Holy shit.... Never Again Action (the group who started #JewsAgainstICE) had an ICE detention truck drive through them while they were shutting down Wayne Detention Center in Rhode Island this evening (August 14th).

Like they were holding the line across the entry gate and refusing to let night shift guards in and a massive truck just, fucking, drove up to them then slowed as the protestors got up from where they were sitting, alarmed, then the truck accelerated into people.

It doesn't seem like there are any serious injuries. The people who were around the truck after it stopped accelerating into people were pepper sprayed.

THERE IS AN EXTENSION CALLED SAVE PAGE WE

It’ll save an entire webpage, no matter how long it is. It saves all text, most photos, but no videos. I use it mainly for offline fic reading as my wifi goes out in heavy rain, but it’s useful as fuck.

All you gotta do is go to your webpage of choice, I.e a fanfiction, and click the icon. After about 10 seconds it saves the webpage to your Downloads folder with everything you see. Just like a webpage.

You shouldn’t have to worry about space, because my HTML folder is 300 MB, holding over 500 webpages. I even went to the trouble of looking at each fanfic folder individually, and for 20+ chapter fanfic, it takes up about 2MB. Every webpage I glanced at was about 500KB, more if I haved it from Tumblr and had a bunch of pictures saved on accident.

So yeah. This exists. Putting this out there for all the paranoid readers who are scared of waking up and finding their favorite fics are gone.

Even if this review exonerates some of those convictions, that doesn’t even begin to cover the hundreds of state and local “experts” trained by the FBI in this bogus “hair analysis” technique to do things like this:

the forensic hair analysis thing is terrible, the FBI literally invented a branch of forensic psuedoscience with no evidence behind it in order to boost conviction rates, then taught the bogus technique to thousands of forensic investigators in the us and around the world. we have no idea how many people have been wrongfully convicted, and this is just one in a very long list of forensic techniques that lack rigorous scientific evaluation

It’s been another year or two so here’s an extremely recent article about how “Criminal Profiling” is totally bogus and TV shows like Mindhunters continue to focus on it because it looks cool and makes good stories, but it really only works in the movies. 

Profiling was trendy in the 70s-90s but has been falling into disrepute ever since. This 2007 analysis showed that Criminal Profilers do not outperform regular detective work. Here’s another analysis finding Profiling unreliable in its current form and suggests ways to make it more scientifically rigorous. Here’s another.

ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)

this first lyric replacement (”take the breadsticks and run”) is a reference to the tumblr meme ‘stuffing breadsticks into my purse’. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. that’s meme two (2)

“man door hand hook car door” is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the generic ‘stuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill us’ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)

‘gun’ is… yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to “man door hand hook car door” for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)

and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomes meme five (5)

which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)

(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think i’ve ever seen. the initial ‘young man’ lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock meme ‘gun’ matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)

/j stands for /joke and if u put it at the end of ur sentence that means ur joking

/s stands for /sarcasm and if u put it at the end of ur sentence that means ur being sarcastic

a lotta autistic people (and other neurodivergent ppl tbh) have trouble reading tones in peoples sentences so if you add /j or /s it doesnt like... distract from the sentence but it makes it clear that youre joking/being sarcastic, so people who wouldnt have necessarily read the correct tone will now know what tone its supposed to be conveying

All the “scientists” that feel entitled to the mountain in the comments are killing me. Hawaii has natives. It’s their land. They should be able to do whatever they want with it. The “we’re doing this to help them” kind of rings familiar in a bad way, no? I’m sure that’s what they said back when America stole Hawaii 🤔. We were just helping, right?

Science is incredibly important.

It’s one of humanity’s best frontiers.

It is our future, our savior from death & disease, our greatest endeavor, the culmination of all our efforts, one of our greatest prides as a species.

But it should never come at the cost of our humanity.

Just as you can’t do medical research on non-consenting patients, since you can’t hurt anyone no matter how much it would advance our collective knowledge, we should forbid construction on places which are sacred to people.

Science should never be grounded in the blood of our brethren or in their sorrows.

Imagine having to base your work on data that was taken by trampling other people.

I personally would not want anything to do with that.

My claims against building on grounds sacred to some people are not scientific, since science is a method of finding out empirical truths*, and has absolutely nothing to do with morality\ethics.

My claims aren’t coming from a religious place either, I’m an agnostic atheist & my view of religion is mostly a combination of wariness & pity.

My claims come from a humanistic place.

We shouldn’t hurt people for scientific advancement.

Science will get there eventually, with or without this observatory.

Why insist on doing this? Why should our path forward be stained with tears?

Astrophysics means the world to me, and because of this, I refuse to let it be tainted by this sort of behavior.

There will always be another mountain. If studying in this exact spot prevents you from being a decent person, pick another spot.
