October 14, 1977, Anita Bryant is pied for her antigay bigotry at a press conference in Des Moines, IA.

bandit1a

It was 40 years ago today…

Never gets old.

40 years on and it still is gratifying

Anita’s still alive and kicking and being anti-gay. Thom Higgins, who threw the pie when he was 27 – and was poetically from Beaver Dam – passed away 17 years later at 44. Info on his life is here. The pie throwing was a big deal. In an age before the internet let gays feel connected, and long before ACT UP, the pie showed small pockets of gays that we could fight back.

it showed that gays were human beings, who might be in the room with you, that you had been accepting as being equals and treating as people. you didnt suspect them as bieng gay, why should you treat them different after? do they become less human after finding out? i mean, its almost like you just found out they have an oppinion on your bullshit

She was “pied” on TV.  All across the country, people got to see proof that the LGBT community weren’t going to just sit there and take it.  People who thought they had no choice but to stay silent saw a horrible woman get humiliated on live TV.

One of the best moments in television history.

happy pride, y’all.

Not gay as in happy, but queer as in fuck you.

The hermits are like muppets to me. You could insert them into any story and they would make it better. Like could you imagine hermit christmas carol? That would rock

*cracks knuckles*

Mumbonezer Scrooge (Played by Mumbo of Jumbo fame) was the richest man in all of Hermitville, he was also the least merry, spending all his time hoarding his riches and building complex machinery, he never had the time for anything else, nor did he want for those things either.

One Christmas Eve his employee and only friend, Grian Cratchett (Played by Ariana Griande for some reason), asked for the night off to spend with his family and take care of his small sick child, Tiny Tim (played by Jimmy Solidarity)

Eventually Mumbonezer fires Grian for his begging and that night, as he goes to bed, he is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, BeetleJhost (played by Joe Hills from Nashville TN) who tells him he will be visited by 3 ghosts that night unless he repents for his sins and let's the magic of commercialism into his heart, Mumbonezer blows this off and goes to sleep.

He is awoken by the Ghost of Christmas Past (Played by Xisuma) and given memories of being 16 and joining onto the Hermit's, this is somehow related to Christmas.

He is then left by Past and met by The Ghost of Crisco Present, Scar(Played by Mr. Good times, Jellie is also there), who shows him a party everyone is having where they mock Mumbonezer, this also, somehow relates to Christmas.

After Scar leaves him he is met with a large, cloaked figure of Crickets Foture (played by the Cleo of Zombies) who shows him his grave and calls him a bitch. This will, also, somehow end up relating to Christmas.

After Mumbonezer wakes up, he decides to go check on Grian, and give him his job back. Miss Cratchett (played by Grian himself) hugs Mumbonezer. Then they all sing a song.

why none of them got into The Good Place

What I love about this is its acknowledgment that Jason had no intentions at all

this is all 100% true but it always made me really mad that Chidi’s “crime” was having a severe anxiety disorder like he needed understanding and therapy, sending him to the Bad Place for something he had literally no control over was incredibly fucked up

I feel like a less-surface theme of the show is that they’re all in a situation where they have been forced into bad patterns by forces outside their control - Chidi has SEVERE anxiety; Eleanor was forced by abuse and neglect to adopt a self-centered attitude from early childhood and, like many people with traumatic pasts, responds by not dealing with difficult emotions; Jason was very overtly raised in an environment where he got no education and all his models for behaviour were criminal and/or self-destructive; and Tahani has been raised in an environment where everything is performative and she is shot down for any genuine expression of unhappiness or non-material want. Just as Michael and Janet are made one way but changed by their experiences, the moral of the story is that things outside your control shape you but you can move away from them. That could easily be really insulting, in a sort of ‘just get over it’ way, but the idea isn’t that they change solely because they decide to be better - all six of them change because their circumstances change and give them the OPPORTUNITY to be better, because they’re finally given the support system they lack.

I like The Good Place because the whole show has since day 1 been predicated on the idea that black and white moral judgements made in a vacuum are bullshit, and that moral choices are informed by things outside our control, whether that be education, behaviour modelling, unfair treatment or mental health issues. That doesn’t mean we aren’t responsible for our actions but it DOES mean we have to understand morality in the context of people’s varied experiences AND asks for the possibility that if their environment is improved, their ability to function as moral agents also improves.

“sending him to the Bad Place for something he had literally no control over was incredibly fucked up” yea it was fucked up that was the entire point they made in the show. thats why they spent multiple seasons fighting to change the system of the Good Place vs. the Bad Place.

GOD I need to stop listening to The Silt Verses right before bed

Not cause it's scary - I mean, it is scary in a way, in several ways, and frankly this episode (33) had its goddamn moments what the fuck - but because I get hype and want to come on here and verbally shake people until they understand.

I'm especially caught right now by the juxtaposition of the Roemont and Val scenes. Frankly, I'm really tired of people acting like how they're remembered is the important part of their lives, and it was INFURIATING to listen to Roemont wax poetic about all the things he's done for the Faith and how all of the work of his life will be undone if future editors of the Verses think Faulkner's story eclipses his, and cut him out as irrelevant. Like. Come the fuck on dude, the work of your life wasn't to do all these things, but rather to continue to receive acclaim for them centuries after you're dead? The complete lack of self-awareness or perspective is distasteful.

But then. The Last Word, the Retcon God. THIS is what it would be to have the work of your life erased. HE is the editor snipping events out of reality itself.

Roemont is whining about how someone he hates is gonna be more popular than him in a century or two, and up north Val is rewriting perceptions on the fly. Roemont is mad some people who never met him will forget that he gave the order to reclaim the Gulch, and up north Val is forcing a woman to forget that her husband and son ever existed, and because she said so, they actually didn't!

God I love this podcast.

this wasn't particularly relevant to the central point of the post i saw this expressed in so i'm not gonna bother op with nitpicking but i do think it's kinda wild to say tsv "shifted into" political horror when literally our introduction to hayward in s1 has him telling us about local agricultural gods being forcefully replaced by an agribusiness cereal mascot and MAYBE i'm a bit sensitive to that as a person who spits on the name of earl butz but that was the moment in s1 that made me want to go full wicker man on the powers that be within the setting

dni if you support relationships between vampires and the vampire they sired. i am so serious, i dont care what your justification is, that is an unforgivable power imbalance. its almost as bad as vampire human relationships (and if you support that i hope you get a splinter in the heart)

🧛‍♀️ vampbites Follow

op what the fuck is your problem? more maggots in your brain than usual? go out into the real underworld and touch some graveyard dirt. i know at least 7 vampires who are in happy healthy relationships with the vampire who sired them. me included! this may shock you but we started dating when i was human and she was a vamp!

👻 corpsecourse Follow

i hate to tell you this but you're in a toxic relationship and i sincerely hope youre able to get out.

HELLO???????

🦇 battybrained Follow

i keep seeing people saying this shit and honestly i think it stems from the infantalization of humans. humans are capable of making decisions for themselves. do some vampires abuse their powers over humans? of course! but you cant assume that every single human vampire relationship (or sire and sired relationship for that matter) is some unhealthy power imbalance, especially when you dont even know them!!!

fangs4fags Follow

i think op is forgetting that humans can be just as harmful to vampires as they can be to humans. dont tell me you completely just forgot about the existence of vampire slayers

🧛‍♂️ coffincreeper Follow

next thing you know op is gonna be saying that a hundred year age gap between fully fledged vampires is problematic

👻 corpsecourse Follow

it literally is. i dont care if you are a 1000 years old vampire, if your significant other is 100 years older than you they have more life experience than you. god you guys are stupid why dont you all step into a sunbeam

hey guys i just went to ops account and their pinned post was about how they dont consider werewolves part of the monster community cuz theyre not undead. just block and move on it is NOT worth it

Irish-uwufication is so fucking weird anyway but like people act like Hozier - who writes primarily blues songs about politics, books and music he finds interesting, and having sex with hot women he picks up in bars - is just a nature man is so weird. Like you have Americans saying he is a bog man, he only writes acoustic songs about chaste love and nature. He lives in the woods and doesn’t interact with society at all. He is made of trees and fairies because that’s what Ireland is.

It’s especially fascinating ( racist) how they refuse to acknowledge that his art is heavily influenced by black artists and traditionally black American genres. But it makes sense for yt folks who romanticize whiteness to be made uncomfortable by and ignore the proximity and origin of blackness in the art they like.

I'm Diné (Navajo) and in high school I was put in some kind of group for native kids. It was run by a white woman who told us that if we were ever in class and feeling overwhelmed, we had permission to just up and leave class to go wander around outside and reconnect with nature. We all took advantage of this regularly

the implication she thought you were like, forest fairies that had to periodically connect with nature to regain your strength is the most racist but also kinda funny thing I ever heard

At a previous job (removing invasive carp from the Mississippi river) we would get lots of bycatch. While most native species could just be tossed back in the water and do just fine, paddlefish are a lot more Fragile and really don't do good when out of the water. To help them, we would pull them through the water to force it over their gills and give them a jump start. The best place to grab them is by the rostrum. It's all very scientific, but I couldn't help but feel funny grabbing these goobers by the schnozz taking them for a ride

the key to enjoying the magnus archives is understanding that every single person is a bitch. name a character and i can tell you right now they have the most petty bitchy tendencies. you have to understand that all of these characters are absolutely insufferable bitches and there's nothing any of us can do except say slay king live your truth. they served cunt and if innocents died along the way that's none of my business thank you
