Quick life update:

  • We think we're staying in New Mexico. It's dangerous for me to be a librarian in TX right now, I feel. Or an ELA teacher, really. Not to mention the pay here is astronomically different.
  • I have mixed feelings about my current campus, and I'm really struggling with that. For the most part, things are great, and I feel like I'm making a difference. No plans on leaving; I'm working on too much to want to stop now.
  • Our 15 year wedding anniversary is on the 20th. We visited Santa Fe during Spring Break to celebrate. It was a bit too windy because we continue to underestimate the weather (why is it still so cold in March?!), so we're hoping to go back when it is warmer.
  • We're planning on visiting TX in the summer for a week or so. I can't wait to see my mom. We're trying to talk her into moving out here with us since we're thinking of getting a house at some point. Gotta figure out how to transfer my TRS funds over.
  • My physical book reading game has been so much stronger lately than in the past.

Oof, I made the mistake of watching my previous schools news program, and the news program for the middle school I interviewed for and really wanted.

The first made me homesick for my previous campus. The other one made me happy for who got the position but hurt all the same. But I'm still hurting.

Thinking about starting a weekly news program club at my current campus which is why I was checking them out.

Been a hot minute since I updated.

We've officially been in New Mexico for four months. There are a lot of things I miss about Texas, but I will say this for New Mexico: it's absolutely beautiful. Like, these mountains?! What?!

Getting used to the way they do things has taken a little bit of time. There feels like no structure when it comes to a lot of things. There are no certified elementary librarians, just "library support specialists" or para's in the role which blows my mind. There are good days and bad days.

There's supposed to be snow tomorrow, so information came out about inclement weather and late starts which is all super new to me.

💯🙏💛🟨👍

Worst part about this is I've only ever used that yellow square emoji once and it was just to see how it looked. This isn't who I am. However, in retrospect, I suppose it is

Reading through the notes is a surreal experience please keep adding more to fuel my effervescent consumption of non descriptive emojis

I've been ignoring student loan emails.

My first statement came in and I am currently having a panic attack. Time to apply for SAVE and the IDR plan.

Oh, it's not both you apply for. Just the one. Jeez, I owe a lot of money. Good thing I like my job!

I love my husband something fierce.

I'm so proud of him.

Update: Husband did not like being called bougie 😂😂 And the book darts are for his notebooks.

My husband is so bougie. He ordered these fancy pens and "book darts" to mark up the texts he has to read for grad school.

And he ordered 2 of these $18 notebooks. I know he didn't want these 300 page ones but had to get them because there was no in between. And I get he need special notebooks since he's left handed but damn.

He's the same way with clothes, super picky. We went to the mall last weekend to try and find shirts he likes that aren't polos from Kohls.

Today is hubby's first day of grad school! The whole reason for this move is finally happening!

It's been a minute, so here's an update!

I cried on my third day if work, but it's gotten much better. It's been a lot of learning new things, and the district only gives 3 days of training versus a week and a half before school starts.

Our licenses have come in, so we're officially New Mexicans. One of the cars is getting it's new registration today, so it won't stick out with its Texas plate anymore.

Hubby has signed up for classes and starts next week. Things seem to be working out!

It's absolutely beautiful here, and I really like our new place. We've been having an issue with our dishwasher and/or our garbage disposal, but I'm hoping it's fixed soon.

I've reached the point at school where kids are telling me their life stories. I hope that indicates they feel safe in the library!

My previous aide and I are in touch, and I miss her. Every time I talk to her, I feel a little guilty because my replacement is a HOT mess, it sounds like. But I'm glad I don't have to deal with HB 900!

I....I think I'm in charge of 3 elementary schools in addition to my MS home campus.

It's something that's been in the back of my mind that might be the case based on what the AP told me in an email, but I brushed it off.

I've been looking on Destiny. I can't log in yet, but I'm basically clicking all the links at this point. Anyway, when I got into the district, I saw that the elementary schools don't have a certified librarian. They have library techs/library assistants/educational assistants, whatever they're referred to as. When I look at Destiny, which someone above is updating, I saw my name as the librarian at my campus. On the elementary schools, a librarian from the secondary campuses is named as the librarian. I'm on 2, officially, and I assume I would be the librarian to the third elementary schools because it's the same name as the MS.

This will be an experience! First day is tomorrow.

Move Update

Just a quick (hopefully) update on our move! We lucked out with our apartment considering that we got it sight unseen. It's slightly bigger than our last place; our walk-in closet is sick, more kitchen space/storage, and I am loving having the washer and dryer inside the apartment vs. being outside in a storage unit.

Literally everything is less than 5 miles away. The most driving I've done is to sign my contract and for my new hire orientation trainings.

Heat without humidity is excellent. I'm convinced that stuff is slightly more expensive than in Houston. My husband doesn't thinks so, so I could be making it up. It's going to be a little bit before we financially recover from this move. But the pay bump is going to help, hopefully.

Anyhoo, so far, we like it in NM. Contract start day is Thursday, and students come back on the first. Looking forward to starting work!

Avatar

This has been quite the week! But we are officially moved in, and I signed my contract for my new job. Swung by my new campus and my goodness, it's in the middle of nowhere. Like, a building surrounded by a desert like landscape.

I think I'm in a logistics hangover right now because I can't do anything. Luckily, my wonderful husband offered to unpack everything and organize all the things.

Avatar

Oh my God, our stuff mostly fit. Our mattress, box spring, and frame aren't coming with us. The mattress and box spring are a year and a half old, so we were planning on getting a new one. When we tries to disassemble the frame, the screws were stripped because of the last moving company and we can't get it out.

1. Our trip to our new apartment was awesome.

2. I need this man to wake up so we can get our UHaul because if we don't and can't clear the downstairs, the movers will take one look at it and say nah. But also, we both couldn't sleep last night, so that's a thing.

Our lease came in yesterday! We officially have a place to live in NM for the next 15 months.

A busy week is ahead of us. Driving both cars packed with stuff Thursday so we can be there Friday for the keys and initial move in. Driving back on Saturday. Last minute packing and cleaning on Sunday. Pick up the uHaul and movers on Monday (🤞🤞), starting the drive back with a stop at a hotel, then the last leg of the journey with movers to unload on Tuesday. Our goal is to not have to come back.

Then next Friday I have a personnel appointment for my new job and the following week is a couple of new hire orientations and contract starts! Which means I won't have a lot of time to catch my breath, but let me tell you, my first order of business after my new hire stuff is to go see the Barbie movie!

Avatar

Our current worry is the UHaul won't fit all our furniture. Getting a 15' truck because it's advertised for a 1-2 bedroom home. We only want to do one trip with the UHaul. 🤞🤞 it works out!

My next worry is that the movers we arranged through the UHaul website won't contact me/be no shows.

Waiting for the apartment to send the lease. Took care of the renters insurance and deposit, but I'm waiting for the lease before paying the move-in costs of the prorated rent.

Oh man. It's happening soon.
