  • Natalia made a slick title sequence.
  • Natalia making sure Daria drinks her supplements, basically in a situation where if Natalia doesn't do it, Daria won't consume it. XD
  • I think it's fun when Daria and Natalia get into the differences between being a tennis pro and being a figure skating pro in these "Tennis Education" videos. Tennis players think a 5-week pre-season is too long because they're used to getting match play nearly week-in, week-out, whereas figure skaters think 3 months of prep time is not enough to prepare for the seven or so major competitions they contest.
  • It's strange to me that Natalia says she didn't drink water (while competing? practicing?); sure, she wasn't sweating so much(?) on the cold ice but shouldn't you need to consume water to remain hydrated? Was this a consideration of maintaining low weight (for her partner to lift, for her form to promote rotation)?
  • Related, Natalia criticizes her own spare diet during her professional career but it's really Daria who is horrified by Natalia's past eating habits. "You have to eat good! You have to eat!" proclaims Daria. This isn't the first time it's come up. Daria alluded to it in the Maldives. Daria clearly thinks Natalia was too skinny in the past, which is tough because it's likely Natalia was told she was too heavy or fat. Daria has experience receiving that type of criticism herself, so sometimes I wonder about how her views on body image are calibrated and about her anger.
  • None of the products and brands mentioned are meant as advertising/are paying Daria and Natalia to advertise. "Unfortunately." Lol
  • It feels somewhat like a stealth running joke that every time Daria calls herself/insists she is a "professional athlete/tennis player," as if it were in doubt, Natalia pets her reassuringly and Daria pouts.
  • Daria being forced to change strings against her will/preference because what she was using was discontinued could be a big adjustment.
  • Another running joke(?) is Daria teasing Natalia when Natalia pivots to a figure skating comparison by acting like it's not interesting and then "apologizing" with a kiss. But Daria almost always has questions once Natalia gets into her explanation.
  • Interesting how Natalia talks about changing the blade style or brand could cause drastically different feel.
August 29, 1924 It’s funny, most people can be around someone and then gradually begin to love them and never know exactly when it happened; but Ruth knew the very second it happened to her. When Idgie had grinned at her and tried to hand her that jar of honey, all these feelings that she had been trying to hold back came flooding through her, and it was at that second in time that she knew she loved Idgie with all her heart.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (1991) dir. Jon Avnet

Seeing this tweet reminded me that a friend and I wandered into a random NYC bookstore the other night and caught the tail end of Amy Brady giving a talk on Ice. It sounded interesting!

Dough

Big donuts from Dough. Lemon poppy? Chocolate with nibs x 2. Strawberry shortcake. Ube cheesecake. Cafe au lait.

The ube cheesecake is very cheesecake. It also stained my fingers? The chocolate nibs can be a bit much if you don't like bitterness.

Dough happened to be on our way; the other consideration was Doughnut Plant.

The hatch chilis cheeseburger was very good. I was worried it'd have too high a spice level for my tolerance but it was pleasant heat rather than punishing. Smaller than your usual American portions, which may not be a bad thing in some considerations.

Malai

I've mentioned Malai before during a previous visit. It's perhaps one of my favorite NYC ice creameries that my brother has introduced me to--there have been a number. Love their unique Indian-inspired flavors and always want to try every single one. I sampled the coconut chocolate burfi, a vegan flavor?, which was good but richer than I was in the mood for. I elected to get a split scoop of the cardamom pistachio crumble and sweet corn saffron. Excellent texture with the pistachio crumble and silky smoothness with the sweet corn. The mango soft serve reminded us of a lassi, which I haven't had in forever and would love to have in this weather. Refreshing on a warmer day.

Karazishi Botan

The popcorn chicken and plain salted fries for a little one among our party were very good. The honey mustard sauce was yummy, the barbecue not as good. I had the Pan Head Ramen, a tonkotsu broth with miso. The yellow stuff on top is ginger. Didn't come with an egg, though. I didn't mind that much because I had to help finish the chicken and fries. Had a little nigori sake on the side... got started on it before food arrived though.

Breakfast from Bien Cuit. I enjoyed the apple cardamon danish and a companion devoured a pain au chocolat. I thought it could have used more chocolate.

Mid-afternoon hot chocolate break at The Chocolate Bar near Union Square. I got the Italian Thick. They have a cocktail menu that was also intriguing, honestly.

Dinner at Fulton Fish Co. Oysters (yummy; all six were different types but honestly I wasn't paying attention just that the saltier ones were from Massachusetts; I didn't like the vinegar sauce with them though), sashimi on ice (yummy; my companion asked for chopsticks and they gave us this great pair that tapered to thin on both sides), yellowfin tuna tartare (the hummus really worked together well but there were not enough fried lotus chips... needed to be a full plate's circle worth), sea trout crispy sushi (really really good; everything worked together very well; we didn't expect the single bites because we were so focused on "crispy rice" but the fried rice had pleasing crunch and texture and taste, Chipotle mayo added just the right amount of heat, the mint added refreshing quality--hit of the night, could have had a dozen more), grilled octopus (the dish itself was too salty and briny on every count--octopus straight up a salt assault and the salad not balancing at all, I felt like I was being brined--but the octopus was the most tender I've ever eaten in my life, no tough chewiness at al, like if I had blind tasted I don't think I ever would have said octopus, I was so confused how they got the texture; a butter knife cut through it like it was butter). I had a cherry yuzu soda that was very good. Sampled the Green Market Mimosa and it had too many green flavors happening, imo. There was rye bread too but I'm not a fan of rye and this was no exception.

Dessert at Grace Street in K-town that was ridiculously busy at 9ish pm on a Wednesday. It was packed and as loud as a nightclub. The beignets and ho-dduk Korean donuts themselves were not great but the complementing matcha and vanilla ice creams were good. The snow bingsu would probably be a better choice. Felt pressured to order because it was so busy. I enjoyed the lavender milk tea.

It is incredible to me to think how many copies Water for Elephants must have sold because I have seen it every time I have browsed used books. This time it's at the Strand Bookstore.

When it comes to feedback or input you have for some product of the entertainment industry, it might be worth asking yourself this question before offering that feedback: Am I directing this at the appropriate entity--or at the available target?
