Background: @randomfoggytiger made this awesome post about Mulder's response to trauma, and I barfed in their tags that the descriptions of Mulder and Scully's responses matched what I was writing in my current fic -- namely, that given an impossible situation, Mulder will freeze and dissociate (then fight) and Scully will go into hyperactivity mode.

The referenced story is part of my A Second Chance series (which is rewriting the show from Deadalive). Currently in the series, William has been born, and he has abilities that have attracted the attention of CSM.

Much like in the show, I wanted to answer the question: what do Mulder and Scully do if William in is danger? I actually agree with the show (kind of) that Scully's reaction to William being in danger is to give him away. This seems like the flight/hyperactivity response that @randomfoggytiger discusses for her. I think where the show failed was that the stakes weren't high enough for what she did.

The show should have pointed out is that Scully's chip in her neck prevents her from running too. And that the chip is why she didn't go with Mulder in the first place. The show also needed to explain why William couldn't hide with Mulder. I also think they needed to show Scully go into hyperactivity mode trying to fix/protect him, first, before making this sacrifice. Or at least have put a reason why it had to be now. But they didn't so here we are and the whole thing feels weak.

But I think, if Mulder had been around when she was faced with the choice, his freeze response would have slowed everything down. I don't think he would have agreed to giving William away. He would have chosen try to hide the three of them or to stand their ground and fight.

So, I think this leads to some resentment between Mulder and Scully over the loss of William. Mulder understands, intellectually, why she did it, but he clings to the things he loves. Whoever was after William would have had to rip him away from Mulder (literally). Scully, on the other hand, lets the things she loves go (see: stopping Emily's treatment). She'd rather be in pain alone than watch what she loves suffer.

Anyway, this is all to say, that I am nervous as I write the next two (unpublished) parts of this series, as it dives into this question. So I was excited that it generally followed this post, so at least one person in the world might agree with me. :)
