Alistair Cosplay Tutorial 2.0

Ages ago(2010 if we’re being realistic), I had created my first set of splintmail for Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins.  I had very little cosplay and crafting experience at the time, as well as not having much in the way of money or tools, so it was made almost entirely out of cardboard and craft foam.  I eventually cobbled together a build write-up on that costume, and ever since, it’s been nothing short of astonishing whenever someone approaches me in their own splintmail, or to tell me they’re working on their own, and have referenced that tutorial I pieced together when I didn’t have the greatest grasp on how to do much aside from hot gluing a bunch of junk together and covering it in paint.

Fast-forward to the present day, and I’m still leagues away from any kind of mastery, but I did wind up rebuilding the entire costume, save for a few pieces, from slightly more advanced materials and better techniques.  Do note that while some of this may seem like explicit instructions, this build log is simply a documentation of how I went about making this costume.  Can you build it using Worbla, for example?  I have zero experience with the material, but I’m sure you can, if you want to spend that kind of money on that much thermoplastic. This is simply my personal experience with building it.  Whether you’re here to use the following build log as a guide to help you build your own, or if you’re just here for an interesting read, let’s kick off this journey!

I’ve barely touched a costume since before the pandemic started, so I was stoked to slap on some Witcher gear with friends this past weekend and stomp around the Bristol Renaissance Faire.

Pardon my sad excuse for scars.  I slapped ‘em on my face in about a third of the time I normally would have, and we were all extremely sweaty by the end of the day, so they were definitely peelin’!

"...with the mighty power of floral arrangements!"

Hope everyone’s been making the most of fall, considering everything that’s been happening.

Gettin’ ready to binge The Witcher on Netflix when it comes out soon.  Although Eskel’s not gonna show up in it, as far as I’m aware, he’s the only Witcher costume I’ve got.

Can I interest you in joining the Grey Wardens?

hi! just wanted to ask, are y'all going to do the dragon age meet up for bristol ren faire this year?

Yo!

My group's still getting together at Bristol this year, but we're actually not doing Dragon Age there for like...the first time in about 7 years or something like that? Shocking. Devastating. Apologies are probably in order.

That said, if you're into The Witcher, we're gonna be slinking around the Faire in some of that gear on Sunday, July 28th, so if you happen to be there that day and see us skulking about, come chat!

Could you ever date another dragon age cosplayer? I'm asking for a friend, legitimately. She has a love for fine cheeses. Also may help with her fanfiction of Alistair coming out in the fall.

Could I? Yes, although that's not a consideration I really have at the moment, given I'm pretty happily taken. Theoretically speaking, though, I'd consider the two things to be relatively mutually exclusive, so her cosplaying from Dragon Age wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker, nor would it be an essential thing. The utmost factor to me is that she's doing what she enjoys, and if cosplaying from Dragon Age would happen to fall in line with that, well, there's your answer.

I tend to roll late to the party and I'm only just getting around to working on a Grey Warden costume so I wanted to thank you really quickly because your video response to another nonny about the Inquisition breastplate is one of the best resources I've come across for specifically the armor! The whole thing is still super daunting to me because it's been a while since I did anything cosplay related but knowing there are helpful people like you makes it feel a little less scary!

Hey!  I’m always super stoked to hear that something I put out there with the intent of helping actually does help, so it’s never too late for that.  Thank you!

As for the armor, if you run into any hurdles that you can’t jump over easily and need a second opinion, my Ask box is always open, and my armor is sitting right by my computer, so it really doesn’t take me much to pull it out and clarify what *I* did, though that’s far from the *only* way to do it, obviously(and honestly, EVA foam probably would have been a more reliable way instead of what I did anyway).

You can do it, and I’m sure it’ll look great!  :D

Ive seen a few pics of you on Insta that were taken at C2E2 and I'm here to bug you about actually being on Instagram. Get on it and use it mate. I would like to see your face and work more often!!!

At least I can claim I wasn’t falsely advertising, right?  Ha ha.

Jokes aside, I know.  Cosplay’s just a fun hobby to me, and I finally made an Instagram account a year ago in order to make a dedicated cosplay account somewhere and haven’t really done much with it.  The last thing I’m thinking of when I finally put everything on prior to heading out to the con floor, though, is to take a picture, so hopefully I start fixing that going forward instead of it only being a rare occurrence.
