JA Fic Challenge #5: Season of Fear

So, the fourth Jupiter Ascending fic challenge has been and gone but that simply means the fifth challenge has arrived! I’ve decided to tie this one in with the season at hand - that can only mean I’ve set a Halloween challenge!

There are two potential ways you can go with this challenge:

1. Write a story that literally involves Halloween. So you could have Jupiter introduce Caine to the holiday and have him be completely perplexed by the abundance of ghouls and monsters wandering the streets, or you could have Stinger and Kiza establishing a cottage industry selling bee-themed pumpkins.

2. Write a ghost story. It’s traditional to have a ghost story for Halloween, and there are all sorts of possibilities when it comes to creating a JA-themed ghost story. A ghost story needn’t have a literal ghost, either - to quote Wikipedia’s definition, a ghost story is “any piece of fiction, or drama, that includes a ghost, or simply takes as a premise the possibility of ghosts or characters’ belief in them”. So you could, for example, have one of the Abrasax sibs haunted by the ghost (literal or otherwise) of their mother.

Where you go with this is up to you! I look forward to seeing what stories come out of this.

2. If posting on Archive of Our Own, tag your story with the ‘Jupiter Ascending Fic Challenge’ tag - this easily lets me (and everyone else, for that matter) see the stories being submitted. You can also send me an ask message to let me know you’re story is up.

A.I.’s Hymn is a reference to a romantic love song

A.I.’s Hymn or Ai no Sanka [ Ａｉの賛歌 / 愛の賛歌 ] is a reference to a love song, originally written in French “ Hymne à l'Amour”, but there was also a popular Japanese version which very loosely leans on the original.

This is the English translation of the Japanese version “Ai no Sanka”.

The meaning of the name ‘Fujiki Yusaku’

Fujiki Yusaku is the main protagonist of Yugioh VRAINS.

His name is written ‘ 藤木遊作 ’

The used Kanji are Yuu (Game, 遊 ) and Saku (Work, 作 ).

However, the used Kanji could also be read as “Play” and “Make” which is likely where his avatar name in LINK VRAINS “Playmaker” came from.

However, way more interesting is his family name 藤木 .

Fujiki is the Japanese word for some sort of tree (or vine) called ‘wisteria’ in English. It comes in many different colours, like pink, blue and purple, which are the colours used for Yusaku and Ai. The wisteria has many different cultural and symbolic meanings. Here is a list of some of them, that also fit the series and theme.

Revolver, the blue flowers and their meaning

Everybody for sure remembers the death scene of Revolver / Ryoken in season 2 of VRAINS. He’s thinking about his childhood, while lying down on a flower bed, but what are these flowers called and what do they stand for?

They are so called ‘balloon flowers’ or Platycodon (in Japanese 桔梗, Kikyou ) and they can stand for friendship, endless love and honesty.

tl;dr: Balem Abrasax is a lousy friend.I think this depends on what point we’re at in Balem’s life. He’s thousands of years old, and this means that he’s probably gone through a lot of change. If we consider Balem Abrasax as he is when we meet him, I think that he likely doesn’t have friends, but he has servants who have good rapport. Mr. Night is a good example. Night seems to have a good read of Balem’s idiosyncracies. He knows when Tskalikin has said something to anger him. He knows the significance of a legionnaire’s intervention when the plot to murder Jupiter is foiled. That said, it’s a very one-sided relationship. Balem Abrasax does not do emotional labour. He allows Mr. Night to walk alongside him, and to an extent, confides in him (“I would harvest this planet tomorrow”), but they’re not even remotely equal. So the short version is that no one gets too close to Balem Abrasax. They just serve him.But let’s consider as well, the possibility that Balem could find someone who learns his quirks the same way. Another Entitled, perhaps, on equal social footing. No doubt the friendship would be fraught. Mistrust, perhaps envy on Balem’s part, and an unwillingness to meet anyone halfway. And, if he did become fond, I expect he would quickly become possessive. Friendship with Balem is a lot of work, and not a lot of reward.

I could be doing anything else. I could be revising, I could be doing work, I could be playing one of the 300+ video games I've accumulated. Instead I'm writing about how Jupiter Ascending is literally Gnostic propaganda.

Disclaimer: I do not, nor have I ever identified as Gnostic. I am not a biblical scholar, nor a religious scholar of any type. I am not even a particularly invested classicist. My knowledge of Gnosticism rests mostly on a several year old period of my life when I was really into Phillip K Dick and conspiracy theorists; most of the sources I will be referring to I just looked up now. This is not meant to be a complete analysis, simply an overview of those specifically gnostic notions I recalled after seeing Jupiter Ascending once.

This is extremely enlightening, and it really allows for the film to be appreciated from a very different standpoint. The Gnostic worldview is deeply fascinating, and the presence of Gnostic themes in Jupiter Ascending is clearly far from accidental. The name Abrasax (which is an anagram of Abraxas, a mysterious but very powerful word of mystical meaning in Gnosticism) wasn’t made central to the film by accident.
