oh you're in a horror film/book and your phone died/has no bars? how boring. I think phones in horror SHOULD work. they should ding only to have the protagonist check and find nothing. they should get calls from somebody you don't know but is still somehow in your contacts. google maps should lead you to one place, no matter what address you type in.

phones are such a big part of our daily lives, removing them from horror removes the horror from our experience. what if the horror felt like it could happen to you, right here, right now? what if it felt like it was already happening?

call 911 and something that is definitely not a person picks up.

call 911 and get an operator only for the call to become increasingly weirder and more sinister until you realize that whatever picked up is not there to help.

text messages from someone who's dead. voicemails that sound like dead air until you turn the volume all the way up.

emergency alerts for weather that doesn't happen on earth.

Your phone rings - but it's your phone number on the screen. You answer it, but all you hear is heavy, laboured breathing. You go to say something, only to hear your voice on the other end tell you "It's too late," and hang up.

You get a message from a number you don't recognise. It's a picture of you from behind. You turn and see there's nobody there. When you look back at your phone, you see the sender has sent another text - "Sorry, wrong number."

Your phone rings - it's a private number. You answer it, only to feel the sensation of something licking your ear.

You wake up to find a voicemail. You play it back, only to hear an autotuned version of your own voice reciting a Bible passage - 1 Peter 2: 18-20.

You get an emergency alert. It says "I'm sorry."

I feel like so much slur discourse could get solved by discussing intent. “I’m okay with faggot but don’t like when someone yells it out a car at me.” Yeah no shit. I like physical touch in the form of a hug but don’t like it when it is in the form of a punch. People have said the word “gay” “lesbian” “trans” what have you with the most hateful vitriol they can muster because they MEAN it like a slur. So many of us have heard the tone that may as well make the word a slur.

If I saw a sign that says “I hunt members of the LGBTQIA+ community for sport” it wouldn’t really feel different from “I want to kill faggots.”

Additionally, I LIKE that it makes people cringe. It used to make me cringe. Those words have history for me too. But they also are not able to be sanitized by corporations. Shitlibs who would never rock the boat to protect me are never going to NOT shrink away at me calling myself a dyke and I do not care.

MY intent IS vitriol back, sometimes. A bold statement of attack. But sometimes it’s a joke. “His faggy mannerisms have captivated me.” Sometimes it’s a badge of honor from older queers. Sometimes it’s not that deep. What’s behind the words, what the intent is is everything.

YUUKO PLEASE.

YUUKO WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY

It is EXACTLY like Clamp to tease the price of their wish as a cliffhanger ending of a chapter, only to start the next by saying the price is already paid.

But the UNNECESSARY level of drama? Honestly incredible. TRIPLE SHOCKED REACTION CUTAWAY COMBO.

At the very least they Understand The Assignment when it comes to building a sustained level of tension and excitement even in the calmer chapters. They KNOW how to dance their fandom right off a cliff and smile the entire time.

I want to make one things very clear to every queer person making excuses for Republicans and arguing respectability politics -

There is no point at which we will be wholesome enough, respectable enough, pious enough, or common enough for these bigots to deem us "acceptable." And when I say US, I mean ALL of us, no matter which part of the community we belong to, no matter how wealthy or influential we might be, no matter how spotless our reputation, no matter our level of visibility, now matter how "normal" we look, no matter how comparatively "safe" we think we are.

If one of us isn't safe, NONE OF US ARE SAFE.

Supporting the mob that's running around with torches and pitchforks does not mean they won't burn you. The fact that you aren't in the crosshairs right now does not mean you're not on the list.

“It makes any lgbt person supporting desantis look like an absolute idiot”

Yeah because they are fucking idiots

It’s hard to hear and hard to accept, but you will never be welcomed by conservatives. It will never happen. You will never be “respectable” enough. Never be fully accepted. The best you can hope for is that they’ll wait to target you until later.

How do I know? Because I grew up in small, conservative town in the ‘80s where we knew of no out gay people, had never heard of trans-anything, and I could count the number of people of color I knew on one hand. So, who was the target?

I was.

I was targeted, tormented, chased, and beaten for not being male enough, not being straight enough, not being appropriately white.

I am a straight, white, cisgender man. I hit every demographic the conservatives are looking for, and I was still targeted.

What the hell do you think they’re going to do to you?

There’s something about Yuuta as a special grade sorcerer, choosing kindness and empathy, even when it’s the more difficult path……………

It’s like, kindness goes against the instincts of special grade sorcerers. Other characters admit that eventually you grow so strong that you lose sight of your own humanity, you can’t relate to anyone. Instead of a human you become a force of nature. And the fact that he isn’t so egotistical or self centered, the fact that he chooses to be gentle, seems naive to them.

And it’s so clear that it is going against his own instinct, that Yuuta has to fight himself to retain his gentleness.

It’s not natural for him to flinch at bloodshed. He feels no fear in this moment— but he knows this child, this civilian will.

His character growth is like the inverse of Getou’s in a way. He was weak, but became strong, and he chooses to use that strength for the betterment of those around him, even when he himself can no longer understand how it feels to be weak.

can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike

i know since writers and actors are already striking thats gonna take up most of the news space on social media but like. ups has until july 31st to meet the teamster's demands and if not then theyre going on the biggest strike against a single corporation since the early 1900s. the uaw (auto manufacturers union) contract is up this fall, and i believe the alu (amazon labor union) is as well. there's a huge possibility that they might strike as well, depending on how long the ups strike lasts.

im seeing a lot of talk about hollywood going down but i want to see more talk about labor rights and working class solidarity across the board... like A Lot of shit is about to go down

we're about to see a lot more propaganda by more than just hollywood, we're about to see a lot of bullshit political moves on local, state, and federal levels. dont fall for it. workers have power.

Hi folks. There seems to be a lot of confusion about what we as fans can and can't do with the striking happening. So I made a flowchart.

Let me make this SUPER DUPER EXTRA CLEAR. Unless an AMPTP studio reaches out and says "We would like to give you X (money/swag/whatever) to create content for us" (that would include writing or acting in anyway on your part) you will NOT be crossing a picket line.

Cosplay, fanart, fanfic, going feral, sharing marketing posts, watching your favorite show, getting your friends to watch your favorite show, etc does not count.

It is ONLY scabbing if you are getting REIMBURSED by the STUDIO.

Please take this flowchart, repost it, spread it everywhere!

The studios benefit from us being confused. The studios benefit from us not promoting and not watching and cancelling our subscriptions. The unions, the actors, the writers, they all benefit from us promoting in their absence, they get paid when we watch the shows, we bolster their argument when we boost the shows numbers. If we make the media popular and successful the studios have to meet the writers and actors at the table, and the writers and actors will be in the position of power.

Continuing with the Peacemaker Kurogane re-read…and getting in a potentially heated topic.

The more I read into Hijikata and Okita’s relationship, the more complex it becomes to me. They deeply care about each other and know each other pretty well, but their relationship is also colored by need of validation from Okita’s part and regrets and guilt from Hijikata’s. In some aspects, their relationship is heartbreaking and heartwarming, and in another…sorta fucked up.

We know from the Hino extras that Souji had an inferiority complex ever since he was a child due that he was born later instead of being the first child of his family, he was still so little when his father died and thus couldn’t carry his family status. This fueled lots of insecurities and feelings of worthlessness in young Souji, and Hijikata gave him a purpose by giving him a sword - which ended in Souji’s first kill at the tender age of 9, a traumatic experience without doubt - and telling him he’ll need his strength and to be at his side. Souji finally earned the validation he so seeked, but it came to the price of tarnishing his hands at a very young age, which made him feel “dirty”, however, he kept killing to be a support for both Kondou and Hijikata, the two people he loved the most and to whom he became most devoted. And when he contracted TB and started to get weak, his insecurities appeared again - if he wasn’t strong, then he’ll be useless and be discarded. That’s why his plea in chapter 42 is so heartbreaking: beneath his smile, Souji was suffering a lot.

Hijikata was a headstrong teenager - only 17 - when those events between him and Souji transpired, so it wasn’t until he grew older that he realized how badly he fucked up and so he came to feel lots of guilt and regrets when it came to Souji. That’s the reason why he was so hesitant to give Tetsunosuke a sword despite being 15, because he didn’t wanted Tetsu to go through the same path as Souji did. Later when Souji contracted TB it was a hard slap in the face given that both his mother and older sister died because the disease when he was a little boy, and his regrets increased. That’s why chapter 42 in a way, was the necessary catharsis for both of them: Hijikata finally could tell Souji how much he meant to him, that only by being alive it was enough for him, and Souji felt safe and assured that Hijikata truly cared for him, not because his skills as a warrior, but as him, as Souji, Soujirou. And that was enough for him as well. Later, Souji wrote a letter to Hijikata that was delivered after his death where he told him to live, thus coming to full circle.

I think they have one of the most complex relationships in the series. It’s a relationship where there’s mutual caring and love but also a bit clouded by regrets, guilt and need of validation that at the end it was resolved by a heartwarming embrace where they finally could vent their actual feelings to each other, and how they wanted each other to live. Thanks to it, it helped Souji to partly resignate himself to his death - even if sadly we saw in his last moments that he DIDN’T wanted to die - and it helped Hijikata to finally be at peace with himself when it came to Souji, giving him another reason to stand up on his feet, knowing that both Kondou and Souji would be watching over him as well.

@akumanoken some thoughts?

My thoughts?? Well, first of all, it’s entirely on par on how I feel about their relationship. Their relationship is shown as close, from annoying sibling to almost romantic (I will always look at that scene with them under the umbrella and cry laugh), but it’s also clear just how much nuance there is to the relationship.  Their conversation about Tetsu not getting a sword gives the very first real glimpse of their true relationship.

Hijikata has power over Souji.  It’s where Souji’s validation and feeling of worth lies.  As long as he is useful to Hijikata and Kondou, Souji can and will endure anything.  He’s willing to throw away everything and in that regard he does, completely shutting down when fighting.  I almost equate it to a beserk nature but for the fact that he’s not completely mindless.  The light leaves his eyes, and his normally wide expression shifts into something blank.  In a real way Souji takes on a completely different persona when he fights. When he’s serious, and we see that the first episode of the anime when he takes Tetsu seriously and nearly kills him with a shinai.  A shinai… and the only person to take him out of that trance is Hijikata.

On the other side, Souji holds power over Hijikata.  This may be opinion but I can’t help but feel that there was a level of disdain for Hijikata during that conversation, but he’s aware that Hijikata is full of guilt for what happened, for putting such a burden on such young shoulders.  It’s 1000% why Souji gets away with all the shit he does.  Souji ends up getting what he wants, and though it’s not fully explored there’s enough for anyone to see that’s the case (i.e. dragging Hijikata to market to buy him candy).

There was a lot in the air with them, and yes, the TB ended up leading to a breaking point.  Souji was determined to break himself because the only thing worse than being dead was being unwanted. Being useless.  He wasn’t a human, he was a sword, and only had value if he was sharp enough to cut through toward the future Hijikata and Kondou, his family, wanted.  And I think that’s what makes Chapter 42 so powerful, because it took so much for those two to truly express their feelings.

I am biased, I realize, but their relationship dynamic is my favorite for just how complicated it can be.  And to your point I am sure that Souji and Kondou watch over Hijikata… when Souji dies and meets Kondou, the commander is in his battle gear, and after saying his goodbyes to Saizou, when he turns around he’s in his gear as well, from in a yukata with his hair out to his hair tied up and in his haori.  You know they wouldn’t leave their boy out there to face the world alone.  They went to join Hijikata on the frontlines.

I have been trying to write for a while now. I have all these amazing ideas, but its really hard getting my thoughts onto paper. Thus, my ideas never really come to fruition. Do you have any advice?

Avatar

Write the ideas down. If they are going to be stories, try and tell the stories you would like to read. Finish the things you start to write. Do it a lot and you will be a writer. The only way to do it is to do it.

I’m just kidding. There are much easier ways of doing it. For example: On the top of a distant mountain there grows a tree with silver leaves. Once every year, at dawn on April 30th, this tree blossoms, with five flowers, and over the next hour each blossom becomes a berry, first a green berry, then black, then golden.

At the moment the five berries become golden, five white crows, who have been waiting on the mountain, and which you will have mistaken for snow, will swoop down on the tree, greedily stripping it of all its berries, and will fly off, laughing.

You must catch, with your bare hands, the smallest of the crows, and you must force it to give up the berry (the crows do not swallow the berries. They carry them far across the ocean, to an enchanter’s garden, to drop, one by one, into the mouth of his daughter, who will wake from her enchanted sleep only when a thousand such berries have been fed to her). When you have obtained the golden berry, you must place it under your tongue, and return directly to your home.

For the next week, you must speak to no-one, not even your loved ones or a highway patrol officer stopping you for speeding. Say nothing. Do not sleep. Let the berry sit beneath your tongue.

At midnight on the seventh day you must go to the highest place in your town (it is common to climb on roofs for this step) and, with the berry safely beneath your tongue, recite the whole of Fox in Socks. Do not let the berry slip from your tongue. Do not miss out any of the poem, or skip any of the bits of the Muddle Puddle Tweetle Poodle Beetle Noodle Bottle Paddle Battle.

Then, and only then, can you swallow the berry. You must return home as quickly as you can, for you have only half an hour at most before you fall into a deep sleep.

When you wake in the morning, you will be able to get your thoughts and ideas down onto the paper, and you will be a writer.

Five Crows?

And dawn on 30th April?

I was told Four Magpies and a Raven, and The Last Glint of Sunset on the First Day of May (if cloudy, come back next year).

This explains a lot…
