I don’t have anything celebratory to post today. But if you’re a creator who has made yourself vulnerable by sharing things that matter to you and has gotten bad-faith, mean-spirited, sour-minded responses undeserving of your generosity, I hope you come across countless pockets of joy today. And if you’re someone who has decided to use your precious, irreplaceable time on this earth sending those responses and trying to steal someone else’s joy to make up for the sorry state of your own, I hope you sit in fresh gum, tear every bag of flour you try to open, spill something incredibly hard to pick up somewhere where you’ll be stepping on the pieces for weeks. I love gentoo penguins, they're so elegant.

It's a scary time out there right now, which is all the more reason it important to fact check.

There's a post going around that Republicans in Florida are trying to make drag in public punishable by death as a "sexual crime against children."

That is not the case. There is a bill in Florida to make sexual assault or rape of children punishable by death. As an abolitionist and anti death penalty advocate, I would say this is still quite bad. And perhaps it does shed some additional light on the culture in the Republican Party in Florida right now. It is also, however, unconstitutional. Both the US and Florida Supreme Courts have ruled that the death penalty cannot be imposed in rape cases. So litigation would certainly be forthcoming should this bill become law.

Please fact check.

…..not even six hours later i got an offer of a well paying full time long-term job with free room and board in queens in nyc, allowing me independence and a way to escape an abusive situation and an unhealthy environment

9/11 killed 3,000 people across 3 locations over about 4 hours time, and we radically altered our entire society and government to prevent it from happening again.

COVID-19 is still, to this day (April 14, 2023) killing approximately 2,000 (mostly disabled and elderly) people A DAY. EVERY DAY. And had been killing thousands every day for 3 years. And we've completely given up all mitigation, quarantine, even just masking in public spaces after 3 years because... well... Capitalism? A quest for "normalcy"? Political expedience?

Make it make sense.

breaking from my normal posting to bring up something really important to me.

have you heard of powell’s city of books? they’re famously the world’s largest independent bookstore, lauded as a family business, tourist landmark, and progressive icon of portland oregon.

i work there.

currently our union is fighting to have the company pay us a living wage.

it’s embarrassing how little powells pays us- we barely make more than minimum wage right now- and most people don’t know that the famous business they’re supporting treats its workers like dirt.

when asked to consider our wage proposal, our lead hr officer stated: “We have all worked jobs where the pay and our personal needs were not in alignment.” this isn’t about personal needs “being in alignment.” my coworkers can hardly afford rent or afford to even feed themselves with our current wages.

what am i asking for?

it can be as short and sweet as you want to make it. we want to show the company that people are paying attention to the example they set and won’t stand for it.

also literally just sharing this post to let everyone know what we are asking for helps too. share it on booktok, tell your friends, tell your book club, spread the word. powell’s skates by on its reputation and in doing so hides its betrayal of the workers that dedicate their lives to make it the special place it is.
