If you really wanna spend thousands of dollars go to fucking Northern Europe and do that. Reminder that in 2017 4chan played capture the flag with Shia LaBeouf. Without any kind of a retail store to use for landmarks they got a rough estimate of the flags location from a livestream. They used the position of the sun to narrow it down to a specific time zone, they tracked the flight paths of planes seen flying overhead to further narrow it down. Then someone in the area drove around honking his horn while viewers on the livestream told him if he was getting closer until he found and stole the flag.

One time someone asked if my parents didn't give me enough attention as a kid, and I kind of just paused for a sec, then said "well mom slept at the office and dad didn't want me so probably not, actually?" And it turns out they just thought I talked a lot

I've inadvertently done this because I'm autistic and have been through enough trauma therapy that I can just talk about that stuff without getting upset now, so sometimes people say something jokingly and I give a perfectly honest answer. And I only notice when they go silent and stare at me like I've grown a second head, but even funnier is when they start apologizing. Because then you know they were making a joke at your expense. And they won't be doing it again.

There was a salesman/account rep that everyone in my mom's building disliked. He was apparently somewhere between "asshole frat boy" and "scummy used car salesman," but he knew just where the line was and apparently enjoyed putting his toes on it, but never over.

They were stuck with him, basically.

One day, mom was sitting in the samples room, looking through some data with a couple of other people working at nearby stations, and this guy comes in, sees my mom, and decides he's going to have some fun.

"Hey, nice hat!" he says. "Having a bad hair day? Dye job go bad?"

My mother sets down her work, and reaches up, taking off her hat. "No. Chemotherapy. "

Now confronted with her bald head, he freezes, his life flashing before his eyes.

"For stage 4 breast cancer," my mother says, never changing expression.

He is now actively praying for death, as every other person in the room has stopped their work, and are staring at him.

"The prognosis is six to eight months," mom says. She doesn't say 'until I die,' but it hangs there. She picks up her work. "So I really should get back to this."

Apparently he was mass reported to his employer before he got out of the building by multiple lab heads. They never saw him again.

say it with me: people with mental illness are not dangerous or scary! theyre people just like everyone else!

K I have real mixed emotions about this.

First, I’m crazy af and work hard to get healthier. Most of my diagnoses are from trauma- I saw my first murder before I was 9, my mother was highly abusive, etc. I got fucked up because fucked up things happened to me. I’m all about mental health awareness and positivity.

Flip side- some mental health conditions are scary to others because they ARE dangerous. A person in a psychotic break can hurt and kill people without meaning to/understanding what they are doing. People can have violent meltdowns.

Some mental health disorders make people lack empathy, or prune them to be emotionally abusive and manipulative and if they don’t work on their shit, they can be incredibly harmful to anyone around them who cares about them (cluster B personality disorders are a big part of why my mother was so abusive and my childhood was such a nightmare).

Acting like all mental health issues deserve endless compassion stigmatizes the very real need to help people escape abusers who all have a sob story (to keep their victims close and get flying monkey defenders when someone legitimately wants to get the fuck away from them).

I think it’s a lot healthier for everyone to say “Have some compassion for people struggling with mental health issues, but it’s OK to be done with them and walk away to protect yourself. Also, my fellow crazy people, it’s legit for you to have to face the consequences of your behavior when you went dysregulated and if you’re being abandoned, see about adjusting your meds and working harder in therapy. This is the consequences of your behavior and while it sucks, it’s right so let’s work on coping mechanisms and how you treat people.”

I’ve had enough people tell me I should forgive my mom because she can’t help it that I now have an auto response- if she can’t help it I am absolutely right to maintain no contact because I don’t deserve to be a literal and figurative punching bag for someone who refuses to work on their issues. Her not being able to help it does not mean I have to sit here and take it.

A lot of mental health awareness seems to veer dangerously into abuse apologetics and enabling, and that makes me very wary and skittish. Abusers are aware of this rhetoric and use it to DARVO their victims. I know my mother says my no contact is abusive to her because I took away her favorite punching bag. That she did nothing so bad as to deserve this kind of abandonment and I’m a horrible person for not supporting her but… I’m not a horrible person and if any romantic partner treated me the way my Mom treated me they’d be in prison.

Blanket statements about mental health issues can be dangerous because there’s a great need for nuance.

One of the reasons I divorced my ex who I still love is they refused any treatment for their bipolar and they managed their depressive episodes by starting fights and ripping me apart verbally. As they got older and the bipolar got worse, it happened more and more until I couldn’t take it anymore, loving them hurt too much.

Telling people with disregulated thinking that they should be supported no matter what because of their illness makes it easier for them to internalize they should be endlessly forgiven for their behavior and that’s just not the case.

It leads to a lot more suffering on everyone’s part.

the thing about the whole 'queer is a slur' thing is ... is it only a thing on tumblr/twitter? because none of the gay, queer, lesbian, trans etc people i know from real life, who are actively engaged in LGBTQ communities in the various cities where they live have heard about it all. so i kind of wonder if it is a byproduct of online culture, a place with a well documented history of peoples' opinions accelerating to the most polarizing degree possible and saying insulting/extreme things just because they can be more anonymous... but in real life when you have to be face to face with people, they just don't have the nerve. it's like ... something that comes from people stewing in isolation finding themselve in digital echo chambers and just hollering nonsense and filth. but if you met up with an in-the-flesh person, it would never get to that. "touching grass" is really really important actually?

people i know irl all have a variable variety of the relationships to the word queer. the problem i have is not just terfy posts about the "q slur" but also the defensive posts saying queer is great and the perfect word that describes everyone forever and you're a problem if you're not ok with it. i have a friend who is a non binary lesbian who loves calling themselves queer. i have a friend who says she balks at this idea that queer is finally a safe label you call everyone by, like the ideal we're all reaching for is accurate categorization, to be fixed in language, like sexuality is empirical. which i HEAVILY relate to. she does not want to be called queer. i used to call myself queer, but then i knew someone who used the label queer to justify/brush off other people accusing them of sexual harassment, and ever since i've felt viscerally repulsed by the word and wanted to keep a healthy distance from it. there are all sorts of reasons why one might dislike or like the word queer that are valid, and it feels like off the internet we can recognize and understand for the most part. but online discussions seems to turn into this totalizing polarizing mess where extreme ideas on either side get developed that it seems like no one would have the nerve to admit to face to face. I guess this applies to not just LGBTQ but so many aspects of societies these days.

but maybe "queer" discourse exists in other places i don't have friends in. i think having queer communities based on in-person and not only boxes on a screen does some important grounding. of course it IS still so hard to find and maintain.
