I keep trying to think of what a “safe” or “nontoxic” masculinity would look like and tbh I can’t picture it.

Anything that could possibly fit that criteria can’t have any ties or owe any loyalty to what we now call masculinity, or affinity to maleness. And as such it seems illegible as a masculinity from what we now understand masculinity to be, so carrying the name masculinity or manhood or maleness seems a contradiction in terms.

I mean, it’s a system of values, masculinity is. It declares certain things to be masculine and therefore good, and it assigns the antitheses of these qualities to other genders, and thereby codifies other genders as inferior, codifies people of other genders as inferior, and thus lends tacit permission to anyone identifying with maleness to exercise authority and unjustifiable power over them.

You just can’t turn subscribing to the culture of manhood into a politically neutral expression.
