Every once in a while I think about Adrinette and am just overcome with love again.

It would have been SOOOOO easy to make it cliche and simple. Marinette is a shy little fashion designer. Adrien is a model for her fashion idol/favorite brand. It would have been so simple to say “he represents everything she wants in the world and her dream future so of course she daydreams about being In His World and having him as a beautiful model boyfriend.” And it still would have been so fun and cute!!!!

But INSTEAD!!!! Instead this show said.

Marinette took One look at this boy and went. “Good LORD not another pretty person. There was a time I had an open heart but now I am THIRTEEN and know how the world is. BEGONE. Begone you horrid little demon. I will not stand for your evil little games. I am a Mature Woman so i KNOW that you and your stupid little pretty-boy facade and your extravagant wealth are just tools that you use to get what you want and you think your actions have consequences but GUESS WHAT. I’m a human being. Now SCRAM.”

And then he Did. And then later that day he came crawling back to her like “hi. hi hi hi. Sorry for bothering you I just??? Don’t know what I did wrong??? And like i’m not… you’re allowed to be mad it’s fine I probably messed up!!! I’m not making excuses!!! I just???? Can you please tell me so I can fix it??? Please I’ve never had friends before and you seem sooooo cool and I really really want you to like me and I’ll do literally anything,.. here take my umbrella it’s fine i’ll just get soggy… i just want you to be okay. Please like me”

and it worked so well she was like “Okay. Change of plans. I’m not gonna kill him I decided he might be redeemable” and then she went home and IMMEDIATELY started planning their wedding and just forgot the step of Telling Him She Didn’t Hate Him Anymore and also the step of Proposing and went straight to planning their fiftieth anniversary family reuinion party with all their grandkids.

And THEN!!!!! There’s this whole arc when they finally DO date???? Like????? She’s part of the reason he quits modelling. She’s like “the fashion world is HORRIBLE to you” and yet it doesn’t make her give up she’s like. “I could do better though.”

Like. Instead of giving us “marinette likes adrien because he gives her an Opening into her dream future” (which would STILL be so good and girl power and all of it) this show gives us “marinette likes adrien and he shows her the flaws in the fashion world and she gives him a way OUT. AND he gives her the motivation to go against every barrier and fix an entire industry so that The Horrors don’t happen again and so she can make the world as pretty and perfect as it is in her middle school daydreams.” She likes him bc he shows her that there is good even in the darkest places and that you CAN choose to be kind and that the world is fixable and that she has the power to make her dreams come true and that her dreams are important. and I’m just. I’m so feral about this show how does it keep DOING this

This is why Movie Adrienette just doesn't hit the same.

Show Marinette doesn't fall for Adrien because he's a model, or because of his Dad's career. She initially gets angry with him, writes him off as yet another rich loser who is out to make her life miserable (he's friends with Chloe after all), only to flip to falling for him because he humbled himself, apologized, opened up and was downright raw about what happened, basically begging her to forgive him and give him a second chance.

What's funny is how often people will say "But Adrien doesn't love Marinette, he loves Ladybug." But he DOES love Marinette! He falls for Marinette and her zeal for justice. It's all across his face as he hands her the umbrella, in his giggle as it collapsed on her, and it's in Plagg's cackle about becoming lovebirds... But Adrien denied it because he was already wowed by Ladybug. Which is why, after Ladybug convinces him that heroes just can't date safely, he's so quick to turn to Marinette, the girl who is always there for him (even when he's dating someone else), and makes him laugh even when he's depressed about the rest of his life. He realizes that seeing her with someone else makes him sad, and that HE wants to be the person by her side. After that, he can't even see Ladybug's sudden affection for him, as his new goal is to be THE person that Marinette wants by her side, no matter what. He also knows in season 5 that Marinette loves both of his personas, and that means he can be truly himself with her (he couldn't do that with Ladybug, or even Kagami). So right after Chat Noir turns down Marinette after professing his love for her (because Adrien realizes WHY dating her as a hero is wrong, but he got caught up in the moment, just as she did), Adrien is THERE for her. He realizes Marinette is the only person in his life that truly loves all of him expecting nothing in return, and he's not going to let her go anytime soon. Marinette is thrown by his sudden affection, and her low self-confidence kicks in again (because just like being Ladybug, she doesn't feel worthy). But even when Adrien can't kiss her because of Gabriel's control, he doesn't back down about loving her and tries to help her be as comfortable around him as he is with her. In return, Marinette FIGHTS for him, going against his father, the "friends" who take advantage of him, and pushes him to be himself more. Eventually even fighting Monarch and freeing Adrien from Gabriel's control.

I just spent way too long writing all that. Anyway, I'm not normal about these two. I wasn't sure what the show would do about them getting together, and sure, season 5 felt incredibly cringe at times, but honestly, them getting together as themselves is the best outcome for them.

It's always about Adrien/Chat Noir and his cat tendencies here and there BUT WHAT ABOUT MARINETTE/LADYBUG AND HER CAT LOVER TENDENCIES???

YOU CAN'T TELL ME THAT SHE DOESN'T SUDDENLY JUST PICK HIM UP BECAUSE SHE FINDS HIM SO CUTE OR THAT SHE DOESN'T CONSTANTLY RUFFLE HIS HAIR OR KISS HIS NOSE OR PLAY WITH HIS HANDS OR SUDDENLY GRAB HIS FACE AND KISS IT ALL OVERRRRRR COME ON HE IS HER CHATON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND SHE WILL LOVE HIM LIKE A CHATON SHOULD BE LOVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My favourite thing about Plagg is that he loves Adrien dearly, the little kwami will protect Adrien with his life, he went straight back to Adrien when he was given the option to pick a new black cat holder, Plagg was devastated every time Adrien would try give up his miraculous and even criticised LadyBug directly to her face because he was just that worried for him, in ephemeral Plagg tries to cataclysm shadow moth and whilst technically it is because he’s shadow moth, I’d like to believe it’s because that’s Adrien’s horrible father first and foremost and Plagg would not let him get away with harassing his holder like that, the same applies to Tikki with her love of Marinette (it’s also important to note that there’s no reason to blame Marinette for being overwhelmed but as an audience we have the luxury of being allowed to sympathise with both of their situations, both Marinette’s new found source of stress and Adrien’s issues with abandonment)

Big fan of characters realizing they don't get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they'd never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain't. You're just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.

you know that conversation that marinette has on her balcony with tikki at the end of lady wifi??

marinette’s Thing is listening to her head. it’s why she’s so good in battle, why she can come up with plans on the fly. she’s a thinking person. she thinks before she acts, especially as ladybug. this is an Extremely In Character line of hers. she has a great sense of responsibility as a superhero and she recognizes that to carry that weight, you have to listen to reason.

adrien, on the other hand:

he’s in Love. he follows his heart, especially as chat noir. it’s why he’s able to open up so much under the mask, why he seems more relaxed and free as chat noir. he doesn’t have the same sort of responsibility that comes with being adrien agreste.

and then i got to thinking about the episode ‘Ladybug’:

the reason why chat noir believes the fake ladybug for so long isn’t because he wasn’t paying close enough attention, or because he doesn’t know ladybug as well as he thinks she does, or because he was blinded by his love for her.

it was because he FOLLOWED HIS HEART.

and that’s part of the main reason she’s so careful with identities, while he’s shown multiple times that he’s comfortable with revealing them. she’s listening to her head, thinking about how it could affect them in the long run, whereas he’s listening to his instincts.

there are cons to both sides, of course: ladybug’s quick thinking in battle as opposed to chat noir’s easygoing nature causes her to naturally be seen as the much more competent superhero, which is why i think she gets more media attention. but thinking too much takes a toll on ladybug, and chat noir sees the effects of it firsthand.

we see this dynamic pretty much every time ladynoir interacts, but specifically in episodes such as gamer 2.0:

this is one of many instances where he has to remind her to take a break from listening to her head, because he can see it’s exhausting her.

in addition, have this parallel that somebody’s definitely pointed out before between origins and miracle queen:

he realizes that she gets in her own head in battles, particularly when she messes up. this is him reassuring her, making sure she’s enough herself to focus on the task at hand. he’s balancing her out. 

and this is what has always bothered me about the ‘true selves’ trope. i never believed it, because ladybug is no more marinette than marinette. chat noir is no more adrien than adrien. they’re just in different situations in and out of the suits that require them to think in different ways.

and in that way, they quite literally compliment each other. she’s the thinking to his feeling. he’s the heart to her head. she’s the logic to his love, and THAT, dear people of the jury, is why i am a ladynoir stan. thank you for coming to my ted talk

(if i may add: the above point is literally the reason why this season was so hard for chat, and why ladybug made the choices that she did to include so many heroes, and why she didn’t even really consider the effects it might have on him. but it’s also the reason why it’s still the two of them at the end. because it was always supposed to be.)

yes this! and one thing that always really strikes me about the episode ladybug is that she scolds chat for listening to his heart instead of his brain, like you pointed out, but in a crucial moment of decision, she does the same thing. when HM throws chat off the building, she has to choose to either go after chat or take mayura’s miraculous. she had only a split-second to decide, and she chooses to save chat. He didn’t even really need saving. He would’ve been able to handle himself—he even said as much. He didn’t understand why listen-to-your-brain ladybug would make the choice that was so obviously illogical. and when he asked her why, her only answer was, “because we’re ladybug and chat noir.” When the chips were down, when she was faced with a true head versus heart choice, she ignored the advice she has just given him and listened to her heart instead.

both head and heart are needed to make a real hero, and Marinette and adrien have plenty of both—they just manifest differently at different times, and their natural tendencies toward one or the other work well in tandem to balance each other and teach each other how to be better people, better friends, better partners, better heroes. And I expect that this balanced partnership will only be emphasized even more in s5 now that they’re back to a duo.
