and hit reblog. And in doing so, threw their support behind a much wealthier, greedier studio head who is already using similar language to describe the current strike.
Anyway we're going to see a lot of that from studios now, especially now that actors have joined the WGA and it's easier to sell them as rich and greedy than writers, because of this cultural stereotype we have of all Hollywood actors as celebrities. Don't fall for it. SAG-AFTRA represents people like Tom Cruise and ScarJo but it also represents the kind of people who played a Borg in two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager in 1997 or who had one line in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as an enthusiastic audience member. Most actors are not crazy wealthy, and in fact, if you're a big TV fan (especially older TV and genre TV) that likely includes some actor names that you know, who played supporting roles in your fav shows, or who were even a star in something decades ago but haven't done anything major since. The AFTRA side also represents people like radio broadcasters. But even beside that, all workers deserve to be fairly compensated for the work they do, and the threat of replacing them with AI, or real actors being required to sign contracts to allow their likenesses to be used by AI forever without paying them, is an existential threat to acting as a profession in general. The actors are in the right. The writers are in the right. The studios are in the wrong. The studios have exploited new technology to get away with horrifying labor practices for years and their feet need to be put to the fire. Circulate the articles about how poorly the Orange is the New Black cast was compensated for making one of the defining shows of the early streaming boom, and of the studios saying they want to force writers to starve and lose their homes. Don't get distracted by propaganda aping progressive-sounding language about wealthy celebrities. Focus on the real enemy, the truly greedy fat cats who care more about money than people and art: the studios.
It's ok to be a bit sad that you won't be get new seasons for certain shows until further notice, but some of y'all need to be so fucking for real.
Creatives are striking because they require better pay and conditions to get the programing you love so much. All the weird grumbling I keep seeing from some people is not it.
If you don't support the writers and actors, you better get ready to enjoy AI generated Vtuber bs forever. Not seeing your favs at comic con is a small price to pay for ensuring their careers are locked in for the long term because they DESERVE it.
i get annoyed when white people on this site act like tumblr is completely fine if you just 'avoid discourse', when discourse can literally mean calling out all the casual racism around you like its never 'peaceful' here for people of colour. Acting like tumblr is some special site where you can just get away from all the drama of other social media sites sure is a privilege i would like to have.
'Just curate your content!' doesnt work when its basically all the content thats the problem.
I'm going to need y'all to preemptively chill out because the actor's strike is going to mean a lot of things including shows and movies we've been anticipating being pushed way back, and absolutely minimal press tours for the next however long this lasts.
The effects of the writer's strike are months down the road which made it a whole lot easier to support because as third parties we weren't really being affected (yet), the effect of the actor's strike is going to be immediate and we're going to get a lot more propaganda of "these people are overpaid to begin with."
Remember our desire for content does not supersede these people's rights to live.
Support unions, support the strikes.
i, personally, love to straddle that fine line between “fandom blog” and “record of complete psychological breakdown”
Wait, which series does Miles Morales first appear in? All these different series are so confusing
Ultimate Spider-Man, in the universe of the Ultimate imprint. It was the best of the Ultimate series.
Cool 👍
man, what the fuck
This is the most accurate post about getting into comic books I have ever seen.
I hate the implication that the Spider-Man in our universe is the goddamn popsicle
NO EXPECTATIONS
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
spiderverse is also so SO good at incorporating characters’ backstories/backgrounds into their webslinging!!! gwen’s dancer movements, pav’s martial arts and peter + miles’ swinging being so similar and easy for miles to pick up because of their backgrounds in physics!!!!! i love when animation is made by people who love animation!!!!!!!!!!!
