Mistakes You Should Avoid When Recording at Home

It has become a trend that most songwriters have realized the essence of having home recording studios. They have chosen to forego the process of booking for studio time whereby you need to do everything within the allocated time.  Besides, you still have to pay for your studio time even though you will use professional guidance and equipment. A home recording studio may not have all the luxuries, but that does not imply you can make something out of it. As long as you are able to avoid some of the common mistakes made by novice artists, you will definitely succeed in your recording project.

Avoid overusing sound effects

Most musicians have always made the mistake of over depending on sound effects.  Most listeners will not find your track interesting if you overuse the effects. For starters, using both effects for post recording and pre-amp will result to reduced clarity and quality of your recording. Studies have shown that most people misuse the Reverb effect since it helps in producing a more professional sound.  The wrong use of this effect leads to slurred or smeared sounds. It is not a must you use effects, try to keep your record clean and you’ll love the record.

Avoid Using Cheap Cables

As you know, cheap is expensive; in case you want to get the most out of your Home Studio, you should be ready to invest in high quality cables. In case you didn’t know, the cables you rely on to connect all your equipment have a big impact in terms of sound output. Cheap cables will always distort your tunes; you need to choose cables carefully and have them tested before purchasing them.

Do not rely on a Single Set of Speakers

Recording work requires you to have different sets of speakers to help you maintain quality. If you use one set of speaker for all your recording operations, you won’t achieve consistency. Testing the strength or weakness of your mix requires you to have different speakers, this includes; A Bluetooth Speaker, iPod headphones, car stereo or any other equipment for testing sounds.

Ignoring intonation

If you are a songwriter using String instruments in your home-based studio, you should consider tuning your strings so that you achieve a clean, accurate and warm track. Before you record your new track, make sure you purchase brand new strings and tune thing them accordingly. Another way to achieve intonation is by ensuring that your guitar’s neck is perfectly straightened out. These two methods will help you achieve the perfect intonation in your recordings.

It’s not every laptop that you can use to produce music. To be on the safe side do a through research when picking the best laptop for music production. Don’t get worried whether to choose windows laptop or apple laptop. Go with the one that you are comfortable and can afford.

 Turn off your machines

When recording, you should ensure that all your machines are turned off since the presence of background noise will distort your recording. In case your studio does not have a vocal booth, you have no option other than keeping your recording room quiet.
