all I do is reblog stuff https://linktr.ee/mr.steal_your_bobbypins You can call me either moon or Ryan :))

For everyone panicking, it has NOT become a law. It has passed its first round and has been put into a markup stage

For more information on who to contact and what exactly the process is for something to pass into law, go HERE^

OH OH I have a bit more info for this! I got this from a discord that I'm in, to give resources and to help folks with phone anxieties there's a full resource sheet with numbers to call and scripts to follow. These bills have been stopped before and its SO SO important to keep the phones off the damn hooks

I can't do all that much from Canada but I thought the wider audience of yall could use this resource, so spread if you can!!!

🚨🚨🚨 [JULY 27] DAWN OF THE FINAL DAY - 24 HOURS REMAIN 🚨🚨🚨

KOSA will grant the government unprecedented control over the Internet and censor it in the name of "protecting the children" unless every single one of us stops them. Not only would it increase online surveillance of all users through age verification and parental monitoring tools, but it would also allow attorney generals to wipe out content that they deem "harmful" to minors, including race, gender, and sexuality...either for any reason or no reason at all. Even worse, President Biden himself has urged Senate to pass this horrible bill, along with COPPA 2.0!

I've done everything I can up to this point...signed the petitions multiple times, signal boosted, even made a few calls despite not being from America...and I'm exhausted. Things are looking very gloomy, and the only thing I can do now is pray for a miracle. If they're that butthurt over data collection and banning sites, there's no doubt that they might also destroy mine and anyone else's Tumblr, Twitter, DeviantART, AO3, etc.

For any Americans who haven't done so, and do not want their livelihoods destroyed by KOSA, PLEASE sign the petitions and call your Senators while you still can! And if you're not American (like me, who's Canadian), PLEASE sign the petitions and spread the word while you still can!

Okay so apparently it's fucking impossible to actually get real answers on this. So:

Use the poll for your main answer, use the tags, replies, or reblogs for secondary answers.

All answers are regardless of the sexuality or emotion of the daydream.

PLEASE reblog for a larger sample size. Seriously I tried so hard to get concrete answers on what people daydream about and every single link just says "fantasy scenarios".

idk who needs to hear this rn but suffering is not noble. take the tylenol

One time when I was younger I was refusing to take headache medicine and my mom said “the person who invented that medicine is probably so sad you won’t let them help you” and now every time I find myself denying medicine I just imagine the saddest scientist making those big wet eyes like “why won’t you let me help” and whoop then I take the medicine

“ur just mad bc testosterone turned u into an ugly hairy bald fatty and not an anime twink”

i wonder why young impressionable trans ppl who want to go on t would be afraid of being hairy and bald and fat. i wonder if it’s maybe bc they’ve watched the queer community treat fat queer people in general, but particularly fat queer ppl who are hairy, bald, and/or not feminine, like absolute fucking shit. i wonder if it’s bc our society assigns morality to looks and fat hairy bald ppl get literally treated like predators simply because of the way they look. i wonder if it’s because they watched the rest of the queer community idolize and prioritize white thinness. i wonder if maybe, just maybe, there are deeply seated issues in the queer community that we might wanna address when they make themselves obvious instead of falling back on mocking individuals for the way they look.

do not tag this post or any of my posts “q slur.” if you don’t want the word queer on your blog, do not reblog from me. thanks.

villain going to the goon shelter to pick out a new henchman

this energetic and diabolical boy was rescued from a goon hoarding situation… he loves pulling levers, gloating, and turning cranks with great abandon. prefers to be the only goon. needs an active lair with plenty of enrichment.

now this fella comes with some baggage. his previous villain was going to have put down when he refused to perform unsedated human vivisection as a form of torture. one of our agents intercepted the execution and brought him to the goon shelter. would thrive in an environment of G or PG-rated villainry.

on the other hand, if you’re looking for something a little more… advanced… then this fine lady over here would make a great challenge for an experienced villain able to set firm boundaries. she will NOT be released to first-time villains; proof of prior henchpeople must be demonstrated before adoption approval. high prey drive. under no circumstances should she be left alone with children or small animals. must sign waiver releasing the goon shelter from responsibility if her behavior is deemed excessively depraved.

Anonymous asked:

what addons do you use for firefox? i've just downloaded it to switch from chrome (derogatory)

firefox (affectionate)

UBlock Origin obviously. out-the-box works just fine but has a bunch of extra privacy/tracking/spam filters you can enable

Decentraleyes protects you against tracking through “free” curated content delivery and works alongside UBlock (or any of the other common adblocking addons)

I Don’t Care About Cookies good for EU users where GDPR made it so every site ever in the universe asks you to accept cookies and privacy terms seventeen times a day. will just auto-accept for you. never see an annoying popup again! but only use in conjunction with

Cookie Auto Delete does what it says on the tin. will automatically flush cookies, cache, and data when you close a tab. those cookies you just auto accepted? they’re gone now. whitelist any sites you wanna stay logged in on and let the rest fucking perish

Don’t Track Me Google removes that annoying link conversion when you copy google results. you know when it changes from “site.com” to “encrypted.google.com/randomnonsensefor200charactersblahblahblah”? yeah. this stops that happening. fuck off, google.

Don’t Accept image/webp blocks sites from using the most useless file extension known to mankind so you can save as .jpg or .gif as god intended. fuck webp. seriously. what even is that.

Bypass Paywalls Clean exactly what you think it is

HTTPS Everywhere automatically adds ecrypted security to any site that supports https (you can do this manually by adding the s yourself to any url but… who can be fuckin bothere amirite? this does it for you)

New XKit …duh

Google Search Filter allows you to remove domains from your searches forever. pinterest? gone. weheartit? nuked. also works on duckduckgo. never type “-pinterest” into a search again.

Simple Tab Groups allows you to group tabs together and shove them out of sight, which is nice if you’re researching something and don’t want 50 bajillion jstor tabs clogging up your normal browsing session

THANK YOU

Tumblr and the No Good, Very Bad Idea

This is bad. Tumblr is the only mainstream site left where you can post GIFs and they’ll continue to be GIFs - well, sort of, as Tumblr previously tested and implemented turning GIF into GIFV with the same purpose, and it decreases the quality of the original GIF file. Turning them into MP4 videos is even worse.

GIFs are GIFs. They’re not videos. Creators spend hours making a GIF that will look good as a GIF, not as a video.

I hope I don’t need to explain to anyone why continuing to screw over creators is bad for a site like Tumblr, whose continued existence depends on creators not giving up on it, and why gif-making is important to fandom existence.

I for one will not continue to make any more gifsets if I know they’ll just be turned into MP4 files. It’s disappointing to spend my time making something and watch it become ugly once it’s uploaded - and that’s what is already happening without the MP4 conversion.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Don’t bother sending a support ticket! They will tell you to do what I’m about to tell you:

Send an ask or submission to @wip- the official “work in progress” blog of Tumblr where people can send in suggestions.

Their ask box is open every Monday from 6AM to 6PM EST.

The conversation isn’t over, guys, but it’s important to be a part of it. If you’re a creator or support creators (and you should), then set an alarm on Monday and go send them a message.

"Narrative distance"? Do tell!

Avatar

Explain it in text? Without emphatic arm gestures or wine? Oh god. Okay. I’ll try.

All right, so narrative distance is all about the proximity between you the reader and the POV character in a story you’re reading. You might sometimes also hear it called “psychic distance.” It puts you right up close to that character or pulls you away, and the narrative distance an author chooses greatly affects how their story turns out, because it can drastically change the focus.

Here’s an illustration of narrative distance from far to close, from John Gardner’s The Art of Fiction (a book I yelled at a lot, because Gardner is a pretentious bastard, but he does say very smart things about craft):

  1. It was winter of the year 1853. A large man stepped out of a doorway.
  2. Henry J. Warburton had never much cared for snowstorms.
  3. Henry hated snowstorms.
  4. God how he hated these damn snowstorms.
  5. Snow. Under your collar, down inside your shoes, freezing and plugging up your miserable soul

It feels a bit like zooming in with a camera, doesn’t it?

I always hate making decisions about narrative distance, because I usually get it wrong on the first try and have to fix it in revision. When I was writing Lost Causes, the first thing I had to do in revision was go through and zoom in a little on the narrative distance, because it felt like it was sitting right on top of Bruce’s prickly skin and it needed to be underneath where the little biting comments and intrusive thoughts lived.

Narrative distance is probably the simplest form of distance in POV, and there is where if I had two glasses of wine in me you would hit a vein of pure yelling. There are SO MANY forms of distance in POV. There’s the distance between the intended reader and the POV character, the distance between the POV character and the narrator (even if it’s 1st person!), the distance between the narrator and the author. There’s emotional distance, intellectual distance, psychological distance, experiential distance. If you look closely at a 3rd person POV story, you can tell things about the narrator as a person (and the narrator is an entity independent of the author) - like, for starters, you can tell if they’re sympathetic to the POV character by how they talk about their actions. Word choice and sentence structure can tell you a narrator’s level of education and where they’re from; you can sometimes even tell a narrator’s gender, class, and other less obvious identifying factors if you look closely enough. To find these details, ask: What does the narrator (or POV character, or author) understand?

I can’t put a name on the narrator of the Harry Potter books, but I can tell you he understands British culture intimately, what it’s like to be a teen boy with a crush, to not have money, to be lonely and abused, and to find and connect with people. There’s a lot he doesn’t understand (he doesn’t pick out little flags of queerness like I do, so he’s probably straight, for example), but he sympathizes with Harry and supports him. I like that narrator. I’m supposed to sympathize with him, and I do.

POV is made up of these little distances - countless small questions of proximity that, when stacked together, decide whether we’re going to root for or against a character, or whether we’ll put down a book 20 pages in, or whether a story will punch you in just the right place at just the right amount to make you bawl your eyes out.

There are so many different possible configurations of distance in this arena that there are literally infinite POVs. Fiction is magical and also intimidating as fuck.

*stares blankly with a look of sudden realisation*

I.. have been writing on and off all my life (though not professionally), and I’ve never actually put a name to thinking about this specific issue. Interesting! I think sometimes I struggle with keeping narrative distance consistent in what I write- tending to go into close focus on a character’s feelings and thoughts at the start more than later on, and more often when they’re feeling emotions like fear and anger than when they’re just.. thinking. Now I know that ‘narrative distance’ is a thing helps me better be on the lookout for that. Not that I’m saying consistency is necessarily best, but.. it would pay for me to be more conscious of what I’m doing.

We got this very quote about psychic distance in a story-writing course I took in college.  Gardner goes on to say that it’s very jarring when the narration goes from one level of psychic distance to another that isn’t immediately beside it.  Going from 2 to 3 is fine, but if you go from 4 to 2 without passing through 3 on the way, you don’t have a smooth narrative voice.   (There was an example given that I can’t recall exactly, but it was something along the lines of “Ms. Jane Smythe had always disliked cicadas.  Lord, she thought, they’ll drive me crazy!  The young woman had never personally encountered any cicadas, but she knew what they were like.”)

OP makes some excellent points about other kinds of psychic distance, and now I want to think about how they apply to Steven King’s increasingly present narrator-voice over the course of the Dark Tower series.

Anonymous asked:

could you define those words in that post about terminology, please?

Is there a ghost kissing me right now?” is a metaphysical question, it asks about reality.

How would I know if a ghost is kissing me right now?” is an epistemological question, it asks about how we acquire knowledge about reality.

What does it actually mean for a ghost to kiss someone?” is an ontological question, it asks about the nature of reality.

Is this ghost’s only purpose to kiss me?” is an teleological question, it asks for a reason for something’s existence.

where do i find a ghost to kiss? this is the most important question.

oh that’s a geographical question

i think they have ghosts in ohio

My roommate and I quote this all the time but the name keeps warping more and more every time. No dinner for gabiblio? No shower for john the baptist? No gas station Slurpee for jorbigoth?

Pronouns? Yeah I gots all the pronouns you could want. Bootleg? No, no, you've got it all wrong. They just, uh, fell off the back of a truck. Now, can I interest you in a she/sher? Or how about a nice he/hee? That one's gonna get real popular, lemme tell you what. What? I'm telling you, these are genuine articles of speech. Look kid, I don't normally do this, but you buy a set of, uh, lemme see... not those... you/youse, I'll throw in another pair free. I dunno, for your dog or something. You ever think about your dog's pronouns? I thought not. Cash only.

Anonymous asked:

Any thoughts on the Russian-Ukraine stuff or would you like to keep your opinions to yourself?

There is literally nothing I need to say in this situation.

I am watching and listening, and helping where I can. My opinion is irrelevant in the face of much more difficult things real people are facing.

I've seen many Russians make statements online apologizing on behalf of the country - cursing it, cursing Putin, cursing the government, and tearfully explaining how disgusted they are by it all, and how ashamed they are of being Russian.

I understand the urge, I really do, but the problem is that it ultimately does nothing. No matter how hard you punch yourself, your friend's wounds will not heal. That's not how it works.

At the moment, all anyone can do is:

Listen and read instead of posting - and think critically about which sources you get your news from (US media tends to be sensationalist, and Russia media is largely propaganda). There's also tons of misinformation online, and I've been trying to avoid posting/reblogging anything that I cannot 100% confirm as true.

Help out those directly affected by events - but be mindful of scams! Paypal and venmo is not available in the Ukraine, this is true. BUT - many Ukranians, especially those who have lived or live abroad are able to use it through connecting overseas banks or cards, and they CAN channel that money to family. It's ultimately YOUR responsibility to fact-check this before you reblog anything asking for donations. Be mindful of what you spread.

Keep informed and don't just spread fearmongering images/fatalist threads. Ukranians are currently trying to stay safe. Poland has opened borders to everyone with a Ukranian passport and suspended VISAs, and there is talk of other neighboring countries doing the same. They don't need more tweets about bombings. They don't need your jokes about WWIII and being drafted.

Ultimately I'm taking a seat and doing as much as I can, but the last thing you all need to hear is my casually uninformed opinion - or ANYONE'S uninformed opinion. Tweeting about current events does not make anyone an expert in foreign policy. If you're wondering what you should do - sometimes, the answer is 'nothing'.

Sometimes, not causing any extra damage through misinformation is the best thing you can do.
