okay i’m migrating back to here, if anyone wants to follow that on the very teeny tiny slim af off-chance

Dan and I bought a thing called “long ziti” from the local Weird Bargain Store, largely as a joke, but…. I have never had a more unsettling pasta experience in my life. They wouldn’t bend enough to cook from top to bottom simultaneously, and while they were cooking boiling water kept spouting out from the tops of them out of the pot, like a boiling pipe organ. Then they were so long and floppy and hoselike that we couldn’t pick them up with anything other than tongs, and then they were so long and unwieldy that it was basically impossible to sauce them without them all slithering out of the bowl like wet snakes. They then proceeded to cool down almost completely within the the seconds it took to walk to the living room. Eating them was like eating a bowl full half melted drinking straws.

Bringing back Long Ziti for another round because it’s just too funny

Pro-writing tip: if your story doesn't need a number, don't put a fucking number in it.

Nothing, I mean nothing, activates reader pedantry like a number.

I have seen it a thousand times in writing workshops. People just can't resist nitpicking a number. For example, "This scifi story takes place 200 years in the future and they have faster than light travel because it's plot convenient," will immediately drag every armchair scientist out of the woodwork to say why there's no way that technology would exist in only 200 years.

Dates, ages, math, spans of time, I don't know what it is but the second a specific number shows up, your reader is thinking, and they're thinking critically but it's about whether that information is correct. They are now doing the math and have gone off drawing conclusions and getting distracted from your story or worse, putting it down entirely because umm, that sword could not have existed in that Medieval year, or this character couldn't be this old because it means they were an infant when this other story event happened that they're supposed to know about, or these two events now overlap in the timeline, or... etc etc etc.

Unless you are 1000% certain that a specific number is adding to your narrative, and you know rock-solid, backwards and forwards that the information attached to that number is correct and consistent throughout the entire story, do yourself a favor, and don't bring that evil down upon your head.

Editor here. Can confirm.

"Two centuries later" just triggers a mental note to check if timing is consistent throughout the book, because it may mean more time jumps are ahead. "200 years later", or heaven forbid, "201 years later" will have me draw up a time line. The more specific the number, the more critical people become.

Strange phenomenon. Well spotted, OP.

Things I wish I’d known.

Not a counterpoint, because OP has ABSOLUTLE Y correctly identified a reader beahavior (Of which I am very guilty. If a year is mentioned I go to the Wikipedia page to see what else was happening that year), but a thing to consider:

Putting numbers in, then lampshading the hell out of the resulting urge to do math and check dates. Some of my favorite Examples:

  • "This Item can really cause a Thousand Years of Darkness?" "Well, it actually only causes 968 years of Darkness, but that didn't sound as good."
  • "Wait, you're from the year 1596? OMG DID YOU KNOW SHAKESPEARE??" "Who?" "The, the famous English playwright?" "What the fuck is 'English'?" "Like the country? In Europe?" "I'm from China, I don't know any european celebrities."
  • "And Thus, King Garbelpantz rode forth with his army of 10,000 soldiers." "What? I didn't realize Pantzlandia was so big?" "Huh? No it was a small kingdom, opressed by it larger neighbors-" "But it takes approximately 1,000 people worth of support staff like farmers, weavers, merchants, blacksmiths and the like to support just one full-time warrior in medieval times. So Pantzlandia would have had to have a population in the neighborhood of 10 million for King Garbelpantz to have an army that large-" "OH MY GOD, STOP INTERRUPTING THE EXPOSITION STEVE-" "IT'S NOT WORTH IT IF ALL THE EXPOSITION IS BULLSHIT, MILEY."
  • "Wait, this text says the Pharaoh reigned 5,000 years ago, but this one says it was 3,000 years ago-" "-THERE WAS A LOT OF MAGICAL BULLSHIT HAPPENING, SPACE AND TIME LOST ALL MEANING AND WHEN IT WAS OVER I HAD TWO DIFFERENT CALENDARS, OKAY?" "...You LOST 2,000 years?" "Or Added them, I'm genuinely not sure."

So what is the problem with the overtaking? There was concern at the end of last season about the new regulations and the idea that the turbulent air from these higher downforce cars would make it hard for a car to follow another and pass. At the same time the extra downforce means braking distances are shorter. The idea with these rules was to make the cars much faster over a lap as the drivers complained that they were not a challenge to drive and 17 year old Max Verstappen was able to compete straight away, which older drivers found depressing.
