Tumblr "feminists": yuri is for men

Twitter dudebro weebs: yuri is for men

Yuri authors: Don't forget to block the annoying heteros (Iori Miyazawa) don't use my characters in your gross homophobic memes (Nio Nakatani) I'm making this manga free because I am a lesbian and I want to spread awareness and someday be able to get married to another woman in my home country (Alt Hanakage)

Avatar

Now that I'm home from work I actually want to go into a bit more detail!

Iori Miyazawa (Otherside Picnic) - had a rather long rant in an interview about readers who are locked into "heterocentric values" and don't accept that lesbians actually exist, he suggested blocking them when you encounter them on social media.

Nio Nakatani (Bloom Into You) - Sayaka's homophobic senpai was a meme for a while with Japanese edgelords who used her as a sort of Homophobic Hero, so she lambasted them on twitter

Alt Hanakage (Senpai no Kouhai) - is an out lesbian who has talked about how her personal experiences inform her work. She made a short manga called "Ring On My Finger" about her frustration at being unable to marry another woman and made it available for free because she wants more people to understand her frustration.

And while I'm here I also want to shout out this butch x butch yuri anthology, which was spearheaded by yuri artist Natsuo Mutsumi (self-described nonbinary lesbian) and features work by many other LGBTQ mangaka including Alt Hanakage (mentioned above) and trans artist Nekobungi Sumire (who has a tumblr!! @ nekobungi )

I think one of the goals of society should be that someone who requires expensive medicine and a lot of care can live an amazing life, the longest life they possibly can, with dignity, even if they have no friends or family or anyone who cares enough about them to help. the goals of a society should be to make life better than if we are alone, society should want life to be as good as possible for as many people as possible, and those goals should account for people not having social support networks.

social life aside, the most hated or ignored person in town should be able to live as good and fair and just of a life as the most loved person in town. survival needs to stop being a popularity contest.

The fact that my mother who is Hispanic who believes in god and I have come out to (which we still don’t talk about) worries one day I won’t come home because I’m just going to an lgbt event (concert, bar, art event) and she is afraid of me being gunned down and hunted. She isn’t homophobic or transphobic anymore but she isn’t accepting either…she just tells me to look for the exists and have an escape plan before hand…what is this reality…like what the actual fuck

i have the same experience. my mother isnt homophobic but shes still unlearning a lot. but there was a lot of back and forth from her between me and my twin because we were working a pride event in our hometown and she believed that someone would show up and massacre. it's an unfortunate united statian fear (i am going to assume youre from the US here because what other country is as fucked about mass shootings than the US), that is grounded in reality, but immigrant parents also have an insane paranoia and it is often what prevents us (and their children) from living their fullest lives. I used to live in daily fear because my parents made it seem like 1. staying home with family is the best way to be safe 2. never leaving the family is the best way to stay safe 3. depending on the family is the best way to be safe. This gets in the way of daily life, and I used to believe being safe was the most important thing to me, even if it meant taking the bare minimum just because it was "safest" (or more like, the safest to my parents). I missed out on fuller opportunities because I put my parent's version of safety over my need to be a person.

I cannot tell anyone how to live their life, and your mom's fears are real just like any other united statian--but I physically cannot live my life thinking something bad must happen to me just because I left the confines of my home. Yet at the same time, there exists a genuine anxiety and fear anytime I do leave my home that maybe something or someone will find me.

Keep yourself safe by doing what you feel does that best. Take some self defence classes so that you can train your body and mind to emergency scenarios. Make escape plans with friends or groups. But if you only focus on the danger, you lose sight of the light and love that life has to offer. It is, however, a difficult balance to maintain considering the state of the US.

My hot take is that there is no shortage of resources for help and mental health for young men but young men are just generally not interested in any process that entails them accepting the slightest bit of accountability for their own actions and flaws, so that's why radicalization pipelines are such a popular alternative

Avatar

Your hot take is wrong and victim blames men who have tried to find mental health help and been told there isn't room for them.

Yes, radicalization pipelines are real. People choosing them first is a thing western culture is especially good at. Most often on the individual level, people fall into them because they don't know that they're there.

But people getting pushed into them because they have nowhere else to go is a real problem and acting like the majority are just too arrogant or lazy or selfish to bother trying is not going to fix any issues for anyone, yourself included.

Avatar

I live with and emotionally support three of them. There are at least a dozen more in my very small and close knit community. We all went through an apartment building fire together at the start of the pandemic and I have personally been pushing all of them to get mental health help. Two have done the "I'm too MANLY to need that" and have been written off for other reasons anyway, I no longer speak to them. One is currently in his first year of school to become a mental health support worker because he's so sick of having to do it alone and volunteering for the job is the only thing he can think of to do about it.

The REST are getting turned away from resources about half the time they ask for them. It's not a matter of other people taking them, it's a matter of underfunding and political lobbying and white collar scams. There just isn't enough to go around and while that would be easy to fix from the top, blaming the other people on the bottom is going to get you absolutely nowhere.

YES EXACTLY THANK YOU YOU ARE UTTERLY CORRECT AND YOU SHOULD YELL IT

it literally just boils down to “do you want things to be better or do you want to lash out at people you perceive as your oppressor.” it fucking sucks but sometimes in order to move toward liberation you have to do things that aren’t fair. you have to treat some asshole with respect and sit down and talk to him because as annoying and exhausting as that conversation may be for you in the moment, having more allies on our side is extremely important in the long run. we cannot dismantle the patriarchy without cishet men on board. let go of this internet “i don’t owe my oppressor education” mindset and actually engage with people. you don’t have to put yourself in harm’s way to do so. you’re not stupid. you can deduce for yourself when it’s safe to engage and when it’s not. but we need to stop hiding behind these weird internet mantras like “i don’t owe my oppressors anything” and “i shouldn’t have to educate you” because that gets us nowhere. we have to do things that aren’t fair if we want things to change.

I'm having SUCH a bad day could you please drop an image of that one dude from the Precambrian Era (you know the one)

philbert my beloved

Image

I have been informed that Philbert (anomalocaris) is not from the Precambrian Era.

they are instead from the Cambrian Era, they are one of the many lovely creatures we were given after the Cambrian Explosion.

It is with a heavy heart that I must delete this post, as I simply cannot stand to spread inaccurate information about Philbert, whom I love.

This post will be deleted in 24 Hours,

I know it’s not hard to point out reactionaries hypocrisy when it comes to like safe spaces or hug boxes or whatever but genuinely how much of an echo chamber do you have to exist in for you to think this is a reasonable thing to say

reblog if attacking fascism is really the hill you want to die on

this is literally like one of the most justified and honorable hills you could die on??? lol??

Queer kids deserve to become queer adults. To grow up supported. To go through adolescence finding themselves, instead of going through their 20s grieving the years they weren’t safe and had to pretend to be someone else. To be safely queer before financial independence. Wanting queer youngsters to not have a lifetime of conditioning and trauma to unpack isn’t child abuse, it is literally the opposite. Queer kids deserve to be safe.

There's something in how instead of lifting up this young afro latino man, the first thing miguel and jessica do is put him down and make him feel unworthy.

There's something in how this mirrors older POC struggling with their own trauma put down younger POC because the trauma and struggling made them stonger. Rather than seeing that strength doesn't have to come from sorrow, it can come from support.

This contrasted by how Hobie and Pavitr automatically go to support Miles in their own way; how they both go to lift him up.

people be fucking normal abt ftm bottom surgery challenge.

None of the commenters are gonna see this, but! If anyone’s interested in meta or phalloplasty but is kind of on the fence because they’ve only heard Terrible Wretched Things about the surgeries and results, you should try to find a copy of Hung Jury by Trystan T. Cotten! It’s a collection of testimonials from FtMs who have had bottom surgery, including their reasons, details about some of their procedures, and individual satisfaction ratings, and it includes testimonials from several trans men of color!

This is the book that convinced a buddy of mine to go through with metoidioplasty! I pinky promise, the surgeries are way way way better and safer and more effective than we’ve been made to believe they are. If it’s a procedure you want/need for your health and happiness, it’s a procedure you deserve!

LITERALLY THIS!!!!!! ppl are just parroting what they hear and they’ve been saying the same shit for decades. news flash assholes!!!! if you actually do your research, you’ll find it has gotten better!!!! what you mean is that bottom surgery won’t make you cis, and that is not the fault of bottom surgery.

I'm sure it's progressed in 20 years but when I'm in multiple FTM trans groups and seeing multiple posts from guys who've been basically butchered, including several who have had it just straight up reject and fall off, you bet your ass I'm not spending thousands of dollars to get bottom surgery. It's just not worth it to me.

“my information is decades out of date but i’m still gonna fearmonger anyway.”

I highly recommend that anyone considering a phalloplasty checks out this site

It goes into detail about everything from different types of procedures, to preparations, to recovery, and to risks.

I've found it extremely helpful while I was looking over my options because they don't just vaguely warn you about potential complications; they explain them in depth with the goal of informing you rather than dissuading you.

I think one of the most important takeaways I found here is this section:

The phalloplasty has come a really long way since it was first preformed (almost 100 years ago, I believe!) and complications are a risk with any surgery. Phallo has higher complication rates, sure, but it also boasts a very high satisfaction rate--higher than that of people who have undergone cardiac surgery. And regardless of all of this, shaming people or calling transmasc surgeries "butchering" or "invasive" or "dangerous" is kind of awful actually.

(There's also a similar site for people considering metoidioplasty too!)
