I could literally put any number I want in my bio. It’s all the honor system. You have no way to prove or disprove whatever number I put there. Why does it matter if there is one? Absolutely nothing prevents me from lying.

Why is there an expectation on me to reveal information about myself publicly?

Why have we collectively decided that putting personal information out there is not only blanket fine but should be the standard?

We put so much blind trust in a number that it’s normal to forcibly disengage over a lack of one. It doesn’t mean shit. Don’t tell me half of y’all didn’t have 18 in your bio for 3 years before you turned 18. Whether you’d like to admit it or not, it’s really easy to lie on the internet. I did it for years, and not one person ever questioned it.

Why then, do we put so much stock in the idea that nobody is lying?

The only goal that taking a hardline stance on this accomplishes is making you feel better about yourself, regardless of if you’re even actually accomplishing anything.

If you’re truly that worried about it, my 100% serious suggestion is to delete your account and pick a different platform, lol. Tumblr doesn’t provide the experience you’re looking for.

You don’t have to pretend it some kind of moral imperative.

I have infinitely more respect for people who can just say it makes them feel better about themselves. That’s fine. There’s nothing wrong about that.

But don’t go fuckin tooting your own horn about how much better you are for it. There is no such thing as “making a space that is hostile to minors” when you’re on the public-facing internet. Which this is. I am right now. If you’re reading this, congratulations, you’re on the public internet. You, that’s right, you reading this right now, about to block me for being right, you are categorically a public performer when you post on this website. That is in fact how the public internet works. When you post things that I can search on google DuckDuckGo and view without even logging in to website, you are putting on a public performance and have zero control over who can see it and interact with it.

So if you truly believe that combing through every note of every post for anybody who doesn’t have an age listed in their bio is doing anything other than making you feel better about yourself, delete your account. You’re on the wrong platform.

like you realize that people can be raised into harmful ideologies and not question them until later in life and that it takes introspection and active efforts to understand your harmful actions and make change to your behavior right
