The style of improvised rhyming over an instrumental of a dub record or “riddim” as we call it in ny country was brought over in the 70s along with the use of huge sound systems (and teams of MCs who battle over who had the best sound) and fused with the established style of music in NY. Kool DJ Herc (a Jamaican immigrant) was the one to fuse the sounds of Jamaica and America (reggae wasn’t too well received in NY just yet) and begin the practice of toasting. Through the creativity and shared work of both groups though, rap evolved into what it is today.
The thing is, I’m not saying Jamaicans are gods and we give the diaspora gifts of influence in a cocky way.. although we are.. I’m just saying we have a lot of creativity and a willingness to share.
And as far as accepting that and knowing the history to something you seem to enjoy based on your reply is essential if you’re gonna be annoying on the internet.
