@mixedwomanist

this is mostly my anger
Owned and operated by Tomasina Boone, Afro Puffs is an Australian based shop that curates premium products for natural, curly hair.

So the link here doesn’t work for me, are all of these products produced by Afro Puffs? I’ve seen a few of these at a local supermarket and thought about checking them out.

They aren’t produced by them but they are curated and distributed by Afro Puffs as the brands and options available for natural, curly/coily haired people in Australia is quite limited! I’m trying to embrace my natural curls once again after years of damage and found this video and this video really helpful to start off with, even the smallest changes (like switching from a cotton to silk pillow case) can really help your hair out.

Hopefully this link to Afro Puffs will work for you!

Just a psa: I've heard of people having reactions to eco styler due to the chemicals but I've never used it myself so I can never be sure but I advise y'all to beware. Cantu used to be great until they reformulated and started putting isopropryl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in their products especially in their leave-in conditioners. I used to swear by Cantu until I noticed by hair feeling dry and stiff and noticed a difference in the ingredients from their old formula to their newer ones and actually saw a video on YouTube confirming my suspicions. Also mixed chicks is very expensive and the product is sub-par. I am mixed race and have type 3 hair (exactly the demographic mixed chicks is made for) so I'd imagine anyone with a tighter curl pattern would be more disappointed in the product especially for the price.

me: hi, how are you today?

some SuitPerson: haha well you know - thank God it’s FRIDAY amiright!!!!!!

me, who works the next three days and has entirely lost the concept of weekends as a time for rest and relaxation:

My favorite thing is when people say “Thank goodness it’s the weekend!” or “At least it’s Saturday!” while I am ringing them up for their purchases on a Saturday.

Or the people that come shopping on holidays and say "too bad you have to work today."

“i transmit astral plane harmonies through my brushes into the physical plane. these otherworld colours are reflected in the alphabet of nature, a grammar in which the symbols are plants, animals, birds, fishes, earth and sky. i am merely a channel for the spirit to utilize, and it is needed by a spirit starved society.” - norval morrisseau born in 1931 on sandpoint reserve in northern ontario, norval morrisseau, known also by the spirit name copper thunderbird (or miskwaabik animikii), was raised by his shaman grandfather, potan, who passed down to him the ojibwe oral history and culture. self taught, morrisseau came to develop his own artistic style, known as anishnabe or medicine painting, as an expression of this ojibwe oral history and mythology. as he once said, “all my painting and drawing is really a continuation of the shaman’s scrolls.” incorporating sacred ojibwe imagry, he saw his work as ‘colour therapy’ in a world of increasing darkness.

(side note: armand garnet ruffo, himself a member of the sagamok ojibway and chapleau cree fox lake first nations  - and queen’s english prof - has a new autobiography out, “norval morrisseau: man changing into thunderbird.” and it bears noting that the last photo was taken at the national art gallery in ottawa in 2006, where morrisseau was the first aboriginal artist to have a solo exhibition in the gallery’s 126 year history.)

Trump Moves Forward With Plan to Separate Immigrant Families

What’s Happening This Week?

This week the Trump administration is moving forward with a “deterrence policy” that plans to house immigrant children on military bases, intentionally separating them from their families. This plan is explicitly to split families apart to discourage migrants from crossing the border. Here’s what’s going on…

A email notification at the Pentagon shows that the Department of Health and Human Services is going to be visiting several military bases to see if they’re able to be used as child shelters. This will be for minors (under 18) who arrived at the border without an adult and for the children who are forcibly separated from their families.

Why Is This Happening?

The harsh move is a response from the administration who recently saw the highest number of border crossings since taking office. In March and April there was an increase in immigrants seeking asylum, mainly from Central America, and Trump had demanded action from HSS to “close” the borders and decrease the “flow” of migration. (Note that seeking asylum is 100% legal and many of those Trump is trying to stop from coming in are facing the dangers of political corruption, state violence, persecution, anti-LGBTQ violence, etc.)

“If you don’t want your child separated, then don’t bring them across the border illegally. It’s not our fault that somebody does that.” - Jeff Sessions on separating immigrant families.

What’s Being Said vs. What’s Happening

Officials have repeatedly declined to provide data on how many families have been separated, but suggested that the number was relatively low.
But new data reviewed by The New York Times shows that more than 700 children have been taken from adults claiming to be their parents since October, including more than 100 children under the age of 4.

However this is what HHS officials are saying:

Homeland security officials said the agency does not separate families at the border for deterrence purposes. “As required by law, D.H.S. must protect the best interests of minor children crossing our borders, and occasionally this results in separating children from an adult they are traveling with if we cannot ascertain the parental relationship, or if we think the child is otherwise in danger,” a spokesman for the agency said in a statement.

The “deterrence policy” has been a plan of Trump’s (through former HHS secretary John F. Kelly) for a while now. The plan that was considered before also included closing detention facilities designed to house families, it would turn these facilities into shelters that separately house adults and children.

uhhhh

so there was a fucking eruption yall

about 20 minutes ago a huge spout broke out on the road

@ anyone living in leilani estates in pahoa hawaii please be safe and get outta there

edit: there is now an aerial shot and holy shit its way bigger that i thought

Seriously guys, this is one natural event you should NOT get out and document. The fumes can seriously damage your lungs or kill you if it’s too concentrated.

PLEASE evacuate if possible.

If you haven’t seen the news articles or channels yet, the Big Island’s volcano Kilauea erupted and is now causing earthquakes and fissures in the southern side of the island.

For more information, google is your friend, but also here is how to donate to the Red Cross and if you live on the other side of the island or in any way get the opportunity in the area to donate to the shelters currently housing the evacuees, they need pillows and towels the most and cannot accept clothing items or non-canned/shelf stable foods.

AND if you see those cracks in the ground/streets or any fissures, even if they aren’t spitting lava, DON’T TOUCH THEM OR GO NEAR THEM IF POSSIBLE. There’s plenty of filming of the event by helicopters, but this isn’t like a hurricane or tornado where you either have no choice but to sit tight and have the chance to film or can film safely knowing you won’t get hit. Just evacuate and keep safe!

yall this is very recent - as in the red cross link is dated may 6th. dont ignore this.

The Stanford prison experiment tapes were so stupid when I watched them in AP psych and so stupid when I watch this film about them. Literally they could’ve all sat and played cards and got $15 a day to tell ghost stories all day and be best friends. But masculinity and whiteness and power created this violent irrationality that positioned young ass men to be met with brutality and trauma and disrespect even when it was obviously taken too far. and it makes no sense. If someone put me in a room with Black girls and said I would get paid $90 a day (that’s the equivalent apparently) to be a prison guard, do you know how fast I’d be sitting with them and learning about them and exchanging Instagrams and like.. sleeping.. like what the fuck was the point of any of that…

My psych teacher introduced us to this study and literally before she showed us was like “don’t ever confuse a study based on one type of person (white men/boys) to be an example of an Everyman situation. There is strong evidence that if this was recreated with diversity, or even just with girls, that the results would have been drastically different. This is an example of bias and sexism in the medical research community.”

“Other, more subtle factors also shaped the experiment. It’s often said that the study participants were ordinary guys—and they were, indeed, determined to be “normal” and healthy by a battery of tests. But they were also a self-selected group who responded to a newspaper advertisement seeking volunteers for “a psychological study of prison life.” In a 2007 study, the psychologists Thomas Carnahan and Sam McFarland asked whether that wording itself may have stacked the odds. They recreated the original ad, and then ran a separate ad omitting the phrase “prison life.” They found that the people who responded to the two ads scored differently on a set of psychological tests. Those who thought that they would be participating in a prison study had significantly higher levels of aggressiveness, authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and social dominance, and they scored lower on measures of empathy and altruism.” http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/the-real-lesson-of-the-stanford-prison-experiment

The thing about this study is that whether or not it’s generalizable to the public is debatable at best.

But it’s certainly generalizable to the population of people who tend to be drawn to prison system and law enforcement jobs because that’s exactly the demographics that tend to show up in those positions.
