Sometimes being an artist is feeling like a baker seeing a chemist making the deadliest liquid in the world and wishing you could make the deadliest liquid as well but you're a baker, not a chemist, and then you feel like your bread is worthless
If it helps, as a writer with artist friends often feels like being a chemist surrounded by bakers. I'll spend ages coming up with a hypothesis and then lock myself away for weeks or months only to emerge with a small vial of glowing liquid. Yes it took a lot of work, and yes I'm proud that I've created it, but it pales when I look across at the bakers. In the same time, they've made so many delicious things that make living a delight. Chances are they've fed me and kept me from despair while I was locked in my lab. And I envy their wonderful craft.
This is just a reminder that not everybody experiences being aromantic and asexual the same. it's a spectrum for a reason.
Let's celebrate our differences and support each other whether we are sex-repulsed or sex-favourable.
Whether we are aromantic by definition or demi/greyromantic. (These are just a few examples)

sometimes i see a post that has inaccurate information about libraries and sometimes i contemplate correcting them but then i don’t
actually this is a specific post i’ve seen circulating on my dash for a few months. i’m not blaming anyone for reblogging it but i think a lot of people don’t know enough about what a library is
getting a card is great, don’t get me wrong. but not using it isn’t good. yes, we can run reports that say how many cards were made in a year and we report it to our board (which the mayor is part of and the mayor has a big say in our budget -- see the cuts to nyc library funding by eric adams). but it’s bad if no one is using the cards. we do track circulation (items that are checked in/out, are lost or go missing, etc.), and if no one is taking out items that looks bad for our acquisitions budget. is there a manga series you like that’s 1000 issues long and still ongoing? if our budget gets cut we might not buy new books in the series. if you don’t use the ebook services we provide (libby, overdrive, etc.) those go away. if you don’t come to programs, program budgets get cut. if you. don’t keep track of what’s going on in your library, things you do not want to happen might happen anyway. go to the library. get to know the librarians, because if something comes up they will tell you about it. they might tell you that they’re holding a board meeting because a book was challenged by another patron. go to that board meeting to object to the challenge. and if you can’t physically go, get it in writing. e-mail the director -- you can find their email on the library website or somewhere on the internet. public librarians work for the public -- our info is out there. the director will read the email at the board meeting.
being an active member of the library is so much more than getting a card. not every library is great at outreach (my library is working on it, but we’re a small town, too), so sometimes you need to go to the website or call the library and ask. we’re more than happy to help. we want people in the library. it’s how we justify our existence, especially now when the far right really hates us and thinks we’re all pedophile indoctrinating children and will do anything to defund us. bigots are loud -- you have to be louder.
we all agree that book bans are bad and libraries closing are bad. but you have the power to stop it. and yeah, budgets are sometimes cut because there’s nothing else the library can do, but showing you actually want the library and the resource it provides to be around is important. i cannot overstate how much your voice matters. it matters over the staff, honestly, and i have a literal degree in library science. so i’m using my grad school knowledge to tell you to actually use and advocate for your public library

Databases for research, music, movies (mine has whole ass streaming service I can checkout for a short time!), tools, toys, games, learning services, mobile hotspots, you never know what awesome services and materials your library has!

Right now, you have to be a team player. You cannot complain about AI being used to fuck over your industry and then turn around and use it on somebody else’s industry.
No AI book covers. No making funny little videos using deepfakes to make an actor say stuff they never did. No AI translation of your book. No AI audiobooks. No AI generated moodboards or fancasts or any of that shit. No feeding someone else’s unfinished work into Chat GPT “because you just want to know how it ends*” (what the fuck is wrong with you?). No playing around with AI generated 3D assets you can’t ascertain the origin of. None of it. And stop using AI filters on your selfies or ESPECIALLY using AI on somebody else’s photo or artwork.
We are at a crossroad and at a time of historically shitty conditions for working artists across ALL creative fields, and we gotta stick together. And you know what? Not only is standing up for other artists against exploitation and theft the morally correct thing to do, it’s also the professionally smartest thing to do, too. Because the corporations will fuck you over too, and then they do it’s your peers that will hold you up. And we have a long memory.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking “your peers” are only the people in your own industry. Writers can’t succeed without artists, editors, translators, etc making their books a reality. Illustrators depend on writers and editors for work. Video creators co-exist with voice actors and animators and people who do 3D rendering etc. If you piss off everyone else but the ones who do the exact same job you do, congratulations! You’ve just sunk your career.
Always remember: the artists who succeed in this career path, the ones who get hired or are sought after for commissions or collaboration, they aren’t the super talented “fuck you I got mine” types. They’re the one who show up to do the work and are easy to get along with.
And they especially are not scabs.

Okay so I did some research, very basic research, on the user base of tumblr and how many of us there are.
There are at least 300 million unique visitors worldwide on this site. Over 500 million blogs.
Listen. Tumblr is $30 million in debt. This is Super easy for us to solve.
If each user gifts one blog crabs, which costs slightly over $3, that would be roughly $600 million at least. Far more than enough to get Tumblr out of the red zone.
If we want tumblr to stay afloat and not change something as integral about their operating system, we need to show them they can be profitable without reducing themselves to common social media sites. What we have here is special. It is different. We are the social media site people run to when theirs collapses and for good reason.
If we want this to work, we have to make it work. We can even make it into a game. Just how long can we outlast the other social media sites?

It needs to be a holiday. Pick a date a few weeks from now, and just make it Crab Day. Maybe a Saturday as a lot of people are paid on Fridays. Just in case this post becomes more popular than any I've had before, lets set the date as the last Saturday in July (which for us in 2023 will be July 29th.)
On July 29th, gift as many crabs as you can without breaking the bank. Post crab memes if you cannot afford a crab.
